AesAULT WITH BRICKBATS.-Prince Maxwell,
a colored boy between sixteen and seventeen years
old, was committed te jail yesterday by Magistrate
Mackey, for assaulting Nan -y Hammoud, a colored
girl about eighteen years of aga, with biickbats and
knocking her senseless. Hod ii not been for the in?
terference of a bystander, she would have been
seriously injured. As it was, she received a se7era
wound on the heal.

Signor Briguoli sang as only a thorough artist can
sing, using his noble voice with consummate skill,

Signor Petrilli, who on tho previous evening bad
shown himself to be a thoughtful actor, was thorough,
ly at home as Figaro. Tho versatile Barber laughed
and sang, and jested and intrigued, fairly twinkling

with a force and yet with a rapidity of ennnciatlou
which few can equal. Figaro seem* to bo the favorite
role of Signor Petr, lb, and iu none, so far as wo knott,

explain, in some measure, why tho city government
requires seven hundred and ten thousand dollars to
meei the expenditures of the city lor the current
year.
The Acting Mayor reo-nfly 6old to thc city all thc
spike, used in the plank road, at eight dollars per
keg. when thoir p'ice, in open market, was six
dollars per keg. He is tho purveyor lor all the ctty
institutions, lura slung, Iran his store, all thc
meal, flou*, bacon, salt, oil, liquors, i.e.
These articles are paid lor by th', city at rates far
above thoso chirped by ordinary dea ers, a'tbough
of the most interior quality. Iho shipmasters at
this port roported to a high government official,. bat
the food issued to the patients at our Marine Hospi?
tal was iaforior and unwholesome. An investigation
was made, and the flour, meal Sad moat wero lound
to be utterly unmerchantable and uusound. It was
shown by the phy-iciau of thc Marine Hospital, that
the:0 article- wero purchased from tho Acting
Major, the city, of ourse, paying tho hijhest prices
for them.
Tbe Acting Mayor recently had his premises ou
Calhoun-stre-.t Hntio I and whitewashed, and tho
wotkmen wore all paid by tho city. He and his co
pirtners have absorbed all the city contracts, like a
huge sponge. One of the \cting Aid Tnion furnishes
all the lumber, another the lime, and another the
brick ; while tho Acling Mayor, who is a universal
genius, sells a little ot everyihing to the city, from a
barrel of Sour to a dozen ancient and unmerchant?
able eggs. Is it not a violation of law and public
decency that the Mayor o." th s city should be at the
same time its chief purveyor ? <
Ho is ex o?ci? the guardian of the funds of the
eily, and should be ..above suspicion;" yet this man,
as a member of the Comm ittee on accounts, audits
his own account-, and as Miyor draws his checks
upon the city treasury to pay them. No wonder that
his "regard for law" will not permit bim to vacate
his seat on thu demand of the Republican Mayor
