the management of Mr. Jame M. Nixon, and a
proprietary interest of Mr. Dan Costello, ls to visit
Charleston on Monday, tho 22d of February, re
maining three days. Tbo gentleman whose name
appears as tho owner is the .original James Robin
son-"Llt'lo Jimna>"-tho diminutive sprite who.
Mine years ano, constituted the great card in Robin
son & Bldred's Circus, He ls a Southern boy, a Ken
tuckian, and ha* vbtted with desHded success all
tho principal cities of Europe and America, where
no one ever attempted to dispute his titlo of cham
pion. Ho performs all his foale on a bare-back
horse, and rides with, a vim, ene ;y and grace which
appear marvellous. Some of our older readors may
remember tho circumstance that Charleston was the
noone of bia trlnmp int debut in tho arena. He has
not ridden in thc South si nco he was a child, and he
hopes that lus return to the lani of his b rt li, loaded
as he U ith hi li honora, wM be genial and plea
sant. He ha* an excellent association of artistes in
his Champion Circus.

few weeks In Charleston for the purpose of secur

DEATH OF COLO L J. . STAN.-The Barn
well Journal contains a ful ^Dituary notice of tho
late Colonel J. J. Byan, who . died at that place on
Monday, tbe 8th Instant. Coloucl Byan was a na
tive of Irolaud, but. had been brought to tnis coun
try in his infancy,'and had lived at Barnwell iroin
thc Uni) he was eighteen years ol ago. Bo was a
fortunate merchant, and a prominent member of
tho Legislature before tho war. During tho war he
was a colonel ol reserves, and afterwards superin
tendent of labor on the coast. After tho war, having
lost his fortune, he become an agent ot tho South
Caroliua Railroad Company, which position he held
until disabled by disease.
THE BABNWBLL JOUBNAL. - Mr. John S.
Shuek, an active and enterprising young merchant,
of RarnweU Courthouse, has commenced the publi
cation of a new papor at that place, entitled tho
Barnwell Journal. The first numbr, which was
published on the 11th instant, sustains Mr. Shu'k's
previous reputation for euorgy and business capac
ity. lt is well ed. cd, and excellently well printed
and wei made up. The type aud other material of
tho Journal were supplied by Messrs. Walker, Evans
& Cogswoll, ol this elly, who do a large business iu
that line, having furnished the material of a number
of new papers lately ; among which may be men
tioned in this State, the Chester Reporter and Dar
lington Dtmoorati both handsome weeklies.
THE ANNIVERSARY OF TDE BIBLE SOCIETY.
Tho fifty-eighth anniversary of the Charleston Bible
Society will tako place this evening, at half-past seveu
o'clock, at tho fcecond Presbyterian Church. Tho
annual report of tho society will bo road by tho Rev.
W. H. Adams, after which addresses will bo deliver
ed by tho Rev. J. R. Pickel t and thc Rev. Dr. Hicks.
Tho Board of Managers state that they feel tho ne
cessity of increasing the efforts of the society in cir
culating the Scriptures, and earnestly appeal to the
citizens of Charleston to cm-oil their uamcs as mem
bers. Tho payment of only two dollars a year con
stitutes membership. The public are invited to at
tend tho exercises ibis evening, when a collection
will bo taken up to aid the work in which (he sorloty
zealously engaged.

with Northern routes nt Ringville and Columbia,
and with the Camden train at Kiugville, leaves
Charleston at 8.30 A. M , anti airives at Columbia at
145 P. M. Tho night express train for Augusta
leaves Charleston at 7 30 P. M" and arrive at Augus
ta at C.30 A. Jy . The night express train for Colum
bia leaves Charleston at 6.06 P. M., and arrives at

loaves Charleston at 3 P. M., and airives at Summer

by a shell, which had been embedded therein during
the bombardment.
