STEAMSHIP ASHORE HEAB WILMINGTON, N- C
The Wilmington, N. C., Journal of Sunday
the 20th instant, mya:
The B'. earn ship Mary Sanford, which wen
ashore on the rip at the western bar, Bevera
days since, has now become quite critical
Friday abe waa compelled to throw overboan
a small portion of her cargo, and was subse
?iently relieved of 200 b?rrela of rosin by th
oop Plash, of Smithville. Yesterday morning
a Isak waa sprang, and the tug Alexander Old
ham coming to her relief, 160 barrels more o
her cargo was taken off and brought to thit
city. The vessel ia now in a critical condition
She lays grounded on the rip about midship
and is leaking quite badly. The Oldham cami
np to the city yesterday afternoon for a etean
pump, which waa taken down to the San tort
Jan night; The steamer Governor Worth wai
also aset to har assistance yesterday afternoon
and carried down Mr. D. G. Worth, the ageni
of tba lida. Everything will ba done tor tb<
rater of tte Sanford, and an ol the oirgo re
m arning will doubtless be saved. It is hopee
also to get the vessel off.
The Mary Sanford has been employed oa
tba route between Wilmington, N. C., and
New York. j
ACQUITTAL or LIQ rsx HOBS.-The trial ol
Richardson and Gray, msoibca of the Legis?
lature, (both neera**) dur tho murder of Dallai
8aait h, in Columbia, has boca ooneladed, and
their prompt acquittal by a jury of twelve ne?
groes been declared, The facta of this mur?
der has been sifted on two occasions, the first
of which'at last tenn of court proving a mis?
trial. The Ph oa oix remarks :
Whether Richardson waa guilty or not, we
bold that tba negro jory who decided the
issue waa utterly and thoroughly unfit to pro?
nounce in judgment. We do not touch the
conduct of the case, the management of tho
attorneys or the charge of the judge; we sim?
ply assert and maintain that in such a grave
and solemn issue, involving intricate details of
law and evidence, calling forth the most deli?
cate exercise of nice and accurate judgment,
with the Bign posts of the previous trial before
them, that the provision of ? negro Jury to
retry this ease pointed clearly to the nature of
tho verdict. In any event, the empanelling
of euoh a Jury was disastrous to the cause of
justice and the truthful investigation of a
great crime. The appointment of this jory
might have been legal-i. e., might have been
in accordance with some supposed law recently
enacted by some supposed authority in South
Carolina. But a law that leads to each re?
sults ia simply a monstrosity.
