'1 HE MONUMENTAL FAIB.-There was a great
accession to thc number of visitors at the Fair
last night, and the tables rich in au innumer?
able variety of supplementals that were to be
seen ou tho two past evenings. As fast as the
articles are rafflad thoy are replaced by seem?
ingly better ones. The tables generally are
really worth especial observation; look well at
the beautiful pieces of woman's handiwork;
see what tho pains-taking labor of man has
contributed, all so tastily and prominently ar?
ranged, so that they can come within the range
of the eye at a glance.
The Juvenile tnble, on the north side of the
hall, with its abundance of small wares to
please the young lollt, is not the least interest?
ing feature of tho entertainment.
The balloting for the Firemen's Prize is get?
ting intensely exciting, and each company is
beginning to Bhow ils strength and come up in
phalanxes. The lidies, too, aro interested in
their favorites, and aro aa earnest in their soft
entreaties as woman can be. The conics' is a
sharp one, and seems to be the source of some
excitement in the Department.

doubt be sought after by many as precious me?

the Aladdin lamp of pleasuro, he cannot pro?
duce any amount of illusion, which for tho
time satisfies and allures, lot bini visit the
Schuetzenplatz, and have all doubts removed.
On this broad globo, f. om the candle - ea ting
Nova Zemblans to Botany Bay, there is not a
nation to be found who combino tho hard, in?
dustrious business of life with its O dulce con
cento more happily, more appropriately, or
more refreshingly than the Gorman people.
Home-like and homogenooua in taste and asso?
ciation, they rally together and aro knit as
with hooks of steel. In every community in?
fluences radiate from their comminglings
which give it character and strength, and they
in turn create for themselves a reputation for
sense and solidity whioh younger nations
have in vain striven to emulate.
Americans and Englishmen enjoy their horse
races, yaoht clubs and ball matches. These
are for men and muscle. The German, cn the
other hand, domesticates his amusements,
and make them such as his jr au and kindon
can enjoy and embalm in memory. Wife and
children are his companions in pleasuro, and
so to speak, sanctify its innocence.
Such is tho chat aoter of the enjoyments at
the present Sohuetzenfest. Those who desire
to teat the accuracy of eye and rifle may spend
honre in shooting at targets, and hoping for a
prize; while the mere "looker on in Vienna"
cannot fail to be amused by a programme ol
entertainment that will touch every muscio lu
his entity from the zygomaticus major to the
remotest connections of bis diaphragm.
Do you want to laugh ? Look at the row of
microscopic humanity awaiting their turn to
take a five cent piece out of a bowl of molas
sos. Hie little round faces come up out of tba
cavernous depths polished like the rosewood
balls with which you knock down tenpins, and
dash through the crowd with blinded eyes for
the nearest pirthp.
Look at innocent youths, who think they
can perform gym nasties on a roller that trips
them into a huge bag of charcoal on ono side
or flour on the other. * '
Look at infantile specimens who, for a prof?
fered prize, attempt to eat a saucer of browa|
sugar in tho shortest given space of time, and
watch the distortions that a 'tend the process
of deglutition.
Note the industry with which that modern
ragamuffin "shinnys" up the greased pole,
striving with all tho ambition of a young Ame?
rican to reach the top wero hangs his reward
in shape of fiddle or watch, moving, how?
ever, not unlike a pig on fee.
Observe those bareheaded little urchins tied
up in a sack, with nothing but their beads visi?
ble, jumping spasmodically after each other
like so many animated Egyptian mummies.
Go into tho ball room and enjoy a dance
while Muller pipos German music into German
"pedestals,-' which pirouette without regard to
youth or age. The ruddy faoes of healthy and
baautiful women will beam on you, and sturdy
fellows, whoso Teutonic avoirdupois kick the 1
scales at two hundred and fifty, will invite you
down stairs to zwei lager and sweitzer k?se.
It's fun-honest, innocent enjoyment, such as
Americans know not now to or?ate, but amply
appreciate and covet.
To detail every style of amusement spread
upon the programme, would fill a page. But
we venture to say that no one who has visited
the Schuetzenplatz, or who may do so to-day,

apuntry air, feel that he has devoted himself to
a few hours of innocent recreation calculated
to infuse fresh vigor Into his frame, and renew
bis strength for the more BOlid toils of life.
As we have said, the Sohuetzenfest isa grand
dorman festival, but thia year it is something
inore. The aim of the managers has been to
make it a "Volkfost," a "People's Festival,''
and in this they have this year succeeded.
Adversity has caused us to know eaoh other
t>etter than before. We have learned to meet
without jarring when the opportunity is given
ts it was yesterday. Teuton, Hibernian, Eng?
lishman and American join hands under the
aannor of pleasure and become firm, fast
friends in the bond of innocent onjojment.
Nor were the ladies wanting. They made the
Platz bright with their presence. All Charles
on was there, and who could say more.
One of the incidents yesterday was the bal?
con ascension. This machine would not be
kept down. Like the head of a Sohuetzen it
vould rise and it bounded away over tbe trees,
leforo the riflemen m charge were altogether
.cady. Better luck next time.
The velocipede race was also a novel sight.
Chere were two races, one for the fastest veloc
pedian and the other for the slowest. The
sst prize-an inlaid inkstand-was won by
fr. Wo S. Henerey, Jr. The slow prize-six
?ottlea of cologne-waa won by Mr. John A.
ioroso. The riding was excellent.
During the day the pip-papping at the eagle
nd the various targets went on without inter
aisslon. Mr. Torok, of East Bay, who is one
if the best marksmen in town, shot away the
aft leg of the eagle, winning a prize. The
amons bird had been plated with boiler iron,
?ut this was riddled like a sieve, and it is hoped
hat the two wings, tail and body will be taken
?if the bush to-day. The general shooting
ras good. Mr. Clusius, one of the New York
lohuetzen, made forty-four centre hits-seven
>n Wednesday and thirty-seven yesterday.
This, we believe, is the highest point made,
mo of the Charleston Sohuetzen made thirty
>ne centres.
To day special prizes will be put up for the
?assivo number? and the general public Six
trizes at least will be shot for io this manner.
Another feature yesterday was the singing
?y the S?ngerbund and Genna-iii Sooioty.
Their voices, blending in the rioh harmonies
if German muslo, floated bewitchingly on the
?lr and attracted a crowd of listeners.
It is proper here to say that the officers of
he society and the Committees on Arrange?
ants and amusements have exerted them

?ese. They h uve been worked nearly to death,
.nd have had no time to amuse themselves;
?ut they have scoured the pleasure of their
lountrymen and friends, and have given us a

THE MASS MEETINO which was to have been

Louisiana Labor Association, and others, did

This brigade waa composed of t lib best fight?
ing material in the Confedorate army, lt
nerved gallantly in the aiege of Charleston,
enduring alf the hardships of Sumter and
Wagner, and won new laurels at Bcntonvillo
and Averysboro', N. C., where both regimonts
we/e decimated. Since the war the command
has been scattered over Dixie, and if tho long
roll were now sounded responses^pcould bo*f
beard from' the Potomac to the Bio Grande.
The absent officers and men will be pleased to
learn of the effort being made to erect a monu?
ment over their honored dead, and will gladly
assist their former comrades in this good

A meeting of the surviving officers, in
Charleston, of the South Carolina Brigade of
Regulars, consisting of the Fust South Caro?
lina Artillery, First South Carolina Infantry
and Lucas' Battalion, was held in this city on
the 28th April, 1869, for the purpose of organ?
izing an association, and in order to raise funds
sufficient to erect a suitable monument to their
deceased officers and men.
