CITY OFFIOXBS.-Thoae who are supposed to
have influence m grinding candidates through
the Council mill are, we learn, besieged by
countless petitions, and the number of times
per day they are asked by disinterested per?
sons , to "take something," ia almost beyond
calculation. Aldermen until now neither knew
hon important they were andar?, nor tbe capa?
city of their stomachs.

ST. JOHN'S DAT-MASONIC CELEBRATIONS
?KLIOIOUS OBSERVANCE.-This is St. John's
tr Midsummer's Day,' and has been and is one
>r the most popular bf religious festivals. The
lay has inherited a number ot obeervances
rom heathen times, which .are now curiously
nixed with those springing from Christian
eelings, so much so, that it is not easy to dis
inguisb them. The observances connected
nth the nativity of the Saint generally oom
uenoe on the previous evening; especially
ras this time celebrated by the Masonic
dodges of Scotland.
In this country the day'is always celebrated
>y the.. Masons. This year the Masons of
marleston and Mount Pleasant aili celebrate
t in an unusually grand manner..,,.The various
leiegationB, lodges and chapters will assem
ile at Market wharf, at quarter-past 8 o'clock
i. M., where an extra boat of the ferry line
rill convey them to Mount Pleasant. Here
hey will be welcomed by a speech from Broth
r Yenning, of the Etiwan Lodge, which will
>e responded to by Grand Master James Con
ter, after whioh the procession will be formed
tnder Brother P. E. Coburn, Grand Marshal,

After the oration, the Etiwan Lodge will on?

The LaCandesr Lodge, No. 86, and Walbal

Ifteen minutes during the day.
St. John being the patron saint of this dio
ieee, there will be service at the St. John's
Cathedral Chapel at the usual hours.
THE Ornons - GRAND-STREET DISTLA?-The
ong looked for oircus arrived yesterday, bring
ng any number of equestrian, gymnaetio, ath
etio and acrobatic artists, Ecological and
irnithologioal specimens, perhaps the greatest
lumber ever ^onsohdated in one instructive
amusement combination.
The tent was pitched in Citadel Oreoo, early
n the morning-the workmen being surround
id by an intensely interested crowd of future
aldermen, and others, perhaps, destined to
illino in the legislative halls, for whioh they
ire now preparing themselves, by shining
.boots for half a dime," or more.
About ton o'olook, the grand street procos
lion commenced to move along the principal
itreete. In the line were gorgeously apparel?
ed ladies and gentlemen,a herd of gaily capar
soned horses and elfin ponies, trained
ilephants and camels, dens and cages of
vild beaste.foraaing hardly a scene of "Orien
al grandeur and thrilling interest," as the
advertisement said, (by the way, if there were
inough ciro uses? ia the world* the writer of
he advertisements, Ac., for Colonel Amos',
iould make a fortune by doing such work for
hem,) but a rare and very interesting specta?
cle, probably the largest end grandest ever
vitnessedin Oharlsston.
We were untbie, from press ol easiness, to
tttend tho performances yesterday, and were
faerefore compelled to write an account of
hem from the opinions of those who attended,
t large ?amber of whom we consulted. They
vere enthusiastic on the subject-"Best thing
[ ever ssw," said one; "Good performance,"
?aid another; "Am going to attend every exhi
liUon, tod when it leaves I intend to follow it
til around," said another. With those sui fake
int?rnente, we are compelled to say that Col

TUB STATE TAXES.-The Clarendon Frees
learns that many persons in different parts of
the State hare determined not to pay tho State
tax, and that it is to be mad o a question in the
courts, and to be carried, if necessary, to the
Supreme Court of the United States, on tbe
ground that it is illegal imposition, even ac?
cording to the present constitution and laws
of Booth Carolina, as framed, passed and
adopted by tbe Radicals themselves.

QUEER DOINGS.-T h o Columbus Enquirer
lays that upon a shipment of one hundred and
ninety-throe bales of cotton from that city to
Savannah, t here was a loss in weight of 12.891
.sounds, which, at thirty cents per pound,
amounted to a loss to the Columbo* shipper of
F3 814 20. The ?Savannah News says: "It is
?rory evident that such a discrepancy could
>niy result from one of thies canses-over
veights in Columbus, plunder of the cotton
vbile in transita, or short weights in Savan?
ah. Twelve thousand eight hundred pounds
l?fferenco in the Co unibus and Savannah
weights is too much to allow for shrinkage. So
argo a margin of un curtain ty in the transaction
)f business is very unsatisfactory, and whon it
somos to be established that cotton loaos from
en to twenty per cent, in weight in tr?nsporta
ion from Columbus to Savannah, it is reason
>le to suppose that shippers from the interior
viii endeavor to dud some other outport.' '
