Last Friday three negroes were to bo hang
at Halifax, N. C., for murder. One of them,
george Bobine, it bad been previously deter
Tuined to respite for 25 dave. What occurred
tte to tho other two is related as follovre, by a
correspondent of the Petersburg Exprese :
I arrived at Halifax at 25 minutes paat 12
o'clock. Found an enclosure on the front por?
tion of the Jail, 15 feet high, that would
admit of about oO or 70 persons standing in?
side. There were two or three hundred per?
sons outside, mostly colored. . After little
delay I obtained admittance to the enclosure,
and found 80 or 10 mon of both coloro inside,
among whom was a deputy sheriff, anxiously
inquiring for the sheriff. The prisoners were
condemned to be hanged between the hours of
12 and 1 o'clock. Ac about twenty minutes to
?1 by my watch, the sheriff entered the enclo?
sure, with a telegram in his hand, somewhat
excited. He hurriedly mounted the scaffold,
and commenced preparing the two ropes
around the beam. The sheriff soon asked the
time. Waa told by one bystander 15 minutes
to 1 o'clock, by auotber 7? minutes, and by a
lawyer present that it lacked 2u minutca to 1
o'clock. In a few moments the sheriff had the
criminals brought out of jail. They took their
stands immediately under the ropes attached
to the boatn.
At this moment the lawyer who said the
sheriff had SO minutes time, addressed him- <
?elf to thc nh cr ?ff and said that the time for
banging the camin?is bad expired, and called
upon those present to witness that he warned
the Bherinthat if he hung them bewonld do
so at hin i own peril, and outside of law and
justice, J "
I suppose some six or seven moments had
elapsed since he had said that the sheriff had
20 minutes. Very harsh words were pass?
ed between the si-er iff and said lawyer. At
this moment the sheriff intimated by his re?
marks that an effort was being made to pre?
vent him from c oing his duty. Great excite?
ment occurred at this time.
The sheriff then adjusted the ropeB around
the necks' of the criminals, and placed the
white capa over their heads aud faces. He then
stated that by his watch it lacked 9 minutes
of 1 o'clock; that he had received from the
Governor's secretar y in Haleigh a telegram of
respite; that he had telegraphed the eoe rolar y
that he could nob recognize this as official, and.
would be obliged to hang the criminals: that
the aoor et ar y then telegraphed him to wait
until the last moment, as be would telegraph
Governor Holden, in Baltimore. He then re?
marked that he would wait until two minutes'
to 1 o'clock, at winch time, unless he was in
receipt of a telegram trom Governor Holden,
he should launch the prisoners into ot r>

tween the sheriff and the lawyer before
mentioned; and considerable excitement was
shown by perdons present. Another lawyer
?resent went up to tho scaffold and addressed
tie sheriff J butwas told by him in very strong
language not to speak to bim. At this moment
a great conjraotiou and ou tory was heard out?
side of theenolosure, and the cry was heard, a
respite 1 a respite 1 The confusion and excite
ment here waB ii.d3Soribable. A man rushed
by the guard and into the gate with a telegram
which he binded the sheriff. The sheriff, with
his legal adrrser, retired to one corner of the
enclosure and read tho telegram* and; con?
sulted a fey moments. ..During thia consulta?
tion, every one became perfectly quiet, and the
stillness of death prevailed, the condemned
men standing perfectly still ou the Scaffold,
with the ropes and caps .adjusted as before
described :
Tho sheriff then came for . ard and eaid be
had received a telegram from Governor Hol?
den respiting the condemned until the 4th of
June. It would be useless to attempt to de?
scribe the scene of excited confusion that took
placa upon this announcement.
A shot was fired into the enclosure, and the
report was a prct ty loud one, adding, if possi?
ble, to the 'excitement and confusion. ' The
shot proved to be trom a pistol in the hand* of
* colored man bv the name of Hayes, one of
the representatives from thia county, who, tor
some unaccountable reason, came into the en?
closure with a cocked pistol in his hand. For
a wonder, in sn oh a crowd, the shot did no
damage.
Baker now spoke.for the first time since as?
cending the scaffold, and complained, that the
ropje was ohoking him, and said please take it
A voioe from the orowd said, "Gome down
from there. Gus Baker."
Baker seeming to recognize the .voice, the
oap still bel?g over bis face, exclaimed in a
tone stifled with emotion. "Oh my 1 Dudley."
Thomas did not utter a word while on the
scaffold that I heard. Tho sheriff now re?
moved the ropes and caps from the prisoners
and had th m returned to jail.' .
The sheriff then mvde a snort speech to the
excited crowd, saying in it that tba criminals
would be hung as certain as next Friday comes.

the surroundings interesting. Not far from
the mansion ia the mausoleum of the Prmca
Consort-a tall, equaio, brick tower with point?
ed root. No one ts allowed to visit the tomb
except on the anniversary of the Prince's
death. Then the radespeople of Windsor are
allowed to visit the shrine. The common people
loved the Prince very much and tbey bad reason
to, tor be was a kind master. In .> portion of
the royal ground* Prince Albert laid out his
model farm. He erected snperb buildings
and introduced all modern improvements,
tried all modern experiments, and gave the
country the benefit of bis experience. When
the sharp eye and vigilant hand of the Prince
lay cold iii death tho beauty ot the farm began
to declino. 1 Was there on Thursday, aod the
stillness of Pompei reigns over the place. The
exqulBitelv arranged quadrangular buildings
were desorted. Ono side, where the fifty-one
dairy cows are k.-pt. was in .rime order. The
Test showed neglect. A few pigs sporting in a

used at Frogmore is a metallic one, in shape
like a barrel, and rotary. Fans, pails and cans
all bore the roval monogram-"V. BV The
dairy is called ibo modern dairy. But no one
without a royal revenue coola afford suoh an
arrangement. Conspicuous in tbe room in
gold letters is the announcement that that
dairy was constructed bv Prince Albert "in the
twenty-fit st year of her Majesty's reign."
