ture of three more expeditions for Cuba. The
schooner General Putnam had a full cargo Of
arras and ammunition and a number of recruits
on board, and she sailed for Inaugua, one of
the Bahama Islands, and then oe, a distance of
" ono hundred and eighty miles, the cargo and
men were sent across to Cuba. On th3 4th and
5th two steamers were secured by the agents
of tho Junta, at a cost of 880,000 each, and each
sailed for a port in Ute Weat Indies. These
vessels took ont over five hundred veterans of
the late war, who had enlisted to serve under
C?spedes. They were under tho oommand of
? Cohan general who had selected a foll staff Of
American officer*. Among the war materials
which constituted tbs cargo were the follow

broach of the neutrality laws.
-We are at last to have a Martin vs. Mack
onoohio case in this country. Bishop McTl
vaino, of Ohio, and one of his "refractory"
presbyters, Hov. Mr. Tate, have bared their
unbuttoned foils ior a real ritualistic fight.
The bishop has no lovo for anthetic religion;
Mr. Tate's ritualistic oxocssaa, as they oowuu to
Dr. McUvaine, are very slight, indeed, when
measured by tho New York standard. At the
request of his congregation, he introduced a
surplici d choir, and " authorized processional
singing of psalms and hymns by a procession
of choristers entering the church door." At
tho request of his bishop to discontinue the
practice he refused, thinking tbat it was a
matter for the vestry and not the blshor) to de?
cide. Whereupon the bishop sommons him
before an ecclesiastical tribunal, oharged with
violating his pt omise to " conform to the wor.

came up recently bofore the Amerioan Churct

We believe tfeat Mr. David Barrow, who
takes his 8?at as an Alderman from Ward
8 at caoh meeting of the City Council, and
probably proposes to do BO at tho meeting
of Council to be held to night, is not an
Alderman, and has np right whatever to
aot in that capacity.
Mr. Barrow was elected Alderman from
Ward 8, on the Pillsbury tiokety on Novem?
ber 10, 1868, at whioh time he resided in
Anson-street, in the ward whioh he was
eleoted to represent. His house in Aneon
Btreet, however, was subsequently sold, he
moved out of Ward 8, and now lives in
Bee-slreot, in Ward 6. By removing from
Ward 3, Mr. Barrow vacated the office of
Alderman, and nothing short of a popular
?lection can give him the right to a seat in
Council.
Th? law on the subjeot is found in "An
?.act to alter and amend so muoh of the
"second olause of the charter incorporating
"the City of Charleston as relates to the
"qualification of votera for Intendant and
"Wardens, and for other purposes therein
"mentioned," passed December 18, 1817,
and is in theo? words': -
"Provided, That the perBons BO to be
"eleoted for eaoh ward shall, at the time
"of eleotion, in addition to the other qual?
ifications prescribed by law, be resi?
dents of the ward for whioh they are
"eleoted, and that tn removal from the same,
"his or their o?eet SHALL BKOOMB VACANT,
"and a new eleotion be ordered by the City
"Council of Charleston."
This is perfectly clear, and in at least two
instances of late years an eleotion has
been held to fill a vacanoy caused by the
removal of an Alderman from the ward
from which he was elected. Mr. Barrow
removed from Ward 8 and now lives in
Ward 6, and if these facts aro correctly
elated, has no more right to sit in Council
as Alderman from Ward 3 than is pos?
sessed by any of the many loafers who may
be found in the streets of Charleston.

workshops; all trades flourish with them; they
have fine and productive agriculture, and raise
Cattle that are famous. They have long fed
mining populations around thom with tho
products of their farms, and have fashioned
ont of their mountain home the "garden of
the West." The regions of the South to
which the immigrant is invited, while posses?
sing all the advantages to whioh an established
civilization and civil organisation can confer,
