On Tueatlay the wind herc blew a pale from south? east during much of the day, accompanied by heavy rain, which continued during tho night, but on Wednesday morning the wind changed to south . west, when the weather moderated, but waa too warm to be seasonable. These strong gales have caused the detention ot most of our coastwise steamers, and the steamship Sea Gull, which lo t her wharf yesterday, for Baltimore, came to an anchor iu the roads. Ihe steamship Charleston, lor New New York, was aleo prevented from leaving, hut both of these tteamsbips will probably get to sea to-.5 ay. The steamer Dictator, of the Florida Une, was abo kept over until last night, when fabe departed. AN APPEAL.-The congregation of the Metho? dist Episcopal Ohmvh South, of Columbia, C., from being the wealthiest has become one of tho poorest in the State. Ou tho ever memorable night of the 17th of Februaty, 1865, not only tho church edifice, the lecture-room and parsonage were de? stroyed by fire, but nearly all the property of the members of the congregation was burned up. leaving them without the means io rebuild a place of worship. Undi i these painful circumstances, this once wealthy and liberal congregation make? an appeal to th? generosity of the pe ipi5 of the South in general, and especially to tho members of the Method!:t Episcopal Church South, for contribu? tions in behalf of their distressed church. TI AN INLAND BUILT VESSEL.-The schooner Narragansett, Captain Edgar, which roached our port on Saturday last, from Galveston, bound to Boston, was constructed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1862. Bbc had to pass through the Welland and Redo Canal and the St? Lawrence Fiver to reach thc ocean. Bhe has made several sueoessful trips to Europe, and showed fine sea-going qualities. She is ouc hundred and forty-'our leet long, twenty-four feet beam, and sis hundred tons burden, and can carry ono thou? sand halos of cotton. It is* not often that a vessel built inland becomes such a regular and successful soa-goer, and Captain Edgar dosorves credit tor th? onergy and enterprise with which he has managed his curious craft. A CASE OF BIGAMY.-No little gossip was oc? casioned in this usually quiet community yesterday, by the arrest of a young man of good origin and character, in tho employ of the city railway, on tho charge of bigamy, 'l he arrest was made at the in? stance of a very respectable looking lady, by the namo of M. L. Blocker, who states in her affidavit that she was lawfully married to tho dolendant, Chorlos W. Blocker, on tho 22J of June, 18G0. in Beaufort, S. C., by tho Rev. Mr. Wilson, of that place. It is rn mored that the husband was not as faithful as he should have been, leaning too much to the fascinations of a Miss mary C. Jones, rosidiug at the corner of Newnsu and Rutlcdgo streets, to whom he was married ou the 31st ultimo, by the Rev. Dr. Bachman, who w?s in utter ignorance of tho pre? vious espousal. HIGHWAY BOBBEBY AND MT/BDEIIOUS ASSAULT. Mr. J. B. Tennent states that on his way homo from John's Island, on Monday night last, at ll o'clock, when in Coming-street, near tho corner of Cannon, ho saw a crowd of colored men, amongst whom waa a mulatto fallow, who grabbed him and jerked him into an alley near by, when another asked if ho was a white man, to which the mulatto and ha replied "yes." IN O sooner had the words lett his lips than ho received a blow in his mouth, which staggered bim. Ho tried to defend himself, when a colored man whom ho recognized us a butchor in the mar? ket, gavo him another blow, which causod him to fall. The crowd thou gattacrsd aro.und him and gave him several severe kicks. In his critical situation, ho begged them to spare his life, and tried to rise, when one of thom struck him over the head with something that felt like a pistol barrel, which felled him to the earth. They then rifled his pockets and took oil the money ho h id, fortunately not much, aud his Ano felt hat. When they had finished their work of robbory, they cursed Mr. Tennent in dis? gustingly i docent terms, and bid him begone. Mr. Tennent says he knows of no reason whatever why he was attacked, and concludes he must have been mistaken for some ono else. Tho matter bas been put into the hands of a magistrat >, and will bc thor? oughly investigated. Mr. Tennent further states that two gentlemen tried to interfore in his behalt, and ono of them was badly beaten. THE HOT SUPPE?.-This entertainment was very numerously attended last night, and is im? proving in popular estimation.
