Tho failure of Mr. Templeton's troupe to perform last, night was occasioned by the general sea-slcknesB of the actresses, the result of a storm at Bea, whioh they oxperionoed on their voyage from New York, They had a rehearsal yesterday after noon, however, and Mr. Templeton announces that they will perform this evening. r. EARLY VEGETABLES_Tho season for ship? ping vegetablo i from Charleston to the North has just begun, an l if our f inners have been wise and have planted largely for the Northern market, they will pooket a handsome amount ot money during the next two or tbrce months. The first shipment of green peas raised in the vicinity of Charleston was made yesterday by Mr. Willi im Hnnt, on the steamship charleston for New Tork. We are in? formed that this is the first shipment of the kind made in March for a number of years. THE SOUTH CA BOLINA INSTITUTE.-Tho Board of Directors of the South Carolina Institute meet this evening, at 7 o'clock, at No. 33 Broad-street, as we learn, to consider a proposal to build a hali, by a number of business mea and g mtlemen, on the lot where the old theatre stood, on Meeting-street, and whioh la owned by the Institute. Such a hall, aa it r is presumed will be erec ted irom this movement, ::, will not only be an ornament to that part of the city, 4 but for operatic and other public exhlDltlona, baa become a necessity to our community. It will, if undertaken, be managed by gentlemen of honor, position and experience. APPLETON'S JOURNAL.-We have received the first number of tbis new weekly journal, whioh is intended to be de vote a to popular current literature, the great interests of society, of popular science and of art In the first number we have the opening chapters of Viotor Hugo's new romance. L-homme qui rit, and several ?rneles upon special subjects. The journal is published weakly at SA per annum, by D. Appleton A Go., New York, and If we may judge by the modesty of Its promises, the neatness of its appearance and tbe bigh position of the firm whose name it bears, appleton's Journal will take a front place In the ranks of periodical literature. EXAMINATION, OF THE HIGH SCHOOL.-The interesting exercises of tbe High School examination were concluded yes orday, by tbe exam na iou of Mr. V. C. Libbie's department. The scholars show? ed high efficiency, the result of the intelligent and well directed instructions of this excellent teacher. Mr. Pengas examined the French class, and diversi? fied the entertainment by several interesting and humorous addresses in that language. Addresses were delivered by the following boys, all of whom did themselves and their teacher oredlt : Walter Whitehead, W. B. Chtaolm, P. e. DeSaussure, Arthur Bose, George Hunter, and The? odore Jervey. CHARLESTON RIFLEMEN ENTERTAINMENT. The Promenade Concert and Gift Entertainment of the Charleston Blflemen Society, inaugurated for Ute purpose of supplying the charity fund of the Society's exchequer, was opened last evening at the South Carolina Hall, Meeting-street. The ball ls plain but tastefully decorated with evergreens and white flowers. The grand gift fabio greets the visit? ors as they enter the door, and is laden with many raro and pretty articles. The refreshment table, to the left, is full of ihegjod thing? of tbis hfe, and presenta a tempting appearance. The Butaw Band discourses delightful music, and enables tho ladles and gentlemen gathered to thread the mazy dance to their heart's content. Tho Bessram of the Circuit Court of the United States commences on Monday next, probably at the Courthouse. M. H. Nathan, Ssq., Chief of the Fire Department, ls Investigating the recent fire at No. 629 King-street. Messrs. Leitch St Bruns sold SI 3,000 worth of city stock yesterday at sixty-four, and Gas Company stock at twenty-two. The detective office appurtenances will be remov? ed to the guardhouse to-day.
