Notwithstanding tho unpropitious weather, the church at the appointed hour was Ulled with the beauij end ttvulon of tho city, Tho exercises woro opened with prayer by the Rev. W. C. At the conclusion of the reading of thc ode, Rev. J. L. Girardoau pronounced tho oraiion, taking as his subject, Charity. Avoiding generalities and ab? stractions, und tue trite reflections which usually form the stock of charity discourses, he brought the attention of his audience to tho suffering condition of the seaboard of South Carolina as compared with its flourishing condition before the war. He said ttuly that this was a subject ot immediate interest to hts audionco, and ono moro particularly connect? ed w;th tho objects of thc association whose anni? versary was the occasion of tho celebration. He spoke ot thc natural affection of all men for the land of their birth, and with tioluresquo descrip? tion and eloquout illustration ho proceeded lot-how that tho love of thc low-country South Carolinian for tho rivers, swamps, woodlauds and soi shore of the scenes of his youth, waa far from unreasonable. Leaving the doacription of the natural beauty of the country, he next spoke of the charming refinement ct tho so ;ial lifo of the people, and tho thril.'ng his? torical associations which kopt alive among thom tho sent moots of patriotism and honor. Tho breaking out of the war, and the consequent suffering of the pcoplo, espe? cially the refugees, next claimed the attention of tho speaker, and the dreadful and pair ful icones of that toriiblc time were portrayed with a vivid truthfulness that none would appreciate moro keenly thin tho au? dience lo which he spoke. The blazing homjstead, fair women working in the field, households bereft of their beloved; but, above all, the dreadful catas? trophe ot defeat, the death of the nationality, iu which wo<e enrapt ovory sentiment and affection wh'.eh ' docs honor t o humanity. THE SOUTH CAROLINA LOAN AND TRUST COMPUTE.-The stockholders of this cimpanymet yesterday at the hall of tho Southwestern Railroad Bank. Wm. C. Bee, Esq. was called to tbe Chair, and G. L. Buist, Esq. was requested to act as Sec? retary. i Messrs. Gao. 8. Cameron and A. P. Johnston, com missioi:erp, reported that the necessary subscription to organize had been taken, and the amount requir? ed under the charter bad been paid in cash. At a meeting of a committee of tho Washington Light Infantry Charitable Association, yesterday afternoon, it was determined to erect a monument to the dead of (he various Confederate companies that sprung from thc old Washington Light Infan? try, un i to hold a fair in May to aid the society in that and their penoral charitable purposes. Two designs of a mo jument were submitted by Mr. w. T. White, an old member of the corps, both very handsome. One ia for a monument thirty feet bi^h, of pure white marble, in three parts : 1. A base of successive blocks, of diminishing, size, lormlng slops all around; 2. Three tablets for the dead re? spectively of i o mp my A, the Hampton Legion, and Company B. Above these tablets the words "Ber? muda Hundreds," In large letters, and below them "Weldoj Railroad," *'Manoseas" and "Fort Fisher;" 8. A shaft with the seal ol the company in relief. This monument would cost $5000. The other is not so elaborate, and consequently not to costly.
