do much to restore my strength. But how
can an invalid exercise out doors in New York

' ty of benefit from change of climate as would
warrant a physician in pi escribing that course.

symptoms were aggravated; yet I speut a l the
time out coors that my strength would-pt nuit ;
and at the end of-a fortnight I begau lo ?m
. prove, and that improvement has continued,
?with one or two intervals of retrocrtsaion,
slowly, very eluwly, until now. At present 1
can, as a daily exercise, wa.k Ihre?; or four
miles, and gallop on horseback tn ni ten to
twenty miks more,besides playing croquet two
or three hours, remaining out-d iois hom
breakfast to sundown, wimont any sern?o ot
exhaustion. I have had neither chill, lever,
nor night-sweat for two -mouths; wy pulse

frequent aud severe, and my weight increased

Although Aiken has been known at thc
. South for twenty years and more as a desirab e
resort. iy winter for those suffering norn pul?
monary'comp.aims, aud as a summer resort
for those who desired to escape the milarious
influences which prevail so exlousivoly in the
South, it h is ii J general tepu'o at the North.
Many of those now here did not know of it un?
til they reached the Sooth. A'ken is in the
western pi ri iou of South Carolina, ono hun
dr?d and twenty miles from Charleston, elevat
ed six bunmeu and fiftv feet nbovo.tbo level of
(bat city, and three hundred and fifty feet
' above Augusta,, Georgia, from which it is
seventeen mdee distant. It is upon tho "water?
shed" which divides the streams emptying
into the oe -an at Savannah through the river
of the same name, and those reaching the At?
lantic at Charleston through the Eclisto River.
The village Les diroctly upon the South Caro?
lina Rai ro id, and the station is less than two
hundred leet from the hotel whero X am writ?
ing. There aro from one hundred to one hun?
dred and fifty dwellings, and as each building
lot is from two to three acres in extent, and
the rectangular streets are all ono.hundred and
fifty feet wide, it is almost a vii ht go of "mag?
nificent distances." I have-not been able hilly
to decide whether the village is in tho woods
or the woods in the village, so numerous are
the trees. Many of the grounds are prettily
laid oat and nicely kept.
THE CHILATE.
The climate is not so warm as to be debilita
. ting, nor is it so cold as to interfere with tho
fullest enjoyment of oub-door exercise and
amusement. X have taken pains tJ ?.reserve a

for two months, and then concluded the air

to say that nearly all the boarders here are in?
valids, who requite special attention and pecu?
liar diet, and in that view prices are not un?
reasonable. Tue fare is as /rood as can be ex?
ported so far inland, and cannot justly be com?
plained of. In tnis respect there is a marked
improvement over former years, I am told.

Hush Maxwell, of New York, has spent the
winter here, and Thurlow Weed has boen hero
several week*. The former has improved very
much, indeed, in health, and the latter is un?
derstood to be gaming slowly. They frequent?
ly interest the guests here by their brilliant
conversation at the fire-tide of an evening and
either of them can commence tho narration of
some incident iu his own history in tho words
ol tho secondary, titlo of Scott's Waverly
"Tis sixtv yours since." Hemati J. Redfield,'
another New York octogenarian, has alsobeon
spending a few days herc. Captain Oscar
Coles and General Dimmick, United States
army, a e wintering at this hotel. Tho inva?

throat aud lungs. The m dade im iginaire is
rarely found lu re. It is common tu hear some
cadaverous individual asseverate, with beuv
liis chest and lamins: breath, that "his lunge

d.fficulty in bis throat." That self-deception
is ao idiosyucracy ot his di.-etise. Although
so many of ibo guests arciuvalids, yet as most
of them aie accompanied by friends (and nono
should como bete unattended by a IVieud) -
tomo of them by their entire families, the
placo is by no means dull. Consumption is
itself a cheotful disease, and gay cavalcades
brighten tho streets emery pleasant morning,
and tho numerous croquet grounds/ resound
with merry laughter.

were stationed here, and when they loft for tho
