CHAMBEE OF COMMERCE.-Wo havereoeived a neat pamphlet, printed at the Courier Job Omoe, containing the niles of the Chamber of Commerce, with the tariff of commissions and other regulations adopted by the Chamber, a hst of the offloers and members, and an index of the awards made under its sanction to March, 1868. This pamphlet ia pub? lished, we believe, by authority ef the Chamber. THE SCHOONER MONTROSE.-This fine schooner, which came into this pert aome tims since in a distressed condition, hound with a cargo of molasses from New Orleans for New York, after un? dergoing complete repairs and taking on board her cargo, was oleared yesterday by her agents, Messrs. J. A Enslow A Co., for ber port of destination. The Montrose now presents a fine appearance, and re? flects much credit upon those who had a band in fitting her up. Captain Knudson should be muob pleased with his tidy craft, and we wish bim a speedy and prosperous voyage. THE UNTIED SXATES COURT, MARCH 23. EON. Oxeaos S. ANOTHER HOTEL.-Both of our fine hotels, the Charleston and Pavilion, are crowded from base? ment to attic; numbers of persons have been turn? ed away, and have had to seek accommodation In private boarding houses, "and yet the crowd of strangers dr es not diminish. Cambell, Lieutenant of Police, was approved. Alderman Geddings, from the committee to whom the petition of Wm. Lebby and others was referred, reported it inexpedient to take any action on the said petition. Martin, counsel for L. J. Bar bot, Faq., was allowed ta read kia do tea ce before Council. ' The reading flnlahei, Alderman Olney moved that the reply of the late City Engineer he referred to tho Cox mit tee on Streets, to report at the next meeting, and they be requested to employ three competent perseus to re-measure the streets in question. Adopted. Alderman Voigt moved an amendment, that Mr. - Barbot be allowed to select one of the three, which was lost. Adjourned. A JUST CLAIM.-We understand that a num? ber of persons, in making their returns foi .state taxes, have included the amount of sharea of stock held by them in pabilo companies which themselves .re taxed upon their whole capital. The State is not entitled to tax the came property twice, and, aa the returns were made under a misapprehension of the law c lused by ita prolixity ?nd ambiguity, the persons assessed should be allowed to withdraw their returns and substitute correct ones to their stead. This ia a just- claim, and we presume that the County A?eeesor will make no difficulty about it. HOORAY FOB THE VELOCIPEDE.-Another of these wobbling, pirouetting, shin-scraping, coat, tall elevating inventions of cavorting genius, on which a mau can travel in any attitude, from a per pennie ular to a horizontal, at the rate of a mile a minute, reached the city yesterday, consigned to L, Chapia ft Go., Nos. SO and 39 Hayne-street Crowds gathered io see the extraordinary performances ol amateurs oh the two-wheeled monster, but it waa not until a gentleman from Mow York mounted the vehicle and went through the streets like the wind, that anybody believed the thing would go. The gentleman aforesaid pronounces it to be one of the beat and most, substantial he has ever tried. Our citizens can gratify their curiosity, by calling at Messrs. Chaplu A Oo.'s store, snd, if they wish, can invest then: greenbacks in the "last sensation." MONUMENTAL PAIR OF THE WASHINGTON LIOUT TITFAHTBT.-Tho fair of the Washington Light Infantry, tot the double purpose of increasing their charity fund and erecting a m nument to their dead who fell in the late war, is destined to be the grand? est event of the kind which bas ever iranapired in Charleston. The entire community have more or less of a personal interest m the undertaking, and it will, therefore, receive a warm support on all hands. The hall has already been engaged, and arrange? ments aro on foot to decorate it in tbe most t pion a ld manner. The ladies will put every garden undet contri bu? ion for flowers, and what with their tact and skill and pleasant faces, to say nothing of vulgar pecuniary help from masculine po drets, they will make a fairy scene beside which ''Whitman's great flfecon thousand dol'ar transformation" would ap? pear "of the earth, earthy." Forney's Washington Ohroniolo, of Monday, has the following: P. J. O'Connell, a member of the South Carolina Legislature, telegraphs to Hon. A. 8. Wallace, claim? ant to a aeat tn Congress in the Fourth District of that state, that h i rather was shot in tte street on Saturday, at Fort Mill, in York Couuty. The mur? der is attributed 'o politioal motives. The murder t r was, of course, allowed to escape. No particulars of the alleged murder have yet reached us; but we venture to say that tho state? ment, as far, at least, ns its political aspect is con? cerned, will turn out to bo a pure invention. THE BELL RING KR?.-The Peak and Berger families of bell ringers have the greatest combina? tion cf musical attractions that has ever been brought to Charleston. The belle, though beautiful as well as wonderful, form but a small p-irtion of their programme. Tho troupe consists of fourteen performers, all of whom play on the bells, and each of whom has a separate spacialty. Their por foi manees on their harps, cornets and violins must be heard to be appreciated, and ?heir vocal powers aie raro and charming. Their first performance wlil be given at Hibernian Hail to-night. Seats should be seoured early, as the bell ringers always draw crowded houses. REPORTERS' CRUMBS.-The repairs mention? ed in i ns NEWS, aonae time ago, contemplated in tho Guardhouse, have been completed. The main room ia divided by a partition, and the sergeant's office has boen railed eff ou'side of the Mayor's room, making lt convenient and accessible. With the Renerai doing up of the building the promises present a very improved appearance. Tho spring weather ls drawing a number of visi? tors to the battery, which by the way needs some re? pairs on the walk where the water settles after rain. The dividion of the county into townships will shortly begin, according to the maps lately before the Legislature. There was a paper read before Council last even? ing, which is m literary curiosity. It ref ara to hygi? enic matters. Tho Promptitude Colored Fire Company paraded yesterday, the occasion of the anniversary, present? ing a respeotablo appearance. 'There is a gem of a picture at Russell's, King, street, representing the Virgin and Child, dose by Mr. Caradue, of Aiken, 8. C., which bas elicited tbe most favorable criticism. Mr. John H. Shuck, of the Barnwell Journal, is at the Pavilion Hotel. Still another lot of prisoners were sent off to the penitentiary yesterday. The jail ia now nearly empty, but was reinforced by four recruits yea. terday. The City Registrar's report for last week showa a total of only twelve deaths-five whites and seven blacks. R. M.
