FOWL THIEF.-Preston Johnson, colored, was sent to the House of Correction yesterday for sixty . days for robbing a fowl roost, No. 43 St. Philip-street SLY THIEF.-Daniel Cox, colored, who prac? ticed a sleight of hand trick at thc Archer Bazaar, and stolo therefrom a lot or hosiery, was arrested, and yesterday wont up for sixty days. THE DROWNED BODY, which was found in the dock near Unhn Wharf, on Saturday, was identified as that of an Orphau House boy. The Commission? ers took charge of the remains for interment. OBTAINING MONEY FALSELY.-Henry Styer, who represented himself as being a detective, whereby ho mulcted H. Thiellng, grocer, America street, out of some money, was fined $20 for his fraud. __ ABDUCTION.-John Ches ont, colored, was ar? rested yesterday lor inducing a young colored ?iri ? to leave her home. The girl has been missing sino>> the 12th instant, and Chesnut refuses to tell where she is hi J._ FIRE.-The alarm which occurred at five -o'clock yesterday morning, was caused by a fire at the grocery store of Mr. Habernicht, No. 21 Tradd street. The Emily will receive freight and leave to-morrow at eight o'clock; also, for Edisto on Wednesday, the 28th, at eight A. M., leaving Edisto on thc 29.h at nino.o'ciock. BECETVING STOLEN GOODS.-H. Bein mann was brought up yesterday on a charge of rooeiviDg stolen gooda from Daniel Cox, who purloined the hosiery from Archer's Bazaar. He was turned over to a magistrate for prosecution. The thieves carried off a lot of clothing and a pistol, but were frightened away by the arrival of members of the family, wk o saw negroes jump from the piazza. A Columbia correspondent of the New York Tribune says: "The official mortuary reports of the City of Charleston gives us 1208 as the number of deaths during 1863. Of these 1208 there were 818 colored and 390 white. Now, as the population of the city (40,090) ia about evenly divide!-half white and half .colored-it appears that the deaths are over four per cent, a year of the colored race, while of the white it is less than two per cent. More exactly, one colored person in every Iwenty-four dies yearly; while of the whites, only one in every fifty-one dies yearly. Thts ratio may be safely assumed as applicable all over the State." THE UNITED STATES COURT, APRIL 19-HON. GEOEOE S. BBYAN, PRESIDING -A number of ap? plications for discharge in bankruptcy were referred to the Registrar; also, petitions to establish liens. Moses Brayden was finally discharged. Reuben S. Holmes petitioned for voluntary bankruptcy, and was referred to Registrar. Th* petition of G. H. Sass, Esq., to be allowed counsel iee. was referred to Registrar Carpenter for hearing. In the Circuit Court the Judge called the issue docket for the purpose of sounding the same, and gave notice thai a peremptory call would be had on Thursday, at 12 M. Frederick H. Gantt was admit? ted, on petition, to practice in the District and Cir ?ult Courts. The jury was discharged until Thurs? day. THE PROVINCIAL COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE. This ecclesiastical body will convene on Sunday, the 25th of April. The distinguished Primate, the Most Reverend Martin John Spalding, D. THE WEATHER IN FLORIDA_Tho following ore extracts from letters ?ccelved by a commission boure in this city. The first comos to us frcin Ben? ton, Columbia County. Fla., under date of tbo 14th. We make the following extract : The recent cold weather has materially Injured our young cotton. I had about one-half ot my crop killed outrlRht, and a Rood deal that I did not think was hurt has died since, and last uight it wa? so cold that it will cause a Rreat deal more to die. 8eed is very scarce, so much so that some will not bo able to plant again. Another correspondent, writing from Jacksonville, Fla., under date ol the 17th, says: Wo bad a frost this week, which, with the cold weather, has killed a good deal of tho new crop, causing many to replant. LAUDS III THE STATE.