Last Friday three negroes were to he hung
ai ffaiifaT, N. 0., for murder. One of them,
George Bayliue, it bad been previously deter
iBdned to respite for 25 days. What occurred
M to the other two is related as follows, by a
Correspondent of the Petersburg Express :
I arrived at Halifax at 26 minutes past 12
o'clock. Found an enclosure on the front por?
tion of tho Jail, 15 feet high, that would
admit of about 60 or 70 persons standing in
Side. There were two or three hundred per?
sons outside, mostly colored. After little
delay 1 obtained admittance to the enclosure,
and found 80 or 40 men ot both colote inside,
among whom was a deputy aneri ff, anxiously
Inquiring for the sheriff. The prisoners were
condemned to be hanged between the hours of |
12 and 1 o'o'ock. At about twenty minutes to
1 by my watch, the sheriff entered the* enclo?
sure, with a telegram in his hand, somewhat
excited. He hurriedly mounted the scaffold,
and commenced preparing the two ropes
around the beam. The sheriff soon asked the
time. Was told by one bystander 16 minutes
so 1 o'clock, by another 7? minnies, and by a
lawyer present that it lacked 3?. minutes to 1
o'clock. In a few moments the iheriff had the
criminals brought out of jail, '/hey took their
stands immediately under the ropes attached
to the beam.

sheriff had 80 minutes time, addressed him?
self to the sheriff and ?aid that, the time for

stated that by his watch it lacked 9 minutes
of 1 o'clock; that he had received from the
Governor's secretary in Raleigh a telegram of j
respite; that he had telegraphed the secretary
that he could not recognize this as official, and
Tfould be obliged to hang the criminals; that j
the secretary then telegraphed hun to wait

Governor Holden, in Baltimore. He then re?
marked that he would wait until two minutes
to 1 o'clock, at which time, unless be was in
repeint of a telegram trom Governor Holden,
he should launch the prisoners into et.r

mentioned, and considerable excitement was
ahown by persons present. Another lawyer
present went np to the seafield and addressed
the sheriff, but waa told by him in very strong
language no t to speak to bim. At this moment
a great commotion and outcry was heard out?

Baker seeming to recognize the voice, the
cap s till being over bis face, exclaimed in a
tone stifled with emotion. "Oh my I Dudlev."
Thomas did not otter a word while on the
scaffold thar I heard. The sheriff now re?
moved the ropes and oaps from the prisoners
and had tm m returned to jail.

Consort-a tall, square, brick tower with point

d ath. Then the radespeople of Windsor are
allowed to visit the shrine. The common people
loved tne Prince very much and they bad reason
to, for be was a kind master, lu ?> portion of
the royal ground* Pr mc Albert laid out his
model farm. He erected superb buildings
and introduced all modern improvements,
tried all modern experiments, und gavb the
country the benefit of tua experience. When
the sharp eye and vigilant hand of the Prince
lay cold in death tbe beauty of the farm began
to decline. I was there on Thursday, and the
stillness of Pom pei reigns over the place. Ibo
exquisitely arranged quadrangular buildings
were deserted. One side, where the fifty-one
dairy cows are kept, was m >rime order. The
rest showed neelec'. A tow pigs sporting in a,
pen exhibited alt tho Ute to be seen on tue
farm.
