have a bushel of them; but on each succeeding
occasion they should prove a mile-atone In
your career, to point you to fresh endeavors.
I transfer it to my successor, your first vice
President, L. D. Mowry, Esq. As most of you
aro aware I shall soon have occasion-and a
most sorrowful one it will be-to resign the
office I have so long held. Indeed. I probably
appear to-day for the last time, while living, in
your uniform ; but I desire to say here and
now, that the associations I have enjoyed during
a connection of thirty-four years with the Vig
ilant Fire Company, are a part of my being
which cannot be severed: and when I am oalled
to the repose of my forefathers, I desire to go
hence in that uniform, which, aa it has been
dear to me in lite, I would still have do me
honor in the grave.
In some very pertinent remarks, Captain
Tupper then extended the hospitalities of his
company to the Winyahs, of Georgetown, dur
ing their stay in Charleston, and plainly inti
mated to the " Stoner, alls" that his latch
string always hung oat.
A Pleasant Incident.
Yesterday morning, between 8 and 9 o'clock,
the Pheonix boys marched to tho house of the
Marions, in Cannon-street, and carried with
them a live fox, which had been captured in
the burnt district by Messrs. C. Pennal and
George Honour, of the Pheonix. President
Tupper, of tho Phoenix presented it to the
Marions in the following words :
In behalf the Phoenix, I take great pleasure
in presenting to you, Mr. President, one of the
most unsociable animals that was ever hunted
and caught in the heart of a oity, and I beg that
he may receive a kindly welcome from those
whose association bears the name of the noble
old Swamp Fox, Marion.
The vagrant habits of this cunning and in
quisitive quadruped are not apt to co ni mond
him favorably to yoting firemen, who are sel
dom out after dark; but I feel assured that in
your good keeping his wicked ways will be re
formed, and while your command possesses all
of hisjwide-awake qualities, I trust he will imi
tate his masters, and become genial, and gen
reos, and brave.
I thank the little artful wretch for bringing
us together, and I know the goad fooling
which has always existed between the two
companies will become stronger from to-day,
and that this will lead to many reunions,
marked by the most cordial harmony and the
kindest and most fraternal regard.
President Barkley, in accepting the queer
but welcome present, said :
Mr. President and Brother Firemen of the
Phoenix-On behalf of the Marion Fire Engine
Company, whom you have so highly honored
in th is profession of you: friendship, and sup*
port, it becomes my pleasant duty to assure
you of a reciprocal ourrent from the company
whom I represent. The gift we hail is as dearly
welcome, aa it is appropriate; fer if his great
prototype possessed the qualities of the "fox,"
be was not at the same time devoid of those of
the phoenix. We yield, Mr. President, a grate
ful acknowledgment of your kindness, and
most gladly undertake to advance this revival
of a pleasant arv] profitable association to a
full and complete fruition.
After tho presentation a collation was served
in the yard of the Marion, of which the Phoenix
and Marion boys partook. They then escort
ed the Marions to the Citadel Green, where
both companies took their plaoes in the line.
The Marions were also presented by Mr. E. D.
Woodruff, Jr., of Philadelphia, with a series of
engravings of scenes in the life of a fireman, a
stuffed fox, and a lot of belts, equipments, Ac
Incidents and Accidents.
Mr. E. D. Woodruff, Jr., of the Philadelphia
Fire Association, had his place in the long
line dressed in his fireman's uniform.
While the engines were getting ready the
I drum corps of the United States army heat
, splendid tunes that enlivened the whole neigh

Mr. W. McLemor., Washington's of
Augusta, in trying to recover the tMUn of
his company, which had fallen during the mu,
slipped and injured his knee, though not seri
ously.
When the Etna returned to their houBe. on
motion of Secretary Nixson, the < >"*f any gave

ner flung cross the street.
Yesterday morning, Mr. C. C. Wightman
presented his company, In behalf of Mr. Thoa.
Wightman, artist, with a fine oil painting of
Mr. Wm. H. Gibson, one of the founders and
presidents of the JEtna. President Willis re
ceived the gift and returned thanks in appro
priate terms. Mr. Wightman also presented
to the company a beautiful flag, of white and
blue silk, the handiwork of his wife. It was
received with suitable remarks by vice-Presi
dent Nipson.
The JEtnas last night had a jolly time at
their headquarters, entertaining the friends of
the visiting and other companies.
At the Guardhouse, after the procession had
been reviewed by the Mayor and Aldermen.
Roberts, the caterer, served np a goodly lunch,
to whioh justice was done by the Mayor and
Aldermen and a few invited, guests, including
the Board of Firem sters.

If anybody fears the midnight conflagration,
let him remember that the hand engines of
Charleston can run twelve hundred yards and
throw water into his bed chamber in two
minutes and thirteen seconds; that the steam
engines can do the same distance and deluge
him in four minutes and a half; and that al
though everything may be burning up down
'stairs, the hook and ladder companies can take
him ont ol a four-story attic window in just
two minutes and eight seoonds, in a manner
whioh. will convey to his mind the pleasant illu
sion of being a personified streak of lightning.
