Impresario Grau, is on UH way hither and will open,

in this city report that tho unfavorable weather in
thc North has caused the market for early vegetable?

ARRESTED ON SUSPICION.-Mr. Moffett, who
resides at No. 10 Leg ro street, had his trunk broken
open day before yoateiday, and $38 in currency
taken thorelrom. Officer Keed was put in charlo of
the case, and arrested a colored mm, to whom sus?
picion points strongly. Bis name is withheld for
the present.
THE NEW HOTEL IN COLUMBIA.-Tho steamer
Manhattan brough I yesterday a mammoth range o<
French patout, which cost 5853, besides carpets,
crockery and furniture, lor the new hotel in Colum?
bia, whioh will bo oponed on the 28th instant, but
only for the delegate* to the Agricultural Couvcn

DR. WHITEFOOUD SMITH'S LECTURE.-There
was a very largo audience in Trinity Church last
evening to listen to the eloquent lecture delivered
by thia distinguished divine, who, in tracing *' 1 be

ASSAULT WITH BRICKBATS-Prince Maxwell,
a colored boy between sixteen and seventeen years
old, was committed te jail yesterday by Magistrate
Mackey, for assaulting Nanjy Hammond, a colored
girl about eighteen years of age, with brickbats and
knocking her senseless Had lt not been for tbs In?
terference of a bystander, ahe would have been
seriously Injured. As it was, shs received a sever?
wound on the head.

shows twenty-two deaths, of whioh thirteen were
colored. Tnere is a larger numbat of deaths under

sixty, and one between eighty and ninety. There is

the trains*, to gratify a morbid curiosity to gate at

I desire to present a few facts of publia in?
terest in regard to George W. Clark, late army sut?
ler, and now Act lng Mayor of Charleston. They
will serve to illustrate tbe art of publio plunder, and
explain, in some measure, why tbe city government
requires seven hundred and ten thousand dollars to
meei the expenditures of the city for the current
year.
> The Acting Mayor recently sold to the city all the
spikes used in the plank road, at olght dollars per
keg, when their prise, in open market, was BIX
dollars per keg. He Is the purveyor for all the city
iostitutiosB. furnishing, fvom hts store, all the
meal, flour, bacon, salt, oil, liquors, Ac.
These articles are paid for by the city at rates far
above those charged by ordinary dealers, although
of the most inferior quality. The shipmasters st
thia port reported to a high government offlolal, t bat
the food issued to tbe patients at our Marine Hospi?
tal was inferior and unwholesome. An investigation
was made, and tbe flour, meal and meat were found
to be utterly unmerchantable and unsound. It was
shown by tb* physician of the Marine Hospital, that
these articles were purchased from the Acting
Mayor, the city, of courte, paying the highest prices
for them.
The Acting Mayor recently had his premiaes on
Calhoun-?treet tlnno i and whitewashed, and the
woikmen were all paid by tbs etty. He and hi? co?
partners have absorbed ali the etty contract?, like a
huge sponge. One of the leting Aldermen tarnishes
all the lumber, another the lime, and another the
brick ; while the Anting Mayor, who ls a universal
genius, sells a little of everything to the olly, from s
barrel ef flour to a dosen ancient and unmerchant?
able eggs. Is lt not a violation of law and public
decency that the Mayor o.* th's city should be at the
.ams time Its ohief purveyor ?
He le ess officie the guardian of the fond? of the
city, and should be "above suspicion ;" yet this man,
as a member of th* Oomndttee on Accounts, audits
his own account*, and aa M?yor draws hfs checks
upon the city treasury to pay them. Ko wonder that
his "regard for Hw" will not permit bim to vacate
bis seat on the demand of the Republican Mayor
