Sudden conversions are sometimes both
lasting and sincere; but it wi M be long ere
the South hus any faith in the new born
love and gushing admiration of John W.
Forney. N
This person was our bitter and unscru?
pulous enemy. The columns of his two
papers-the Washington Chronicle ' and
Philadelphia Press-were filled with slan?
der and abuse. Facts were garbled and
twisted in every conceivable way. Every
foible was magnified until it became a crime,
and every merit was, hidden out of sight.
The whole aim of "my two papers-both
"daily," was to spur on the Radicals to
greater excesses by declaring that a South?
ern man was a deeper dyed villain than
ever graced the scaffold, and that Southern
society was one sweltering mass of impu-'
rity and corruption. Each new enormity
received his cordial supp ort. Of every de?
fender of the law and the constitution he
was the implacable foe, and the profusion
of Billingsgate which year, after, y ear was
heaped on President Johnson is not all
forgotten. And yet within the last few
months Ferney has turned over a new
leaf, and now cannot say too muoh to cheer
and oonsols the South.
In a leading1 article, oue of many, which
lies before us, Forney says that the South
will start next year upon the career of gen?
eral prosperity which is in store for 'her.
The superior intelligence, greater energy
and increased motives of interest of the
former slaveholders, will curry the whole
section forward and upward. The people
says Forney-have awakened from their
lethargy, their energies have been brought
into vigorous play, and they seam to work
under tho inspiring oonviotion that they have
a brilliant future before thom. Romantic
tendencies have been oast aside and the faois
of every day life taken up; Tho surplus
profits of the year will reach sixty or sey
.nty millions,.??and the extent of lev trage
"that such a sum Can afford ig past our
"powers of approximation, when placed in
"tho hands of a .people who are determined
"to succeed and willing to diligently work
"for success."
This is tho strain in which Forney writes
at this moment, and this is his picture of
eur futurs :
"But the inevitable result of this euooeas
"must be Southern independence of the
"North to a large extent, and this the North
"must expeot. The 8outh, under, the new
"order of things, will soon manufacture for
"herself. She will ?Iso out loose from
"Northern ports, and establish direct steam
.?iuteroourse with Europe for herself. Even
"now this has been done to a great extent,
"sufficiently so to show what inoreased ef?
fort is capable of doing. We know that
"just as soon as the business of the emotion
"will call for and warrant the increase of
"the means of European communication,
"the necessary eapital will be forthcoming
"Let plenty ef cotton and breadstuffs ba
"produoed, let railroads multiply where
"they are needed, then steamship linea for
?.foreign ports, will follow, and the hum of
"busy factories will soon be heard in local
"ities where deep eilenoehas reigned; and
"the result of all these will be,over running
"prosperity. This is no exaggerated pio
"ture. The signs of the times are sigaifi
"cant; and there is a deep prophecy in
"some of the changes now going on that
"most bf us will live to see fulfilled in the
"bright future of one seo ti on, destined to
"shed a benefit over all others embraced
"within the national domain. Let the
?Southern people be not disoourrged by
.'any temporary drawbaok. Patience, per
"severance, well directed industry and
! "time-theBO ?re age noies which, when
"combined, no drawbaok eau withstand."
This ls nd more than the truth, whatever
the source whence it oomes, and ii l? sig?
nificant in this instance, beoause it proves
I that Forney is convinced that more is to be
made by praising than by abusing the
South. The profits of his land agency are
more to him than any abstract idea. What
he desires is to be on the strong side, be?
oause it ia the strong side whioh controle
the almighty dollar. j And we need no more
satisfactory evidence that the shrewd
Northern Radicals begin totee in the South
ern sky the harbinger? of an unexampled
prosperity, than is found in the oircum
stance that the moat thorough and persis?
tent of them all paints all things a roseate
hue, and predicts for the whole South ? bril?
liant and happy future.
We ?are but little what Forney's notions
maybe. We have BO fear that he wilt
throw duet in the eyes of our people. All
that eonoerna us ia the fact that, for ?nee,
what he saya ia true, ?nd that our goal ie
and shall be Southern commercial iud?
pendeno?. Whether he ia guided by self
interest or unmixed philanthropy, Forney
is helping us on. The gio wing worde whien
he utters will be heard where our voioes
could not reach. They will aid in convert?
ing the North from its pet theory that the
Southerner cannot and will net work, aud
they will go fer to convince the radieal Re?
publicans that hoaeety is, after all, the heat
policy, and that a nation whioh boaeto of
two thousand millions of debt cannot afford
to moko light of tho people who give to tho
country an annual golu vaiu? of moro than
two hundred million of dollars.
Forney, at last, is iu the right path. AH
he waa the forerunner of many of our mis?
fortunes, so muy be now be permitted to
tell glad tidings to our people.
