Kinsman |& Howell yesterday made a shipment to the North of early cucumbers. They were raised : upon the plantation of Mr. John Chadwick, of I Wadmalaw Island, and are fully three weeks in advance of the usual season. THE ANNUAL PICNIC of the inmates of the Orphan House takes place to-day, at Porcber's farm, Northeastern Bai broad. Guests who a re enable to lea76 on the e&rlv train ?t eight o'clock, A. M., can leave in the accommodation train at 1 30 P. M. which will stop at the grounds. HALF FABE.-We are authorized to state that delegates to the Physician's Convention, to be held in New Orleans on the 4th of May, willie passed over the route from Columbia and Charleston, via Chattanooga and Grand Jnnction to New Orleans, for one fare-paying foll fare going, and returning free. ROBBERY OF Corro?.-On the night of the 26th instant the establishment of Mr. Ancker, on Ad ger's wharf, was entered, and two bales of cotton taken therefrom. Yesterday Officer Nipaon, of the detective force, recovered the cotton from the party to whom it bad been sold, and has a clue to the robbers. THE TRUMPET AGAIN.-At the close of the Orphan'.^ entertainment, last evening, which was crowded to excess, the Marion was ahead in the trumpet contest. Unless the other com? panies vote more generally the silver trumpet will certainly be borne off by the Marions. The entertainment will continue for four nights longer. In consequence of Mr. P. H. Hughes benag called North, Phil. Bachheit, Jr., Esq., has been appointed Secretary and Treasurer. PERSONAL.-Colonel John W. Forney, of the Washington Chronicle and Philadelphia Pres?, with a party of Northern capitalists, reached here yesterday by the Northeastern train, and are atavia:; at the Charleston Hotel. Yester? day afternoon they were riding around the .city, accompanied bj Governor Scott, Attor? ney-General Chamberlain, Mayor Clark and others. They leave to-day for Savannah. Ufes. THB FIRE which ocenrred yesterday morning io the tobacco store of Marzyck & Duensing, on the weat Bide of King-street, a few doora north of George-strdet, originated in the lower back room, and ia supposed to have been accidental. The proprietors of the store lost, they say, about $2500 tn stock carried off and damaged by water. The stock waa insured in the Georgia Homo Insurance Company, of j which Mr. Hutson Lee is agent, for $1500. The building is owned by Mr. Isaac Harris, who lives above the segar store. The firemen, though jaded from the exercises of tho parade, were promptly on the spot-the Stonewall throwing on the first water and the ??:na the second._ THE FATE OP THE WASHINGTON LIGHT IN? FANTS* CHABITABLE ASSOCIATION, for the purpose of raising means to erect a monument over their dead, and to assist the charity fund, will be opened on Monday evening, May 3d, at seven P. M., at Hibernian Hall. It will be con? ducted under the auspices of some of the most prominent citizens of the city and State, and be in charge of the ladies. The preparations that are in progress warrant the opinion that itftffill be an entertainment of peculiar ele? gance and refinement. The advertisement an? nouncing the managers will be found else? where. Already the erection of the tables are in progress, and no pains will be spared to mike the fair a pleasant and attractive resort. FESTIVITIES OF TEE Flit EKES'. A Pleasant Party at Chief Nathan's Departure of the Georgia-./! Humor ons Incident-Presentation to th Washingtons of Augusta. Afcer enjoying a Eight's rest, tho firemen were ready yesterday for the winding: up of tho annual celebration. They were to bo seen on all sides, coing to and from the several engine houses, which were kept open all day for the especial accommodation of tho visitors. Some rode about with their Charleston friends, and some went on excursions around the harbor. Tho Georgias were taken care of by ex President F. J. Porcher, of the Phoenix, in his yacht, in which they visited tho various points of interest in tho harbor. Th-, members of tho Georgia left for home last night, and the Palmettoes, of Columbia, after enjoying a fine collation at tbe houso of their lio?ts, the Washington*, got ready to leave this morning. The Winyabs will remain ovor until Friday, when they will be safely escorted to the steam? er for Georgetown by their friends, the Stone? walls. A PLEA3ANT ENTERTAINMENT. The Cliief of the F re Department of Charles? ton, SI. H. Nathan, Esq., yesterdiy entertain? ed, at bis residence io St. Philip-street, a large number of gontlemen, including, not merely the Presidents and other representa? tives of our own Fire Department, but mem? bers of the visiting companies. The object of the gathering was to mark, in a social and family way, as it were, the kindly greeting which Charleston extends to her firemen guests. In this