Southern and Border State bonds wero dull under a
diminished inquiry and tho market was inclined to
yield. Indeed, the reaotion whioh commenced at
tho boanning of the week has not ceased. It shows
how exteusivoly tho lato demand was speculative.
Those who 'unloaded' at the high priced of last

again." Tho ?mo paper, in its report for Thursday,
says: "Southern State oecurities were inactive.
Noith Carolinas were off about X, on account of tho
passage of a bill in one branch of the 1 egislaturo at
Raleigh increasing the bonded debt. Louisiana sises
and eights were off, in consequence of a report tbat
some New Orleans speculators induced a local judge

has endorse! tho petition iu tho following letter:
STAT? OF SOUTH CAHOLINA, i
1'xKcuTivt: DEPARTMENT, J
COLUMBIA, January 20, 1869 )
1 earnestly recommend to the kindly considera?
tions and good offices of our terna! ors and represen?
tativos in congress Sister Xavier, of tho religious or?
der of Our Lady of Mercy, who visits Washington
City with a view of procuring on appropriation from
Congress for the rebuilding of her orphan asylum,
which was destroyed during tho bombardment ol
the city.
I was personally oogn?zant, during my imprison?
ment in Charleston, and subsequently wbilo 1 was
stationed in that city, of the active si d unceasing
benevolence of the Sisters ot Moroy; their oharitab'e
sfflccs being freely dealt out to all who needed them,
without xoferouce to c ass, condition or nationality;
ind I knew oi many friends and acquaintances in the
Federal Army who were the re. i pieu ts of their benefi?
cent and kind, attentions. Many a sick and wounded
Federal prisoner was indebted to thom for necessary
aouri?limont and attention; and frequently their
lyiug pillows were ?oothed and comforted by tho
pious consolations of the ~taters of Meroy.
I earnestly hope that they may succeed in their
application to Congress, to enable them to rebuild
their desolated edifice, so long sedulously devoted to
the sh Uer anti education of the. orphans of Charles?
ton, as a slight recognition of ibeir unselfish devo?
tion to the alleviation of human suffering.

causing many injurious effects.
The public is justly suspicious of nearly every?
