mense, structure. Travellers on the railroads
entering the western part of the city are at?
tracted by the magnitude of the building as it
now appears. A visit to tho locality reveals
more strking y the extent of the great undertak?
ing. The work h td progressed with the rapidity
predicted by the warmest friends of the enter
?zise. Upwards of two hundred men have
eeo constantly employed by the contractors,
and divided into gangs, each under an ex?
perienced kroman. About $30,000 worth Ot
?Umber has been furnished thus fir, and itv is
of a quality to insure strength in every part ol
the immense structure. The centre of tho
roof, which is to be heavily trussed, will be
supported by hoes of upright pillars of the
etrongoBt kimbor.
To afford u oetter idea of the structure I
?note a few figures in reference to it: The
Coliseum will bo 300 by 600 feet; will require
1,700,000 feet of lumber in its construction, and
vwl Cover between three and four acres of
rtr?und, or about 150,000 feet. There will also
be used in toe work fifteen tons of nails, and
between four and live tons of other iron work,
such as holts, braces, &o. To cover the root
so as to matte it waterproof thirty tons of
tarred paper wiil be used. All outside foun?
dations are live by six feet, and fifteen inches
thick; centre foundation, supporting roof,
eight feet square and eighteen inches thick,
au bedded in solid gravel, making, in all, five
hundred foundation supports. The apex of
the roof is eightv-Six feet from top of sill, At
a height of flt. y feet ttere will bo 1300 foot of
continuous windows, five feet high, all made
io ian on roil : rn, for ventilation, consisting of
.3600 feet of g lass. In the upright of the build?
ing lhere are to be 1868 lights of glass. Twelve

entire circuit ot the structure-1600 feet.