disposition Mayor Clark united with the officers of our Department, and all contributed to render the occasion one that will be pleasantly remembered by those who participated. The tables were richly Bpread, tbe hospitality was more than generous-it was prodigal-and with the speech and merry? making of the afternoon, none who were pres? ent will find fault. Unfortunately, one cannot record in the pu bbc prints the good things said and sung; bnt we doubt if there has been an occasion since the war when wine 'and whit have flowed more abundantly, or left a more enduring record upon tbe annals of thc social life of visiting firemen. PB ES ESTAITON TO THE WASHINGTONS, OF AUGUSTA. The Washingtons, of Augusta, entertained by thc Germans, presented the latter with the likeness of Wm. Bryson, Chief of the Augusta Firo Department, which adorned their engine when they reached the city and during the parade. Brief speeches were made expressing sentiments of the kindest mutual regard. The Germana will escor; the Washingtons to the depot this morning, and before leaving they will be presented with a good picture of their hosts in Chalmers-street. A HUMOROUS INCIDENT, Which happened at tho collation of tho Phoenix day before yesterday, bas leaked ouL, and is too good to be lost. Treasurer W. T. Williams, chief of tho "Ku-Klux" of the Georgia, had an immense tin horn, packed in straw in ? box that resembled a coffin. It was gravely laid across tho banquet table, and Captain Tupper wa3 requested to open the mystic box. He at once called upon a trusty axman of the com? pany, but this being objected to, be gently opened tho box himself, when tbe trumpet was taken out amid shouts of applause. Captain Tupper mounted the table with due gravity, aud at once presented it to a well-known soo o : Anak of tbe company, who was ordained to carry tho precious beir-loom at every parade and fire for the next twelve mouths. DEPASTURE OF THE GEORGIA. The Pheonix company assembled at their en? gine bouso yesterday afternoon, at 5 o'clock, to take leavo ot their guests of th 3 ' Georgia," of Augusta. A table was spread, and after the touching of glasses, Captain Wm. Aiken Kelly, first div , tor of the Pheonix, in behalf of his company, presented the Georgia with the ban? ner of welcome that had been extended across thc street. Captain Ad ima, of t he Georgia, re? ceived the souvenir in a brief response. Cap tain Adams, in turn, presented thc Pheonix w>tb a large picture of his engine and her officers. Captain George Tupper, of tho Pheonix, responded in a felicitous speech, in which be referred to the pleasant relations established between the two companies, and how much gratification he, as well as the mem? bers of bis company, had experienced in being permitted to entertain the Georgia. He pro? mised that the picture presented should occu? py a conspicuous place in the hall, and that it would be preset ved as long as the company existed. The Georgia, escorted by a deputation from the Pho lix, in command of Director Kelly, hauled the ongine to tho South Carolina Rail? road for shipment borne. The officers and some of tho members left last night, but a number of them remained. THE UNITED STATES COURT, Aran. 28-HON. GEORGE 8. BBYAN, PRESIDING.-Tn ike Circuit Court, J. B. In the case of the Pennsylvania Salt Jlanutae turing Com? pany against Holmes & Calder, for infringe? ment of patent, it was ordered that the ds'end ants give security for costs ia the sum of $1000. _____ THE BEADING LAST NIGHT.- -A gool house greeted the appearance of Mrs. O'Donovan (Roasa) laat evening, and her recitation proved, as we bad been led to expect, a rare literary treat. Superadded to a charming person, Mra. O'Donovan possesses a rcmirltablc voice. It has all the tenderness of tho gentler sex, aud yet all thc strength usually looked for among the lords of creation. She seems equally at home in the domaius of pathos and humor; she glides with thc moat amazing versatility from the spirit-stirring deeds of the "Brigade at Fontenoy" to tbe neglected stockings of "Mol? lie Muldoon;" from the heartrending emotions of the "Visit to the Priaon" to thc wall-kissing proclivities of "Pj.ramus and Tbiabe.'' Pye, it is understood, have come to an understanding that the amount of compensation to be paid the Oriental shall be $1700; this award, however, will have to be con? firmed by the action of tbe court. This sum is said to bo about forty per cent, on the value of vessel a id cargo. Tho grounds of the claim were, that the British brig J. L. Pye, of St. John's TS. B., totally dismasted, was fallen in with at sea, by th* steamship Oriental, on ber passage from Boston for New Orleans; the lat? ter having on board a cargo of iron, clay, ?cc., from London for Philadelphia, was towed about four hundred miles to this port.