-A Columbia corres? pondent of the New York Tribuno says: "Lands vary in pi io?, and the prices range from fifty cents to$15; that ie, common and good lands. A gentle? man in Horry County offers 15,000 acres at prices making seventy-five cents the average. This is poor land, however. About Aiken, famed for its health, ther? ar? hundreds of arrrn, in lots of various sizes, offered now for sale at $2 an acre; far more at $3; and from these figures tho prices range hardly even as high as$10 tor good lands. Ia Ooonee (Pickens) County the price of mountain lands is from S3 to $10, and I have Been four hundred bushels of potatoes, and a crop of beans besides, grown on one acre. The prices ol lands, however, are thirty per cent, higher than they were a year ago, and are still look? ing up." _ AN INTERESTING QUESTION was argued in tho United States Court yesterday, in the matter cf A. T. Stewart & Co. vs. L. Drucker. ?t arose upon the re? turn of A. T. ?towart A Co., to a iule to show cause why lurther proceedings should not be stayed until tho question of discharge of the bankrupt was deter? mined. It was contended by Messrs. Pressley, Lord A Inglosby, counsel for Messrs. Stewart A Co., that inasmuch as a discharge might be no release of their debt, they bad the right to go and prove such tacts. M *. Apher D. Cohen, counsel for Mr. L. Drucker, argued that whether the discharge released the debt or not, their claim waa provable, and all action thereon must be stayed until discharge waa or was not granted. Alter that had been decided, whether their debt was discharged or not could come up when the case was regularly called. Thc judgment of the court was reserved. f REPORTERS* CRUVBS.-The Bennettsville Journal publishes the opinion of Judge Rutland, pronounced on tho fift:enth instant, declaring the homestead Uw unconstitutional. Edward Moran, an escaped lunatic, was taken up yesterday and returned to proper custody. The Orphan Hou?e children will go on a picnic on tho 29th, at Porcher's farm, on the line of the North? eastern Railroad. There was considerable talk yesterday about nom? inations to the F?lerai offices in this city. Rumor has it that there are a number of candidates for the gurveyorship of Customs, made vacant by the with? drawal of C. C. Nell. There was a meeting of gentlemen at the Charles? ton Botel last evening for the purpose of arranging for the readings of Mrs. O' Donovan Rosa. Thc dust in Rutledge avenue would be intelorable but thnt the street cars carry off a ton or two eaoh trip and distribute it, free of charge, over the coats and dresses of the passengers. The anniversary celebration of the German Church Sabbath School will take place on the 21st Instant The'eighth soiree of the Bruderlicher Bund will take place on the 21st instant. LA GRANDE DUCHESSE.-Offenbach's famous Opera Bouffe was performed last night at the Hiber? nian Hall, by Whitman's company, and went off very well. Mr. Pike as Fritz played and sang with spirit, and Mrs. Taylor us Prince Paul made the best of a part which depends altogether for its success on tho peculiar humor of the actor. Mr. Taylor as Bourn was as grand a roysterer as ever. He is a fine burlesque actor. Miss Kimball as La Grande Ducheue sang and acted charmingly and without any suggestion of the coarseness of which Tostee appeared to be so fond. DUe.t Lui waa sung by Miss Kimball with expression and taste, also the piquant c'?tait un de mes aieux. The sword song Void le sabre was very successful, and Prince Paul's song La Voici ct que l'on au ae moi, a bit of quaint and pleas? ing melody, was given with good effect. The acting was bright and quick throughout, and, the opeia, a? it is now played, is free from a'l objection. Miss Kimball confirmed the good opinion which had been formed of her on the previous evening, and is evidently a singer and actress of great merit. La Petite Corinne waa loudly applauded. This evening we are to have Cinderella, which attracted immense houses, composed of the elite and fashion, in New York and Boston. This is consider? ed one of the best dramatic representations (as per? formed by the Whitman troupe) ever given in this city. The house sLould be crowded. BUSINESS NOTICES.
