O'Mara, th 3 Fourth Director of the Marion Fire Com? pany, died yesterday evening very suddenly. He had been tolerably well the night previous, and was with his comrades at the engine house. Ho served the company for a long time aa treasurer. THE WHITE FAWN, with its beautiful socnery .and effeots, including the Parisian Corps de Ballet, will be produced at Hibernian Hall this evening, by the Whitman company. . Miss Jen? nie Kimball, the star, is a pleasing and meri? torious actress, and sings charmingly; aud the rest of the company give her a credible and efficient support. *> -^ A GENERAL HOLIDAY.-In compliance with the suggestion of THE NEWS, a number of prominent houses in King-stroot have ' decided io oloae their doora to-morrow in honor of the Firemen's Parade. The wholesale houses and the merchants of the Bay and the wharves should emulate this generous example. Let ns have a holiday by all means. * FAST TIKE-The Augusta Constitutionalist of yesterday says : " The Washingtons were .out with their machine last night, about ton .o'clock, practicing Jor the Charleston celebra? tion'. They ran a distance of 460 yards, un? reeled one hundred feet ot hose and threw a stream of one hundred and fifty feet in two minutes and fifteen seconds. Beat this it you can." THE WANT OF WATER_There ia a general scarcity of water in the city; a number of the cisterns have run dry, and the people on all .ides are sorely pressed. There are several of tire public pumps on the streets- that need re? pair, especially the one in Meeting-street, near the Guardhouse. If this evil were remedied, the distress might in a measure be relieved. A good long rain just now would be generally welcomed. PRIZES ron nut GRAND PARADE.-There are on exhibtioD at Wbilden's, corner of King and Beaufain streets, five elegantly chased silver goblets, inlaid with gold. They are the prizes to be dis tributed on the 27 ch to the winning companies; One for the steamers, one for the hund?'engines, one for the trucks, and two for the visiting companies, one hand and one e team. These prize3 are to be presented in bena! of the Board of Firemasters, by George H. Walter, Esq., after the contest. They are beautiful specimens of workmanship, and will re .nain on inspection to-day. FOUR TEEN-AND-A-HALF A DAY.- Aocording to the Abbeville Press, the following offices of "honor and trust" are held by a colored man, Hotson 3. Lomax, who may be a very fair carpenter, but wbo has neither native intelli? gence nor the commonest education. Wo add the rates of pay : 1. Member of the House of Representatives from Abbeville, and chairman of the d?l?gation, pay $6 a day and mileage. 2. County School Commissioner, pay $4 a day and mileage. 8. Tho papers speak in the most glowing terms of ?ho excellence of her stylo of reading, and a comraittoo of influ? ential citizens have insisted upon hor giving a second reading in Augusta, which sho has con? sented to do to night. M.; and leave Mount Pleasant at eight and half past eleven A. M. and eix P. M. They will leave tho city for Sullivan's island at ten A. M. three and half-past six P. M., and leave the Island at half-past seven and eleven A. M. and half-past five P. M. for tho city. Tho Fire Department and their visiting friends will be carried back and forth for ono fare. PERSONAL.-It is stated that Mr. ?. Odell Duncan, of South Carolina, who has been nom? inated and confirmed as United States Conant to Elsinore, Denmark, will not accept the posi? tion, "believing that bia record and the recom? mendations of Senator Sumter and of leading men in our consular service entitled him to a better position." G* Mackey was much talked of for a mission abroad, and at one time the mission to Portu? gal was almost promised to him. But he relax? ed bis efforts, deciding c n the whole that he preferred to remain in South Carolina. He will doubtless retain his present position." E. D. Woodruff, Jr., Esq., one of the dole gates of the Pniladelphia Fire Department, has reached the city and is at the Charleston Hotel. Thomas L. Cuthbert, the Naval Officer at this port, bbs tendered to the Seoretary of the Treasury his lotter of resignation, to take effect on the first proximo. ARRIVAL OF THE VISITING FIREMEN. - To day, at 8 P. M. the members of tho German, Phoe? nix