FATAL ACCIDENT.-Wo learn that Mr. Henry
E. Lucas, Jr., while on his plantation, Spring Hill,
in St Thomas Parish, was accidentally shot on the
morning of the 1st instant by the premature dis?
charge of a pistol, causing his instant death. The
parCculars of thia deplorable aoeident have not yet
reached has friends in the city.

finial.ed scholar and gentleman. He graduated in liieh
standing at Yalo Collude, and subsequently at the
Cambridge Divinity school For several years he
filled the pulpit of the First Unitarian Ctiurch of .-an
Frakiclseo, with great ability and success. Bis
health failing he was obliged to tr sign his position
there. Having recovered his health and returned to
the activo duties of bis piofession, he was induced to
accept an invitation from the church in this city,
for the temporary supply of the pulpit For over
two mouths the regular worvhlpp1 rs in this Church,
with many ot c tber denominations, have enjoyed the
a rare opportunity of bearing his eloquent logical
and finished discourses.
Gifted hy natura with all ths concomitants that
make the finished orator, he his, besides, been
thoroughly prepared by oui rare for the exalted
duties or his profession. In his preaching, he aeeks
only to dispense the "V> ord of Life'/ as contained in
the Gospel, and entrre'y eschews politice. He comes
ameng a suffering people wi?h the "Gospel of peace
and good will towards all men," and while advoca?
ting, with the boldness that comes ot conviction, the
distinctive doatrinas of the denomination to which

well filled, although not BO crowded as lt would
doubtless have been at any other season. Fra Dl
avolo was better put upon the stage than we could
have expected. There were the usual cuttings to
which we have ts submit, but we must enter a pro?
test against the omission of Agnes ta Jouvencelle.
The orchestra ws? generally well in hand, never
Lacking in energy, bat wanting often in delicacy of
accompaniment. Miss Clara Lang, as Zerlina, sang
with especial sweetness in the second act. and Mad.
Frederic! Lady Allcash) sang throughout in excel?
lent taste and with considerable skill. Himmer,
as fra Diaeolo, displayed his usual energy aad
mobility of features. He wanted grass iu the first
act, but sang tbs broad phrases of the grand air, in
the third act, with force and dramatic expression.
The make np of the two brigands wat capital, and
their acting and singing excellent. Lord Allcash
(having abandone! the traditional Brinah white coat
aad paarl buttons) sang with great ability all that
was left to him. Lorenzo (the Captain Jerks of the
opera) looked pretty and marched well.. Upon the
whole, the opera went off remaik.bly weil, and we
frost that D-r Freischutz, which is announced for
this evening, may be played to a heuse crowded to
suffocation.
