DUST AND BAIN.-There was a slight fall of
rain yesterday, which laid the dust in the
streets, much to tho joy of those wbo have had
to encounter its blinding clouds. Considerable
rain is yot wanted to fill the cisterns, which
are generally empty.
FIREMAN'S FAIR.-Tho ladies of Sumter in?
tend giving a fair about tho Sd of May for the
benefit of tho fire department of that town,
which has just been thoroughly organized, and
which has purchased a ntw engine The fair
promises to be quite a success.
THE GERMAN OPERA, much i m proved and
strengthened sinco its lost visit io Charleston,
opens to-night at Hibernian Hall. The opera
.chosen for the occasion is Faust, always a fa?
vorite with the Charleston public. Reserved
seats may bo had this morning at Holmes'
book house._
ROBBERY OF TOBACCO.-Mr. Meyers, who
keeps a store in Calbouu-street, on or about
thc 1st of April lost a quantity of loaf tobacco
from his establishment. Suspicion having -
pointed strongly to Edward Middleton, colored,
he was arrested yesterday by Officers Reed and
Nipson, and is now held on the charge for ex?
amination.
THE CHESTER Hoa.-A fine specimen of this
breed of hogs passed through tho city yester?
day tor Mr. William Knox, of Selma, Ala.
Tbe porker in question was weighty and of
good sizo. Quito a number of this breed have
passed through our city of late, indicating that
some attention is being given to this branch
of stock-raising.
THE STATE LAND COOMISSIONER.-Mr. C. P.
Leslie, recently appointed Land Commissioner
for thc Stale of South Carolina, in pursuance of
law, filed bis bond yesterday, qualified and en?

office. The office will be opened forthwith at
Columbia, S. C. All official communications
relative to Ibo sale or purchase of lands may
be addressed to C. P. Leslie, Land Commis?
sioner, Columbia, S. C.
ROSIN.-It was reported a few days since
that a salo of rosin had been made in this city
at $9, "ibe highest price since the war." This
is a mistake, as rosin has been sold in th's
market at $12 per barrel of two hundred and
eighty pounds. Charleston is as good a mar?
ket for naval stores as any in the country, and
as good prices can be bad as at any other point.
Indeed, low grades of rosin have, within the
last four months, been shipped from Wilming?
ton to Charleston for sale.
RAMIE.-A fresh supply of the roots of this
new textile has been received in this city, and
Mr. R. J. Pearce advertises them for sale in ano?
ther oolumn of to-day's NEWS. We confidently
hope to see the ramie soon occupy its deserv?
edly important position as one of the staple
productions of the South. The simplicity of
its cuitare, the certainty of the crop, and bigb
prices offered for the product, will, we think,
induoe many ot' our planters and farmers to en?
gage in its cultivation.
THE UNITED STATES COURT, APRIL 20.-HON.
GEO. S. BRYAN, PRESIDING.-Robert D. White,
Andrew J. Evana and Alex. R. Knox were final?

May why be should not be declared a bank?

dry petitions on matters pertaining to bank?
ruptcy, were all disposed of.
In the Circuit Court-Nathan Williams,
Esq., of Chester, S. C., was admitted to prac?
tice in the United States Courts of the State.
THE APPROACHING FIREMEN'S ANNIVERSARY

delphia; Mr. W. It. Porter, Treasurer Mechan?
ics' Engine Company; and Mr. Henry Hoff,

THE STATE MEDICAL ASOCIATION.-A moot?
ing of this association, with a view to its reor?
ganization, will be held on the 20th May, and
from tho" interest already shown in tho matter
by the niembois of tho medical profession
throughout the Stato, there is litHo doubt that
it will be pot upon a sound and permanent
basis. Tbe association will be of great valuo
to the profession and will place South Carolina
in this particular on a footing with her sister
Slate?. Tho following is tho circular calling
