pikes were never used, and were sold a few
weeks ago in Augusts. It is rumored that
these are the "arms of the most improved pat?

Friday, the 7th inst., says : " We leam that
freights to New York on vegetables and fruits
bare been raised one hundred per cent, and |

cents, sod peaches from twenty-five to eighty
cents per bushel. These increased rates will
hare s tendency to so i ncr eas a the prices of |
early vegetables in New York that there will be ,
no demand, and consequently f-uits and vege
tabels will lie and rot where they are produced,
as the demand in this vicinity is not by any
meaos aa great as the sup pi y. This action opon
the part of the companies has caused a great
deal of discontentment among truck growers.

The scholars of Graco Church Sabbath
Behool enjoyed a pionic at Payne's Farm on

An ingenious young lady of oar city makes
an excellent imitation of coral out of raisin ?
stems dipped in sealing wax. A specimen will
be at the fair to-night.
MEMORIAL DAT-It will be borne in mind
that to-day must be fulfilled the solemn duty
of decorating the graves of the Confederate
dead, whether in the pubtio or private ceme?

wreaths and decorations are requited, and it
is hoped that they will be supplied to the wag

of the return home of the Winyahs and Sala?
manders. Our firemen thank their visiting

and assure them that i hey are not forgotten by
the Charleston Fire Department :
Many anxious eyes looked for the arrival of
the steamer Emilio, on Friday last, and our
firemen were in full uniform to receive their
brethren. But disappointment was visible on
the features of all at the non-arrival of the
steamer. On Saturday mornins. however, tho
Emilie steamed np to tho wharf with ber col?
ors fl. ins. and quite a crowd assembled to hear
what the Winyahs had to say. The conduct of
our boys on the occasion of the late parade in
Charleston meets the hearty ap, roval of all,
and from what we can learn, their efforts were
highly appreciated. It is conceded ibat they
were second on the list, and have no reason to
be ashamed of their place in the picture. We
hear continued enoominmB bestowed upon the
warm reception and cordial hospitality they
received by their brethren, the Stonewalls ;
and it will be manv a long day before th dr
visit to tho good old " City by the Sea " fades
from the memory of the Winyahs and Sala?
manders. On Saturday evening an entertain?
ment was given by the Salamanders that carried
us back to the good old days of the past, and
the only wonder is, in these days when the
housekeepers find it so bard to provide, bow so
many choice viands were sot at. The evening
faesed off in mirth, sentiment and song, until
be noon of Dight reminded the assembly that
Sunday was near at band. We understand the
Winyahs are to give an entertainment next
week, at which they expect some of their
Stonewall friends to be present.
THE VISITING SCHUETZEN.-After the festivi?
ties of the Schuetzenfest closed on Friday
night, the celebrants returned to the city
and enjoyed a ball, given at Lindstedt's ball,
whioh was kept up with unabated zest until the
small honra of morning. On Saturday, the
visitors were entertained by tbeir friends here,
by showing them around the city in vehicles
and on foot. Champagne and lager were
liberally poursd'out in the private residences
to which they were invited. In the afternoon
the visitors were escorted to the steamship
Champion with Muller's brass baud at thoir
heao. Aboard of the vessel, parting senti?
ments were drank, and champagne aud lager
mercilessly punished. Speeches were made
by Professor Meier, Captains Melobers of the
Charleston Club, and Gerd ea of the New York
Cl ab, and others, and a jolly time bad gene?
rally. The Charleston Schuetzen gave the New
Yorkers and New Jerseyians barrels'of lager
as parting tokens, and in turn received a barrel
from the recipients. "All aboard" was Bound?
ed, the decks were cleared, and the good ship
and visiting Schuetzen passed out of tbe pier
amidst cheering and hearty hurrahing and
other demonstrations of "God-speed."
The Fest has been an immense succoas, pe?
cuniarily and otherwise, and satisfaction is
experienced on all sides. The Aug ustians re?
turned on Fnday and Saturday, in "broken
doses."_
