"Confelerate cavalry onachirgo." "Or retreat? ing." "Tho Rhostof Tam O'shanter'* mare." "Any other hor.se would get as thin that eat as little." Suchwers some of the myriad interrogatories and remarks made by the crowd yesterday on the appear? ance of a velocipede in, the streets of thl? oity. The Savannah Advertiser boasts that Savannah is no; be ; hind the world, because somebody has an agency for velocipedes lor Georgia and South Carolina. Well, we aoknowloige that Charleston ia some seconds be ! hind Parla and New York, but she baa a velocipede of her own manufacture, and she intends to catch , up. Th? one that created such a ' yesterday was made by Mr. Due, an expert tinner, in conjunction ?Uh Mr. D. B Haselton, the sawing machine man, and waa . ridden by Mr. Due through the pr n ci pal streets, st a rate that would icon reduce horse flesh to ihe tenuity of the velocipede it.-olf. Mr. Due was followed, tengo in? termito, by a great crowd of men and boys, black ?nd white; and people indoors who hoard he was coming rushed to tho wlncewa to get a peep at the wonderful hone'aubatltute. The sensation created by the mechanical Roainanto is, however, best illus? trated by tho fact that a certain well known young amateur poet wa? found by his friends in a fainting flt, his hand ?till holding a piece of paper on which were written the following hnea: YonwiahtorhVme velocipede? THE CATHOLIC OBFHAN ASYLUMS.-For the first timo since tholr establishment, the two Catholic Orphan Asylums (malo and t?malei of charleston, aro about to appeal to the city government for assis? tance. We learn that the good Sisters are com? pelled to this step with reluctance, and only under the pressure of sore necessity. The following peti? tion aaa been very numerously signed by the friends and well wisher j of tho Asylums among thc tax-payers, and (as copies have boen left ut the newspaper offices) we doubt not that large numbers of our humano citizens generally will add their signatures to the memorial. THE CITS OF CHABTJESTON. * To the Honorable IM Mut-yor and Aldermen in Com mon Coincil assembled : The m omi rial of the undersigned tax-payers of the ol ty aforesaid, humbly and respeotiuUy ehowetb, that the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, a body poli? tico and corporate, instituted for charitable pur? poses, have been estub'.ished in this city since 1829, from which period uown to the preseut day toey have beon engaged iu atending the tick and main? taining and training the orphan. Boon after the o*tub:ishmom of their ordei in this city, they open? ed a female orphan as v lum which has ever since b' eu filled to its entire capacity. This asylum they hav? been enabled to keep up only by the most strenuous exertions on toeir part, tteavicnVy labor? ing under ihe most difficult embarrassments. And they have had to depend for its support chiefly upon their own Utforts, and the oharitanle donations ot the Ca holic citizens of Charleston. AB long as there was room tor another, no orphan ever applied in vain for admission to their asylum They have clothed, fed, comforted and trained upon an average, sixty-five every year from the foundaiion of their institution to, .this day. At no time have these ladies had under their care and tuition lesa than fifty of these little ones, while at other times the number of their little inmates has exceeded seventy five. Besides this female crphan asylum, a boy's orphan ieylum has been opened in Cannon-street, contain lng twenty-one boys. This was established June 1867. The present year there are maintained in these two tsylums eighty-six orphans, male and female.
