holiday on the occasion of the annual parade.

THE BATTEBY.-A force of laborers was en?
gaged yesterday in putting this favorite resort
in something Uko decent order. But the weeds
and overgrowth are not tho only marring fea?

ly need repair. In several places there are boles,
which after every rain fill up and render the
way impassable. In this age of improvement'
something surely should be done to prevent,

his serious indisposition:' His physicians
think that he will be able to participate in the
grand fireman's parade at Charleston on the
27fch. It is understood that he will represent
the beauty of Augusta on the occasion. He
will roach hero on Tuesday morning.

HIGH ScHoaL.-At a meeting of the Bouid
?ot Supervisors, held yesterday afternoon at
?the Mayor'd office, Mr. Virgil C. Dibble was
unanimously elected first assistant teacher.
Mr. Dibble has been a zealous, painstaking
And sucosssfnl teacher. His promotion is a
Ample act of justice gratefully rendered by
the board... As much to his surprise as gratifi?
cation, for. Bibble was yesterday presented'
by the pupils of bis department with a very
handsome set of gold studs. Action on the
subject of electing other assistant teachers
was postponed until Friday next, at five P. M.
Mr. W. lt. Kiugraan waa unanimously elected,
secretary of the board.
ANNUAL PICNIC OF ST. JOHN'S LU .THERAN
SUNDAY SCHOOL-This interesting event came
off yesterday, and was a complete success. At
about nine o'clock a speoial train, heavily
freighted with tho children 'and their friends,
moved from tho Northeastern Railroad depot,
bound for Porcher's farm, some fiteen miles
from the city. The entire party, children and
adults, numbered between four and five hun?
dred, and amused themselves after a. manner
which wa? a* entirely satisfactory as it was
decorous. We observed upon the grounds the
venerable and esteemed pastor of the church,
?he Rev. Dr. Eachman, and also bis able junior
and asaooiate, the Rev. W. W. Hioks. Towards
sunset the happy party returned. Teachers
and scholars alike deserve congratulations
for the successful result of this pleasant field
inspection and review of thia large corps of
that grand body, the Sunday School army.

ing made two trips, and about to engage in a
third attempt. She has taken men and am
munition, ?nd reporta no difficulty in landing,
provided proper vigilance ls exercised to
- avoid the Spanish war vessels.

Tho Union League, at its last meeting, tried
Daddy Cain on the charge of doubtful fealty,
and acquitted bim. DeLarge was to have boen
arraigned, but Cain's acquittal quashed the
indictment.

last a seamen, belonging to tho schooner An?
nie E. Glover, lying at Brown's wharf, discov?
ered a long black object floating along the
bead of the dock, wbilo directly in its rear Were
several smaller ones following at a rapid pace.
Boing unable to determine their character, he
procured a boat and went m hot pursuit, when
he ascertained tho object of bis curiosity to be
a large female mink, with eight or niuo young
ones, trying their Utmost to. koop up with thc
mother. He succeeded in capturing a younis
one, and yesterday had it aboard of the vessel.
It is about tho size of a small lap dog, and ap.
parently several weeks old, and bas long shari
teeth. Several persons made attempts to cap
ture the mother but failed, and only cangb
some of the young. Those that wore left witl

and could not be found.

gathering of ship news-two regular marin
editors, and tho special writer or "Shipping
Notes," and is certainly entitled to the oredi
of being beyond rivalry as a nows gatherer.
THE SEA ENTBANCE TO CHABLEHTON.- Th
main requisites of a prominent seaport is i
sufficient expanse of deep water well protects;
by the land, to accommodate and kt ep afloat i
numerous fleet of ships, anda sufficient deptl
of water leading to the sea to enable vessels ti
pass with facility. In the former requisit
Charleston is admirably located, having fo
miles around her a depth of five, six and sevei
fathoms, where the fleets of the world migh
ride. Her sea., entrance, however, has heel
considered somewhat contracted,.and for vorj
heavy ships it stands as an obstacle. Th?
Pumpkin Hill Channel, at present need, wil
permit a passage, at fair tides, of seventeen tc
eighteen feet, and even eighteen and t
