great obstacles in ita first inception, and tho most
unparalleled misfortunes in the few short yeare of
its exit-lonee, it now stands a monument to the wis?
dom of its founders, and a mighty benefit to tbe
people of the etty. Tbe sec rot of tbii has been A
strict regard to the character as well as the < flloiency
of the teachers, and a rigid enforcement of the dis?

Very eoon after the door of this Behool was
opened, visitors, principally buPeB, began to pour in,
and in a short time they, with the eoholoie, formed
as denne a throng as the building could bold. 1 ho
exercises wera opened by the leading of the Bible by
tbe Hon. C. G. Memminger, which was lollowed by
the united school repeating tho lord's Prayer, in a
musical, accurate ?rd reverential manner. A hymn
was t hen Bun*, alter which tho geographical exer?
cises were pone through, and then s chant, succeed?
ed by arithmetical exercises, in which the pupils
displayed singular proficiency. Tbescholara were
dismissed to their class-rooms, and in reaching them
they preserved an order which spoke highly tor their
disciplino. A moment was spent in viewing the ar?
tistic decorations in tbe main room. Festoons
of evergieens bung around tho pillars and
walls, where there were wreaths in whioh were ap?
propriate mottoes. Over the rostrum, retired come
what, beneath tho canopy of flowing garlands, was
the talismanic word, "Excelsior." Spanning the
entrance was the large motto, also of ceoar letters,
' 'By perseverance we overcome difficulties." In
similar characters on thenoith wall was "Labor con?
quers all things," and on the south wal), .?Knowledge
is power." ?he minor mottoes w?re : "Hasten
slowly;" "Strive to please and do it righi;" "Know
th yself. learn to wait;" ?Time is money;" "I will
try, I shall wait;" "Well began, better done," &c.
All of the other departments and rooms were also
decked with flowers, 6ome hav>rg moss baskets sus?
pended from the celling.
The prim li al of this school ls Miss Anna R.
SimoDton, who, with her competent corps ot assist?
ants, may well feel i rond of the pupils, who showed
a great proficiency in their ready responses. Divi
si on A delivered a French recitation in a oredltable
manner, and division B, LOHRIOIIOW'B touching po?
em of "The i-inl lng Ship." Ihe tongs, "Softly and
sweetly music shall flow" and "Hearts and Homes"
were happily rendered, while one of the teachers
presided at the piano, on either (ide of which was a
fine voiced echo ar to lead the masses. Drawings
illustrating mechanics, by Misses Adolphlne
E. Foin tel and Laura w. G. Kelly, were
almost faultless, and showed a knowledge of
physics, not generally possesed by BC bool girls
or even their seniors. Iho examination in the
various class-room* being satisfactorily completed,
t nero was a general apsembling in the main room
where the Hon. C. G. Memmmger. on behalf o- the
Board of Con missioners, read the list of prizes
Mr Memmmger took occasion to make a few re?
marks to the scholars, urging thom to diligent and
persistent efforts to acquire tho great b on, educa?
tion. He related the well known anecdote of Bruce
and the spider, and adapted its moral to the indus?
try which should characterize tlie pursuit of any aim
in life. He spoke of the gratitude the scholars
should feel for ihe educational advantages afforded
them, and paid a compliment to the teachers under
whose auspices so much progress had been made-a
progress that had not been surpassed in the school
in the same length of time.
TESTIMONIAL TO THE PBENOIPAX.
Thiough air. E. Montague Grimke. the Secretary
of the Board, the ecbolars presented the Principal,
Miss &lmonton, with a silver goblet and salver,
with her name inscribed on the latter. Mr. Grimke
in felicit?se terms made the presentation, and re?
ferred to the recipient's services in sentiments of the
highest encomium. Miss Simonton was so over?
come by surprise that she requested the Hon. Mr.
Memminger to respond for her, whioh fae did in his
terse and peculiarly graceful words, and said that
he hoped that the friendship and interest of the
pupils In the principal would endure even longer
than the metal of which the presents were made.
Ihis event closed the exercises, withs benidloUon by
the Bev. Mr. Pinckney, at the Normal school, and it
may be said that the examination of no previous
year gave greater satisfaction to the commissioners
and visitors.

ST PHI LIP-.STREET SCHOOL
Also hid a crowd of visitors, and was adorned, as
was the Normal t-cbooL :lhc exhibition of yester?
day proved incontestably that Mr. Archer, thc prin?
cipal, bad not spent the.time in fruitless endeavor to
inculcate his excellent discipline and thorough com
prehension of the Bclence of education; in testimony
cf which thc pupils gave the most ample proof
in their ready responses to questions propounded,
some really difficult, and In their strict attention to
his instructions. There were maps drawn on
the blackboards representing South America,
Africa, the F tate and harbor, by G. Herbert
Jones, of the first class, and North America,
and the hemispheres by Louis Bird, ol the see md
class, South Amenca by John Werner, and Africa by
George Scbifney, of the third class.

The Primary Departaent of this school was a
most interesting feature; there were upwards of six
hundred wee ihings congregated . there, orderly,
cleanly, and in their studies as read; as could be
expected. Their melodics with calisthenic accom?
paniment were in perfect unison. The motto of this
eo?ool which adorns the WJU of Mr. Arther's room,
was "No excellence without labor," done in arbor

MUCH-NEEDED PLANK ROAD COMPLETED. -
The Baltimore steamship lino, the Wando Fertilizer
V nnufactory, and the machine sheps of Messrs.
Jobn F. Taylor *t Co. have made the bend fot med by
Hasel, Concord and Piaokney-streets, a great tho
loughfaro. Being a great thoroughfare it bas also
become a gre it quagmire, almo.-d impassable to mad
Or beast. 1 his was not to be borne by the enter?
prising gsntlemon who oa ried on such an extensivo
business in that neighbor boo i, and they determined
that tbey would have those str.-ets planked. The
proper inflaenco was brought lo bear on the muni?
cipal authorities, and lbs consequenoo is that a sub?
stantial plank road has b .au laid from the corner of
East Bay and Hasel streets, through Hasel, Concoid
and Pinckney streets to the corner of East Bay and
Pinokney-streets. This greatly facilitates business,
and that vicinity is now no longer a terror to the
pedestrians and beasts of burden.
