Tbc Insurrection In Cuba.
The Spanish troops who are striving
stamp out the so-called rebellion in Cu
will find that it is no easy task to overeo
a people who are fighting for delivcrai
from oppression, and who are inspire J a
fortified by the memory of decades of
jury and wrong. It has always been t
policy of tho Spaniard? to wring the li
farthing out of the native Cubans, treat?
them the while with brutul and sava
'contempt. This has nurtured the bitt
and uncompromising hatred which is nt
finding vent.
While Spain wa9 Bourbon there was i
salvation for Cuba; but when thc revol
tion was successful and Isabella Segum
driven from the throne, the Cubans d
raanded their independence and raised tl
stnndard of revolt. So far, the insurre
tion' has been successful; for it ha9 n
'been suppressed. The Spaniards are r
iuforcing their twenty thosand eoldie;
already in the field with many thousan
more, while General C?spedes, the lead<
of the insurgents, has barely fifteen thot
sand men poorly armed and equipped. Et
C?spedes is thoroughly, in earnest, aB ar

Cuban population.
Tho weapons of tho insurgents are (
thc commonest kind. They have a fe1
rifles and a small number of hand-grenades
said to have been lately furnished then

for one shot, and have invented a ne\
weapon which may be used successfully t

There are strange stories of three thousant
rebels having laid down their arms, and o

, In the meanwhile, Havana, with secrci
voice and pen, keeps up her connection witt
her kindred in the field. Mouey is sent
freely to the liberal camp despite thc unex?
ampled vigilance of thc Captaiu Generali
officers. The young men of thc oldest and
wealthiest families hasten to the support
Of the insurgents, and the public presses,
taking advantage of the freedom gi anted
them by Dulce, ere outspoken in their de?
mand of thc right to govern themselves.
A dozen new papers have been issued in n
week; the latest of them, "The Republican
Convention," having at the head of its col?
umns "Viva la Rep?blica. No more despots.
Down with tyrants." This paper salutes
thc United Stales with a prayer for the
bencdiotion of "thc powerful mother re?
public," and begs all tho people of the isle
to form republican committees-active, en?
ergetic and pacific.
The Cubana feel now that what is good
for Spaiu is good for Cuba; and the ques?
tion is whether self government alone will
content them. Spain herself has not deci?
ded between a republican or monarchical
form of government: but the leaning is to?
wards the latter. Dulce has conceded a
few fragments of liberty to the "ever faith?
ful Lie," which Spain may lake i;way
whenever she pleases. With a Bourbon or
an Orleans enthroned at Madrid, there
would be no safety for Cuba. Thc old talc
would be told agaiD, with variations, and
Cuba would be handed over once more to
the tender mercies of legions of mercenary
soldiers, and an army of worse office-hold
ers and public plunderers. The probability
is, therefore, that the Cubans will demand
self-government in the sense of indepen?
dence, and will be satufied with nothing
less. Annexation to the United States hus
its place in the programme; but it is kept
in the back grouad, and will not be brought
prominently forward until independmce ?B
accomplished and Cuba is free, when, if
our advice weighs for aught ia the 6cale,
she will remaiu her own master and steer
clear of the centralization government at
Washington.
The present insurrection may, of course,
be put down; but the enmity of race will
not be put down, and in her distance from
Spain and in the friendship of the United
States, the Cubans will find a strength of po?
sition which will enable them to agitate!
agitate ! agitate ! until victory is won, and
the "Gem of the Antilles" is free from the
arrogant tyranny of Spain.
A State Agricultural Convention.

