the ranks of your body. Had you been divid?
ed into two partita, the people would have
readily understood your relationships. Had
there been Democrats composing; the Council,
men could have solved this mystery. But
when it is remembered that the contending
parties are all Republicans-when it is remem?
bered that you were engaged in contending
for six months to reach the place where you
are now doing so much mischief, both to the
party and to every citizen, it reflects the great?
est dishonor on you. Men are now beginning
to believe that yon have falsified your profes?
sions and betrayed the trust reposed in
?ou. Men, by hundreds, who former
r would have trusted you with their
all, will now direct their blow? againat
you, as if you were a cursed serpent. The
persistency with which you have kept up this
war after plunder, has entitled you to the Dame
of the "Bump." Men now walk the streets in
dread silence, with one hand on their purses
and the oUier on pistols. Your examples, in the
Council Chamber, has emboldened the mid?
night pad and the citizens to go armed with
impunity-having the liviug examples of their
city "stepfathers." Iou should at once resign,
and let tho people chose those who will adhere
to principles of equal justice. By your action,

the poor; already the grim monster death has
entered the door of many who nave been de?

non-action for the general welfare. If, there
fore, you would reserve the remaind .T of re?

linquish this unprofitable work of quarrelling,
and lettre to Cut)J, or Texas, or Central Amer?
ica, or to Hades-anywhere so this city is at
rest. "Lotus have peace."
Another Radical view of the matter is con ?
tained in the following paragraph:
The only possible line of arrangement is now
clearly indicated. The Mayor declares him?
self ready to make any sacrifice of personal
feeling, and to give assurance of a fair distri?
bution of patronage among his friends and his
opponents alike, within the lines of the Repub?
lican party. Further than this be says that
his own self respect and the deference doe the
feelings of those who have stood by him will
not permit him to go. And, preliminary to
any mutual arrangement, he insists on the
withdrawal of all obnoxious legislation. Tbe
Mayor is thoroughly convinced fha'., he is
right. He has taken his position deliberately
and will hold it. There is no basis ot settle?
ment but this for this summer.
This being the fact, the Council will proceed
to business whet* a diatribas ion of the patron?
age is agreed upon on this basis, or wheo
time brings to the Mayor a working majority.
These are the simple alternatives. We believe
that a mutual arrangement will be off J cte d in
a few days. If not there is a more distant al?
ternative in an appeal to the courts or to the
Legislature. Buk no special session will be
convened for the purpose. So that this remedy
is far away. . _

This afternoon, at 1 o'clock, a wedding of pe?
culiar interest was celebrated at Calvary
Church. The parties united were Miss Clem?
ent Willett, grand-daughter of Colonel Willett,
noted as the defender of Fort 8tanwix during
the Revolutionary war, and Dr. Lewis C. Ha?
se ll, of Charleston, 8. C., a member of one of
the first families in the rahnetto State. Rev.
Dr. Morgan officiated. The organist. Mr. Mo?
senthal, played selections from Beethoven,
Wehli, and the lan nh anser Marobee while
the audience were waiting, and the Wedding
March as the bridal pair were leaving, the
ohm ch. The bride was elaborately dressed in
satin, trimmed with point lace, with a beauti?
ful veil, wreath and bouquet. At the conclu?
sion of the ceremony a reception waa held at
the bride's residence in Grameroy Park, which
was largely attended. Among other persona
present, were James W. Gerard, Esq., the
well known lawyer and philanthropist. Miss
Ha wy ard, Miss Annie Ward. Mr. and Mrs.

The Governor baa pardoned Thomas Gra?
ham, who was sentenced to be bung on tbo
30th of April last, but was respited for the
purposs of procuring important testimony,
not adduced at the trial.
Charles D. Gehrals was convicted at the
Orangebarg Court of assault and battery, with
intent to kill, and fined $500. The Governor
bas remitted the penalty, on the ground ot
violent provocation in the most infamous abuse
of the defendant and his family.

terfere in the case of Cyrus Coachman, con?
victed of the murder of Robert P. Suggs, near
Florence, on the 10th of January last. Ho will
therefore be executed ou Fnday, the 18th
instant.

Colonel John Cuningham has opened a law
office ia Laurens ville.
The committee who have undertaken to ar?

to be contributed by the citizens to the theatre
project, will probably commence their collec?
tion tour to-day. We sincerely hope they may
meet with aband int success. We must have a
theatre, and this is our best chance.
The velocipede race on the plank road, in
Elizabeth-street, on Saturday afternoon, was
highly exciting and fall of humor. Mr. Chap?n
was the winner of the "soda water and oakes."
There was river 'immersion by the Rev. J.
Legare, at the foot of Tradd-street, yesterday.
Eleven males and thirty-five females, all color?
ed, were baptised.
A child accidentally fell into the pond at the
foot of Broad-street, on Friday last, and was
resoaed from drowning by a passer by.
There is a-great scarcity (says an observing
gentleman) of ants this season and a super?
abundance of flies. What does this mean ?
Tbe prospect of a meeting of Council is now
less favorable than a few diys ago.
Deer are very numer?os now in the suburbs.
Several fine runs have been made lately.
There, bas been no little shaking of official
bones in the past few days in anticipation of
the garrote which report says Council will
soon apply.
The commencement exercises of the Baker
Theological Institute, colored, takes place at
the Centenary M. E. Church this evening at
eight o'clock. *

race which is proposed for the 28th instant.