and Washington Fire Companies, will as? semble at their houses for the purpose of forming a common receptiou party to groot, the visiting firemen. The Germana will assemble at their house in Chalmers-street,1 and under the lead of Muller's Brass Band, will proceed to the house of the Phoenix, form company with thom, and thence to the Washington house, where they will be joinod by that com? pany, when all will march to the railroad depot and receive the visitors. On their return, they will leave the different companies with their guests at their respective houses and finally disperse at the German's headquarters. The Stonewall will aLo asse nble at 1 P. M. to receive their guests, the Winyah's, from Georgetown. ? THE ARTESIAN WELL,-Something more than truth must lie at the bottom of the Charleston Artesian Well, for if wo may credit the tales of travellers who have visited us during the last four months, its waters are more valuable than the Seltzer,the Vichy, the Congress or any other waters whioh have acquired a national reputa? tion. Tho taste is'slightly saline and alkaline, bett when iced no unpleasant fl ivor can be detected. For bathing purposes, the artesian well water is unequalled, and ifHhe well were only in au out of the way place, instead of in the maur street of Charleston, ii would soon be known and sought after in every corner of the United States, from Alaska to tho Keys of Florida. A careful analysis of the water was made some months ago by Pro? fessor C. U. Shepard. This showed the amount of solid ingredients to be 0.284 nor cent. In 100 parts tbe solid ingredients were : Bicarbo nato of soda 52.71, and chloride of sodium 47.06, the remainder 0.20 being made up of bi? carbonates of lime aud magnesia, silica, ir >n, lime and alumina phosphates, &c. In 100 gal? lons of the water there would be 1} pounds bi? carbonate of soda and ll pounds common salt. It is hoped that an effort will be made to show this well to the publio at its true value. We should make the best of all our advantages. THE ORPHANS' ENTERTAINMENT TO-NIGHT. The entertainment for the benefit of the Ca? tholic Male Orphan Asjlum, under charge of the Sisters bf Mercy, opens to-night at Schachte's Hall, at the corner of King and Vanderhorst streets. Every preparation bas been made to make the Hall an attractive re? sort, and the firemen of oar city and for the visiting companies there will be no pleasanter place at which to spend an evening. An.cmg the prizes there ia a Uno ailver trumpet, which is to be given to the fire company whioh re? ceives the largest cumber of votes. There is a shooting gallery which may be made both amusing and' profitable, and the El Dorado;, table, where :there are all prizes and no blanks. The .fancy tables are prettily arranged and1 well filled, and, last of all, though not least, is the eating saloon, where the visitor may. for a mere song, be re? freshed, and dispel the cares of the day. The ball is said to be admirably adapted to the purpose for whioh it baa been bhoeen, and when filled with thc friends bf th? orphan dni? ren will be as happy a spot as can be found under the sun. The object of tho entertain? ment is a most praiseworthy one. There should be no difficulty in crowding the hall every night; for the orphans have the whole city as their friends, and have never yet called for aid in vain. This time the firemen must again loud them a helping hand. THE LADIES' INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION or CO? LUMBIA.-This Association was organized in November, 1866, for .the purpose of relieving persona who bad been reduced' to poverty by the war. It was desired to give not amis, but employment to this large end suffering class, and during the yefti ending November, 1867, the Association supplied eighty persons weekly with work and paid,out $1200. The Associa? tion has, however, been fighting hard with ad? versity for many months,, so much so, that the board of managers now come before the publio and ask that assistance whioh will enable them to put their society upon a permanent footing, and to extend the sphere of its usefulness. For this purpose a eoir-se will bo wold br Co? lumbia on Wednesday and Thursday next, the patronage of the delegates to the Agri? cultural Convention and of all