RELEASE OF J. HOLLIS BITERS FBOM CUS?
TODY.-This gentleman who, on the 18th of
April, 1868. ws8 arrested without affidavit or
warrant by the military authorities apon the
ohuge of murdering Captain George U. Hey?
ward, on the lat of Maroh, 1867, and incarcera?
ted for four months in Castle Pinckney with?
out being allowed the privilege of consulting
his friends or of employing counsel, has been
released by Judge William Bonley, of the Supe*
rior Court of Chatham County, Georgia.
After remaining in Castle Piockney the time
stated, he was allowed to enter into bonds
with security for bis appearance at the next
term of the Court of General Sessions at Beau?
fort. He appeared at that term of said court,
and although the grand jury declined to find a
true bill against bim, as was the cass at Ibo
next term of the court, the judge refused to
discbarge him from hi) recognizance.
Rivers then engaged in the business of raft?

third day of May last, the Governor of South
Carolina issued his proclamation offering a re?
ward of one th lusa nd dollars for the arrest ot
the murderer or murderers of Captain Hey?

eighteenth of May last, Rivers was arrested on
the Savannah Biver, about four miles below the
city, and committed ts the county jail to await
a requisition from the Governor of the State of
South Carolina, where be remained until Sat?

before Judge Scaley, upon a writ of habeas
corpus. The Jodes ordered that he should be
released from caa tody and set at liberty, and
that the coats incurred by his arrest and de?

ATTEMPTED Brjairaro OF A DWELLTKO-FTVE
Passons B?KST, OKS FATALLY-About two
o'clock yesterday morning, Mrs. E. E. Calder,
residing with her rather, Mr. E. C. Prince, at
Mo. 1 Ann, near Elisabeth-street, was aroused
by a light in her chamber, in which she, with
her two children, one an infant four months
old, slept. She immediately jumped up and
discovered that the bed was on fire, burning
from the bottom. She gave the alarm, and
her father and brother, Mr. J. E. Prince, came
to her assistance. They rescued the children
from the flames, which, with some difficulty
and after two beds were burnt, were extin?
guished.
Mrs. Calder, her brother and father, were
burnt shoat the hands and arms while reeou
ing the children, both of whom were severely
biruk One of them, Edwin Charles, about
three years of age, lingered in excruciating
agony until seven o'clock yesterday afternoon,
wheo death put an end to his sufferings. At a
late hoar last night no hopes of the recovery
of the babe were entertained. The injuries
sustained by the others were of a comparative?
ly trifling character, and they are now doing
well.
After the flames were extinguished, and the
obildren attended to, an examination of the
room was made. A kerosene oil lamp, which
Mr. Prince asserts, positively, at twelve o'clock
when he retired, blew oat sud placd apon the
mantelpiece, was found under the bed. It
was out, having, of c urae, been extinguished
with the beds and bedding. Tba lamp was
tonohing the washboard ot the house, which
was partially burnt.
The family have no suspicion of who the in?
cendiary was, or what motive prompted him to
this fiendish deed. The fiend must have gotten
into the house in tbe early part of the night,
when all of the family were in the back portion,
and concealed himself. How he got out is yet
a mystery, as there is no trace to show where
he made his egress. Chief Eogineer Nathans
will give the matter a thorough investigation,
and will do all that can be done to bring the
perpetrator to justice.
The shop next door to Mr. Prince's residence,
kept by Mr. H. Wohlkin, has, within the last
year, been set on fire three times, but the
flames wore extinguished oefore any damage
was done.
Mr. Prince and family request us to retain
their grateful thanks to the neighbors for their
prompt and valuablo assistance in their hear
of calamity and distress.
Nsw YOES FASHIONS.-A New York letter
gives us the following Fashion hints :
"Dotted dresses are fashionable, bat thc dots
mast be quite fine and in black or stone color
on a white ground, and the trimming is many
narrow folds of dark silk with a wide space
between, and one small bow without ends.
"Cambric wrappers of the flue thread cross
bars, now fancied in lilac, sea green and bright
colors, are sold ready-made for nix dollars at
one of tbs large houses here. They are
loose, gored shape, flounced, with ruffle up the
front seams and over the shoulder ; the mate?
rial at retail is forty cents a yard, and the work
well done.
"Dresses of white, striped with black in flue
Does an inch apart, and trimmed with the
same, are much worn for a ehange, over black
petticoats, with a single deep flounce. A light
yet striking toilet for one so cheap is of blaok
and white solid stripes, in thin worsted mate?
rial, worth fifty cents a yard. The gored un?
derskirt is trimmed with two puffs of black
silk, the lower one three inches from the
edge.
"Speaking of linon suits, the newest are
trimmed with two graduated quilled flounces
bound in brown, with two quill id ruches of the
same, three inches wide abovo the flounces,
with rather a wide interval. The basque is
square in the neck, wub quillings, the sleeve
wide with quilling at the wr.at, the sash of
brown silk or linen simply bouud with braid.
The gray linen is worn almost aa much as buff,
and is preferred because it is purer material.
Linen suits ready made ore ten dollars to six?
teen dollars.
"Bough straw hats are the latest fancy for
young ladies, and nothing sets off a simple
t toilet with an air like one of them, with wide
band and long floating ends of black ribbon,
with Bo nan bar at the ond. To be fashionable
one must not look for a refined rough straw, an
English, Milan or pedal braid, bot choose a gen?
uine smooth coarse braid, with none of the cor?
ners split in weaving, which give a prickly ef?
fect; bind the brim with black ribbon, fold the
same for a band, cross and pin it behind, leav?
ing ends three-quarters of a yard long. The
Roman bar is imitated by se/ing a fold of gay
striped satin ribbon across the end of the
stream ese. Hats for blondes are bound and
' trimmed in bright blue, without the scarlet
bar, bat bises is best, for it suits any dress
that can be worn with it. These bats are es?
pecially suitable to wear with linea or pique
suits. They are rather expensive pieoeeof
simplicity, for one trimmed by a French hand
costs from ten te fourteen dollars."
I SHOULD BS PROPERLY Joan AT Osrcx-Mot
long a?Doe the brick pavement at the corner of
Masel and Meeting streeta waa removed and
'replaced bj aa aaphaltom pavement. Thia
'. proved a failure, and eff orts to keep it in order
have been frc quest and unsuccessful. Some
i time ago tar waa plaoed there and a somber of
persons got a tuck upon it. Yesterday gravel
was pnt down. It is hoped that this will be a
satisfactory experiment; but some think not.
The pavement should be properly naei, and at
