_Mrs. George Vernon, a well known actress
Of New York, died at her residence in that city
on Friday evening, at tho age of seventy-seven
years. Sha waa English by birt h, and came to
this oountry when very young. She waa well
known as "old woman" at Wallack's.
-There are said to be 50,000 "commercial
travellers" in the United States, divided as fol?
lows : Belonging to Boston and tho New Eng?
land States. 10,000; New York, 20,000; Chicago,
Cincinnati and St. Louis, 10,000; Pennsylvania
and Maryland, including Philadelphia, Pitts
burg and Baltimore, 10,000.
-Almost immediately after the silver-bound
tie was laid and tbe golden spike driven in the
racine Railroad, they were quietly taken up
again, deposited with Nevada'a silver hammer
m a,car and sent to San Francisco, while a
common wooden tie was substituted, and
the "last rail" secured to it by a oommon iron
spike.
-The New York San of Wednesday says:
.'Yesterday the supply of strawberries was the
largeat ever known in this city. The rain
cheeked the Bale of them, and the market was
perfectly glutted. Prices touched ten cents a
quart for good quahties. In the afternoon the
oommon average sold as low as six cents.
Whole cargoes of Norfolk berries were thrown
into the river."
-General Quincy A. Gillmote has been
ordered to Savannah to superintend repairs
upon Fort Pulaski, which seven years ago he
did his beat to bitter down. Tho Savannah
Newe thinks it will be useless to repair the fort

Mosenthal, performing selections from Beetho?
ven. The bride was elaborately dressed in.
satin, trimmed with point lace. The Bev. Dr.
Morgan officiated."
-Ex-Govornor Bramlette, of Kentucky, re?
cently received a letter from New York, stating
that he had drawn a prize of a splendid gold
watch, worth $250, and that if he would send
them $13 60 to cover costs, the watch would be
sent him. Governor Bramlette humored the
thing, and wrote tbe Now York sharpers to
send the prize by express, C. O. D. This the
New Yorkers did, and the $13 50 was paid to
the express company. As was suspected, the
prize waa a miserable brass watch, worth about
$5. Having paid the charges, Gower nor Bram?
lette attached the money and the watch in the
hand of the express company. This attach?
ment will compel the express company to hold
both the watch and the money until judgment
ia rendered. The judgment will probably be
that the $13 50 be :eturned and the watch sold
to pay coate.
-The Badinai papers of the North are very

written by Judge Chase, on the occasion of
the recent decoration of Federal gravea at Mag?
nolia. The New York Sun says : "So tar as
concerns 'oblivion of past differences,' and
union in noble and generous endeavor to as?
sure the honor and welfare of our whole coun?
try, of all her States, an 1 of all ber citizens,'
every sensible man abates? Judge Chase's senti?
ments. But when ha expresses the hope that
loyal mes will join ie celebrating tbe heroism
of the rebels, whose nefarious efforts were the
cause of BO much bloodshed and destruction,
and of whose exploits the tax-gatherer as he
makes his daily rounds ia a perpetual reminder,
he goes too far, even for the clas3 whom he
thus endeavors to flitter. They cannot possi?
bly believe him to be sincere, while his loyal
fel!ow-oitiB9n8 must perforc3 loathe him as a
renegade and a turncoat, whose first principle
is self-advancement, and whoso patriotism all

but he has now sent in to the Common Council
his annual message, which is one of tho live?

kind ever presented. It abounds in ely bile
and witty denunciation of the course of the
State Legislature in taking away the principal
branches of government from officers elected
by the city, but it oontains, nevertheless, a
great ?nany practical recommendations which
will be generally approved by those cit leona
even who are most opposed to him in pol?tica.

-A Boston telegram, of Tue? -?y, to the New
York Herald, eays: "Ibo spokes and tire, and
everything else which goes to strengthen this
groat 'Hub of the Universe,' are being sadly
shattered and weakened by the incessant and
almost deafening noise and jar of tho rehearsals
for that great National Peaoe Jubilee musical
festival whioh ia to cjme off here next week.
It may truly and literally be said that 'there is
music in the air,' for on every pub'io thorough
faro, in every public hall, and in numerous
pr?valo dwellings and general business ho id
quarters there aro primary rehearsals going on
day and night; artillery, wind and string in?
struments, anvils and vooal combinations are
hoard everywhero, and there is a goueral and
sweetening har nony of noiao all around. There
was a sort of general vooal rehearsal of about
5000 voices in the Music Hall this evening, on
whioh occasion tho versatile Jubilee Gilmore
wielded the baton himself. The rehearsals
wera generally confined to the popular national
airs, and such strains aa 'Hail Columbia,'
'The 8tar Spangled Banner,' and the ?Harp
that Once Through Tara's Hall,' wero among
those which were rendered more loudly, more
sweetly and more effect!/ely than they over
wore before or ever will bo again, except in
the Coliseum during tho five days of Jubilee.
On tho morning preceding tho inauguration of
tho Jubilee there is to bo a goneral rehearsal of
tho whole vast chorus. Musically, financially
and otherwise, then, it soeuis that this gigan?
tic demonstration in honor of winding up the
groat war is to be a success. Crowds and
crowds are norning, if tlrV bespeaking of hotel
accommodations is any indication, and it is a
pretty suro thing that the week will be made a
pleasant one for all, and that when they re?
turn homo tbore will be a heartfelt and invol'
untary exclamation of "Let ns have Peace.' "