strangers being earnestly solicited. To all who may be in ' tho Capital of the State at the lime this will bo invitation enough; bot there are hundreds of others who will not be there, and who can contribute something to the necessities of the society. THE AUGUSTA COYS. -The Augusta ChroDi clo and Sentinel, of Saturday, speaking of our approaching firemen's parade, says: "Tue fol? lowing companios will attend from Augusta: Tho 'Georgia' Fire Company Cst earner,) an.I I and tho 'Washington' Fire Company, No. 1, (hand engine.) On yesterday a letter was re? ceived from Charleston by tho 'Georgia' ask? ing tho members of that company to send down their steamer on Sunday, so that the la? dies of Charleston would have all day Monday to dress it with flowers. In aocordanoe v Ith this request the steam3r will leave for Charlea-' ton on to-morrow morning in charge of a com? mittee of the company, consisting of J. M. Mc? Laughlin and Thomas W. Henry, Lieutenants; Jahn F. Keon, Engineer, and Jordan Bot? toms. Tho remaining membsrs of tho 'Geor? gia' and the members of the 'Washington' will leavo this city on Monday morning. The former will be the guest ol' tho 'Pheonix' Fire Company in Charleston and the latter of tho .German.' These two companies will bo join? ed afc Branchville by tho 'Palmetto' of Colum? bia, which will be the guest of tho Charleston company of the same name." ARRIVAL OF THE STEAM FIRE ENGINE "GEOR? GIA.-The steam Are eugine Georgia arrived yesterday afternoon, by the South Carolina Railroad, from Augusta, under the charge of a delegation consisting of Messrs. Jamos Mc? Laughlin, chairman; J. F. Kean, engineer, and J. B. Bottom, J. J. Cohen, H. M. Levy, F. B. McCoy, iW. Finch, S. Saling; and Tom Hall, colored watingman. As soon as the platform oar containing tho steamer approaohed the Line-street depot, "three hearty cheers for the Georgia boys" filled the air. The delegation from the Pheonix, the hosts of the visiting company, soon mounted tho car and exchang? ed friendly greetings. In a few moments the oar moved ou to Ann-street, where tho Georgia was lowered ou skids, and soon after her ropes were manned by-the-Pheonix delegation, the Georgia delegation rotinng to tho sidewalk, and the engine was drawn down Ann to Meot ing-stroofc, thence to the houso of the Phoenix in Cumberland-stfoot, where the hosts served up a "punch on the" hoae," and the dusty and travel-worn visitors were duly refreshed. The Georgia waa fully described in THE NEWS when she passed through the city some time ago. The. Georgia does not bring her reel, in consequence of it having sustained an injury hi Augusta. When the rest of the company arrive this afternoon they will make up a com? plement of forty members, and will be received by the Pheonix boys with becoming spirit, j A DISGRACEFUL AFFRAY took place on Satur? day afternoon in a boase of ill-repute in Mar? ket-street, adjoining Charlotte Range. Three officers of the United States army, whose names the police authorities yesterday professed themselves unable to give, were in the house and under the influence of liquor, when an al? tercation took place between them and Mr. George. Chapman. A pistol waa drawn by one of the army officers and fired twice, one of the shots wounding a lieutenant (name unknown) in tho fleshy part of the arm. It is supposed - that the pistol was fired at Chapman, who ebon afterwards had made^himself master of the situation. Tho row was growing still more serious, and Fanny Cochran, one of the inmates of the house, had beeu struck in the face and badly bruised, wheo two policemen came np, and by their coolness and determination quell? ed the disturb ance and carried the three offi? cers, Chapman and the woman to the Guard? house. The affair or ea ted the greatest excitement on King, jileo ting and Market-streets, arid a large crowd gathered around the house during the fight, and afterwards followed the arrested parties to tho Guardhouse, On their arrival at the latter point the offence of the officers was further aggravated by a wanton assault on one of the policemen on duty at the door. ' For some reason as yet unexplained, the three officers wore permitted to depart, and the other parties, who, if anything, seem to have been leas in fault, Were retained in cus? tody.