Mr. C. P.- Pelham, formerly editor of the
Columbia Guardian, writes to the Phoenix
urging the organization of the agricultural
interest of our State. He says : "Let us
form agricultural societies in every district
in the State. Our Democratic clubs, al?
ready organized., will serve us admirably
fer this purpose. Next, let us hold a State
Agricultural Convention in Columbia, in
April or May. Railroad companies, we
take it for granted, will be as liberal and
accommodaiiag here as in Georgia. Im?
proved methods of cultivating cotton and
other crops, the introduction of new ones,
the regulation of the labor in our midst,
the steps necessary to be taken to promote
immigration, the enclosure system, the im?
provement of stock, the development of our
water power, the establishment of the vari?
ous classes of manufactories, agricultural
education, kc, &c , are a few of thc mat?
ters which demand concert of action ; other
topics will suggest themselves readily, as ap?
propriate to the business of suoh a conven?
tion."
Thc Southern Pacific Railroad Bill.
Thc Memphis, ?1 Paso and Pacific Rail?
road bill will be introduced into both
Houses of Congress very soon. It differs
from others in this, that it asks for no sub?
sidy of land, inasmuch as Texas has given
it eight millions of acres ; it asks for no aid
upon second mortgage, but simply for the
guarantee of the interest upon Its beads,
and provides an ample sinkiog fund to se?
cure thc payment of the principal and in?
terest. It asks for such assistance only
after the road is completed in sections, so
that when this is dono it may proceed to
the next section. The bill contemplates
the construction of a main trunk road from
Memphis to thc Pacific Ocean vin Little
Rock, Aik ; Jefferson, Texas; and through
Northern Texas to Ll Paso, thence to San
Diego, California, connecting in California
with thc California Southern Pacific, if ar?
rangement can bc made for this. Thc bill
asks also for the same assistauce to the
Cairo and Fulton, the Vicksburg and Shreve?
port roads, which will be regarded as
brunches to thc main trunk, and thus thc
road has three termini upon the Mississippi.
We trust that this road will receive the
hearty support of every Southern member
of Congress. It is high time that the South
had some help from the Federal Govern?
ment, and wo know of no project that will
be of greater advantage to the Southern
States than the Southern Pacific Railroad
plants.

WHEN THE PURE MEDICINAL RESTORATIVE,
now so widely knonn as WOLFE'S SCHIEDAM
SCHNAPPS, was iniroduced into the world uDder
thc endorsement of four thousand leading members
of the medical profession some twenty years ago, its.
proprietor was well aware that it could not wholly
escape the penalty attached to all new and usefUf
preparations. He.'therefore. endeavored to invest ii
with strongest po?siblo safeguard against counter?
feiters, and to rocder all attempts to pirate it diffi?
cult and dangerous. It was submitted to distin?
guished chemists for analysis,, and pronounced by
them the purest spirit ever manufactured. Ita puri?
ty and properties having been thus ascertained, sam?
ples of the articlo were forwarded to ten thousand
physicians, including all the leading practitioners in
tbo United States, for purposes of experiment. A
circular, requesting a trial of the preparation and a
report of Hie result, accompanied each specimen.
Four thousand of the most eminent medical men in
the Union promptly responded. Their opinions of
thc article were unanimously favorable. Sucb a
prepjtration, they said, had long been wanted by
thc profession, as no reliance could be placed on the
ordinary liquors of commerce, all of which were
more or less adulterated, and therefore unfit for
medical purposes. The peculiar excellence and
strength of the oi of Juniper, wnich formed one of
the principal ingredients of the Schnapps, together
with an unalloyed character of tho alcoholic ele?
ment, give it, in the estimation of tho faculty, a
j marked superiority over evory other diffusive stirou
I laut as a diuretic, tonic and restorative.
These satisfactory credentials irom professional
men of the highest rank were published in a con?
densed form, and oneloscd with each bottle of the
Schnapps, as one of tho guarantees of its genuine?
ness. Other precautions against fraud were also
adopted; a patent was obtained for thc article, the
label was copyrighted, a Jae simile of the proprietor's
autograph signature wa= attached to each label and
rover, his namo and that of the preparation were em?
bossed on the bottles, and the corks were sealed with
his private seal. No article had ever been sold in
this country under tho name of Schnapps prior to
thc introductiou of Wolfe's- Schiedam Aromatic
Schnapps, in 1851; and tho label was deposited, as
his trude ronrk, in the United States District Court
for thc Southern District of Now York during that
year.
lt might be supposed by persons una-qnain'ed
with the djring character of tuc pirales who prey
upon the reputation o ("honorable merchants by vend?
ing deleterious trash under thoi- name, that the pro?
tections so carefully thro wu around tbeso Schnapps
would have precluded (bo introductions and sale ol
counterfeit!?. They eeeni, however, only to have
stimulated the rapacity of impostors. The trade
mark o? th-- proprietor has been stolen; th? indorse?
ment which his Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps alone
received from thc medical profession has been
claimed by mendacious humbugs; bis labels au J
bottles have been imitated, hts advertisements para?
phrased, his circulars copied, aud worse than all,
dishonorable retailers, after disposing of thc genuine
couteuts of his bottles, have Oded them up with
common gin, thc most dele'orious of all liquors, and
thus made his name and br ind a cover for poifoii.
Tho public, thc mod leal profession and the sick,
for whom the Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps is pre?
scribed as a remedy, arc equally intereste ; with thc
proprietor in thcdclcc:iou and suppression of those
nefarious practices. Thc genuine article, manufac?
