TRIBUTE OF RESPECT.-Yesterday the bells of St. Michael's Church were tolled in tribute to the memory of tho late Gene: al John t-chnierle, an ex Mayor of this city, who died at half-past nine in the forenoon. ROBBERT.-Philip Lewis, a small colored boy, was arrested yesterday for stealing twenty dollars in o orr ency irom Mr. 'J homas Bennett, the property of Mrs. Bennett Not being able to clear his skirts of the charge, he waa sent to the Bouse of Correc? tion for thirty days. CLOTHES THIIF.-Officer Nipson yesterday arrested Daniel Jones, a half-grown colored man, on the charge of stealing two children's coats and one doak from the res'dence of F G. DeFontaine, Esq., at the corner of Anson an i Hasel Stroits. Ho was held for lurttaer examination. ACCIDENT.-On tho day bofore yesterday, Mr. Pemberton, of the house of G. W Williams k Co , Hayne-s rest, met with a painful accident while riding through Anson-street JD ie horse fell, and before he could extricate it froai the stirrup, his foot was badly mashed. He is reduced to crutches for tho time being. THE COLUMBIA HOTEL.-This hotel will be open forthe accommodation of tho delegates to tho Railroad Convention, which meets in Columbia on the 20thinstant, aa woll as for the delegates to tbe Agricultural Convention, which meets on the 28th of this month. Every effort ls making to complete ar? rangements for a general opening at an oarly day. THE AUTOMATIC GAS .MACHINE.-The Auto? matic Gas ila-hine Company, of Boston, aro about shipping to this etty one of their machines lor trial. If it proves to be successful ss a cheap substitute for the gas now in use, many w ill no donbt adopt it. FOB A STEADY PLACE I- How frequently this exclamation escapes the Ups of colored persons on the Btreets, empec? dry women, who stroll about all day from "pillar to, post" Ihe truth is, that many of them have bad " steady places." and have either left th.im for no good reason but badness, or ha vs been dismissed for incompetency and inattention to duty. Third. It is charged that the Mayor "audits hi? own accounts, and, as Ma.or, draws his checks upon ibo city treasury to pay thom. ' This brings me to ihe root of tho wh lo question, which is whether'tho ctyls paying loo much for what it buys, and whothcr the persons who sell to the city are en? abled by their official position ?/> f-pr?v<? their own accounts and pay themselves tue money. All accounts against the city aro submitted to and examined by the Commlttoa on Accounts, whiob committee approves the acoouo elf they are found to be correct. Th? accounts ara then retorted to Coun:il.and if approved by that body arcpa'd by the Treasurer. It lstbo Committee ou Accounts which determines whether too much is paid to - spikes and whiskoy, or a drzen ancient eggs ; and I acree with "A Citizen" that it would be n violation of public ' decency for tho Mayor to bo tho whole of that com? mittee. But he is not the whole of the committee, nor the half of it. nor oven the chairman ot it. 1 ho committee is compose! of three members : Alder? man H. B. Olney, chah man, Aide: min W. G, W bil? den and Mayor Clark. Mr. Olnoy ai d Mr. Whildtn, two of our own Citizen?, determine what shall be paid and what shall cot. Mayor Clark has but ono vole in three. This, to my mind, disposes of tho whole charge. I sm willing to trugt mvp to, erty in the banda of Aldermen O.ney arfd Wnildoti, and I believe that ninety-nine of every hundred taxpayers in the city aro willing to do tho same. As to what **A Ci lz .n" says about the Arting Al? dermen ai pplj lng thc city with lumber and limo, and bric'.,, I reply that the Aldermen havo tho right to sell material to thu city that I h; ve. rr "A Citi? zen" has. They do not lose their rights-as mer? chants because they are Aldermen. 1 hey have the perfect right to fell ?hat they please to ttie city, if they do not charge more iban tho mu kel price, and thc Committee on Accounts will seo to that.
