The fair Doc? tor was dressed in fashionably ont unmention tionabJes of neat checkered green silk, with - black Lace strip s down the side, abort dress of the same material reaching jost below, the .knees, also handsomely trimmed, and a heavy flounce. A white lace collar and embroidered bosom, and neat fliting No. 8 gaiters, with a war prisoner's radge, completed the costume. The speaker opened with a definition of what lore, "pare love,'' ahem d be to make it lastiug, and claimed that it should be cherished and guarded aa other' holy emotions. 8he said0 there must be stability in the affections or there could be no true love. This position she elaborated at some length. Mutual confidence waa also urged as an absolute necessity. Jeal? ousy, so often charged upon married ladies, abe claimed waa often a sorrowing over inn doiity, w?ich ttey could not prove by man'? law, bat of which they felt too well assured. She denounced the laws whioh compelled man and wife to live together after hatred had been engendered whioh led to the hatred of the new? born child. She claimed that St. Paul meant no each submission on the part of wives os waa claimed at the present day. Man's- laws were severely criticised and condemned. A sketch of courtship and marriages in other times and countries, by society in different stages, from savage to enlightened, was ?riven, and' the conclusion drawn that there were greater wrongs, perpetrated in the.enlightened than in the lower grades._ CHARLESTON. WEDNESDAY MORNING, JUNE 9, 1809. Labor and tbe Crops. We'print, this morning, letters from oar attentive correspondents in Barnwell,' EJge?ald, Chester, Chesterfield, Orange? barg and Abbeville, containing accounts of the crop.prospects .'in' those.counties, to? gether with estimates of the area planted in cotton and breadstuffs this year) as com? pared with 1868. Similar letters from: other counties will be printed as we receive them, and within a week from this time our readers will have had before them the views of oar most experienced farmers and plant? ers, in every part of the State, ia regard to tko condition of the or ops, the probable I yield, and the manner in whioh the freed manare working. These letters will show, J a nutshell, - ohragrieultural position, and will, we be lie ve, form the most interesting and'com? plete reoetd of the kind ever published in. South Carolina. .. - "TTS- ?!?*???> -- Taxation Lu Ute State, y . . The Orangeburg Ne ws is indignant at the action of the ?State Board af Equalization, in'raising the valuation of real property in ?raijj'sb?rg;"from $1,444,O60: to'$4,882,?07. It says t?iat the lands in the .county were valued, ia the assessment made by the cou a ty bo ard, at their full market value, and-that the increased valuation of the real property in the county is "disproportionate, "unequal and unjust." We learn from the same source thai a meeting of ?he taxpay? ers was te be held on Monday last to con aider the action of the State board, and the Orangeburg News suggests that if the tax must be paid it may be done under protest, and the whole matter tested in the courts - Under th a ( ax law of 1868, the State Board of Equ dilation have full power to incroase or reduce the valuation of the real property' in the State. ' Ttiere is no limit to their au? thority, and we do not see that any relief oan be obtained from the courts. There is, indeed, but one way of esoaping from the enormous taxation which now oppresses the State, As long as the Rid ic al s remain in power, there will be fraud, extravagance and. waste in administering our fiscal affairs. Uia.ihe^adioal party-the party applaud : od and supported by the Orangeburg News Which is the cause of every evil of which the people of Orangebarg complain. This our contemporary will probably understand when it has more experience and less tem? per, irv v Oar .ilsnufacturing Population.. * Tat anxiety of the South to engage in manufactures is shown by the interest Whibti i(| everywhere taken in ail kinds of industrial undertakings. Cotton manufac? tures attract most attention; but those .of iron, linen aud wool have r ?oe ived th a ir share of notice i Ia this State we have also companies formed for th? manufacture of fertiHiers, and hope before long tb have mor?' than qWjBdg\r,refi?ejr7.'' 7?) . Our efforts in the direction of manufac? tur?e prooeed from a proper desire for oom Inereial independence And a wish for local growth and aivanceient. One great draw? back ie the want of capital.. This will gradually be overcome as we or?ate capital of oar - own, and by oar success attract m on ey from V i ro a i. A greater difficulty is tie want of suitable labor;, for although .out of tho thousands of Chinamen who are swarming to California we may obtain, if . we HO desire, laborers for our cotton and rice fields, we cannot expect to deriv? from ?this source experienced operatives far the mills whioh are being erected-in every part of the South."' Ia Eagland, however, in consequent of the cu rr eut troubles? there ara thousands of factory operatives who .re without work, And there is no good rea son why we' should not obtain enough of these'skilled workmen to supply all our wants. :.'<! ' The landon Time'3 says that emigration has been the great pamcaa dreamed of by the lancashire operativas for the evils of short time and low wages ever einctj (he cotton famine begad. Now we see th at the effjrt of the Preston mill owners and mau . ufaoturers to reduce wages has revived it, until it has spread through all of east and north lancashire. About one hundred spinners and winders' families had left one 1 of those to was for this couatry sinoe thc straggle bogan. The last mail tells us of eight families more following them, and an agent of American manufacturers in that country seeking workmen was sent for by the operatives to enlighten them and make arrangements for a greater exodus. At another town, Blackburn, subscriptions are being collected to forward one thousanl power loom weavers, who wish to come, and Who, coming, will repay the advances made, so os to enable others to follow them. The Spinners' Association there have voted five hundred pounds sterling from their muds, and doubled the weekly assessment, to equip members wishing to emigrate lo Americ i. Three detachments have already Mt under this arras gem eat. A meeting at Dir wen, a town hating 13.665 looms, deci? ded that mtndfcoiuring trade was leaving England for the United States, and that the operatives ought to follow; that labor was abundant, wages, were good, provisions and rents cheap, enjoyments and opportunities great in tao Catted States, and the policy of the operatives was to seek these advan? tages. Toe result was praotioil, and it was reaolved io rame ?5ti 18a. weealy and send twenty persons per month here, giving each $50 on landing. This shows what is the condition of the cotton trade in E igland, which is already sending to oar shores unusual numbers of sober and thrifty workmen. A similar exodus may be anticipated in the iron, wootton and other trades; and the South, by properly directed efforts, can easily secure ita share of this valuable immigration, and so enter upon Its manufacturing oaree* with unexpected advantages. This feature of the labor question de mands-the immediate and serious attention of all persons in the South who are inter? ested ia the encouragement and extension of Southern manufactures.
