Exp rx) SIVE OHA.-Professor j ?handlerj the Analytical Chemist of the Metropolitan Board of Health, recently tested several specimens of so-called k eros one oil, which were purchas? ed at various stores in New York City. . Of sov. enteen samples not one was of th? standard quality, and many were ' "highly dangerous." Seven Of th? number were not, kerosene oil at all, btit benzine Ot" naptha, "tho most danger? ous portion of tho natural petroleum." Ac? cording to Professor Chandler it. is impossible by any means to render benzine, gasoline and ! naptha non-explosive. He has no faith in "pa? tent safety lamps." He pronounces them wholly "unreliable." THE SCHOOL OP THE,KEV. A. T. POBTEB.-The Baltimore Gazette saya: "The monthly report of the Pioneer Southern Educational Aid So? ciety is certainly most creditable to the friends and supporters of the school in Charleston. Of the total expenditures for borne and school, amounting together to $1039 95, the sum of $540 20 has been provided for in South Caro lipa. We have had a great deal of rain up to this time, and the Weather has been cold. The caterpillar has already made its appearance in the cotton fields, and in some of my neighbors' fields they are now stripping the young plants of its leaves. Our only hopes now are that a spell of hot dry weather may destroy the worms. If the ram continues I think the crop will be eaten up by the first day of June." Another letter dated. Gainesville, Alachua County, Fia., May 10, to the same firm, says : "I regret to say that your information as to the presence ol the caterpillar in bur county is too true ; they have already damaged many farms in the county, which is very alarming, JO much so that many ate offering to sell out their; interest' at a considerable Bftvjritice; 5 there are m ore hopeful and' pa t len tty await? ing the development of realities, lt ; may be that the present crop of worina' may disappear | tinder the influence of the hot sun, and- that the second crop will not appear.
