duck their heads and prepare for tho supposed inevi?

Has the spirit of our fathers cf '76 entirely gone
from us ? Is there no wrong, however- glarirg-no
outrage ou our lights, however gross, which will not
bc submitted to?
It may be all very" well for a conquered people to
accept the l?gitimit? results of conquest, and it is
doubtless very foolish for a prisoner, of ivar to be
klclii ag at th? shins of his guard; but docs once con
quo. cd mean conquered and slaves for over ? Coes
submission to the conqueror involve a continuing
abject giving up ol every chim and shadow of right
for all time ? Does useless resistance to the Recon?
struction acts of Congress in 186T reqoire us also to
suffer unconstitutional Slate legislation to deprive
us ot tho few rights which have been left us ? We
:h uk not.
We hold (he tight of the poop'e ot Charleston to

far beyond the reach of a Stat? Legislature to impair
BB it is a s-crcd duty upon us to maintain it.
The attempt of Pillsbury and Corbin to help a

constitutional rgbt of the corporators in favor of
Pillsbury, and tho piecodent will 1 e established for
thc total annihilation of ourancioat libi nits.
Our people should bo aroused to their danger.
It is no longer a question between Lcsesue and
Pillsbury-no longer a question botween Pillsbury
and tho Acting Board of Aldermen-not a question
of pirty or of to-day. but if this nefarious bill
passes, it ls a question between the Legislature and
the whole community cf Charleston, affecting the
