the city, desirous of kiding Bishop P?rsico in the
erection of the new church in Aiken, purpose giving
a hot supper and refreshment entertainment in
Hibernian Hall' on the 2d of February, to continue
for taroo days. In connection with the entertain?
ment, there will bo offered for sale a fine collection
of useful and fancy articles. 1 he whole matter W ill
be under the patronage of a number of prominent

will take her farewell benefit, and make her last ap?
pearance but one, on wbich occasion an entirely
?Anew play will be presented, in which several new
actors who have been recently engaged by Mr. Gil?
bert will make their first appearance. The play is
.entitled, "Blow fsr Llow," and was first prcduced in
London, September Sch, 1888, and is still running
there. It woiild be well to engage seats in advance,

raigned on the charge of annoying the guests at the
Charleston'Hotel. He waa fined $5.
The next was a young, lonely and erring damsel
by the name of Garrie, who was .lodged for being
drunk and disorderly and attempting to break Into*
Annie Jackson's house in West-street, - resisting the
police and afterwards breaking a water bucket in her
cell. Fined $10, and in default "sent up" for ten
days.
Jacob Butler, a young hopeful of sable hue, in his
fourteenth summer, was sent to thc House of Corree,
tion for thirty days for stealing a pair of shoos and
for vagrancy.
Henry Sprigison, white, lodged for being under the
Influence of liquor and sleaplng in the street, at the

r> -The Coroner's, jury rendered, their verdict

waa" hilled, on Sunday night, in Calhouu-stroet.,
lae inquest lasted tho greater part of three days,
and the jory, which consisted exclusively "of colored
men, appeared to be moat anxious to sift the truth
lro'n the testimony which was brought before them.
'I ho evidence in the case may bo summed up as
follow.*:
On Sunday last the murdered maa, with Trinco
Prfolean, ittephea Johe* and Jamek J?nalos, all of
them colored, were in company together, and at
about TP. H., Started Out to goto the West Point
lillis. After they had gens some distance two white
aaen passed Prlolcau, who had dropped behind, and
PriolesU heard Stephen Jones cull out twice to Ben
Jones to go on home. Prioleau turned to look, and
saw the two white men standing up, and saw Ben
Jones, who waa in front ef them, rnr off
the sidewalk, holding bia head down. Prioleau
ran up and asked the white mon what was the mat
I ter, and asked one of, them whether he knocked
tho boy Jones. The man replied with a ourse, in
tho a ffli ma ti ve,, and added that he would knock the
speaker, Prioleau, who ihen said, "No you can't."
The white man; when'some more words had passed,
j drew a knife and made at Prioleau, who ran to the
middle of the street. {'ri olean then returned to" the
sidewalk and found that Ben Jones was dead. Prio?
leau did not witness the fatal blow, but could rr cog?
nize the white m ?on who told him that he had H truck
Jenes. Jas. Jenkins was walking ahead of Ben Jones,
and beard some on? say, "By God, I will not move for
yon;" and another person say, "Well, I will not
move for yon." Directly after, Jenkins heard Ben
Jones say. "Oh, Lord I" He turned back st once
ona caught Jones, who had then been cu?. Stephen
Jones, who was. one of tho party, heard Ben Jones
cry out "Oh, Lord," and when he tamed met Prince
Prioleau running towards him (the witness); he Baw
three or four white men, who were walking slowly,
and did not disturb him ; a few minutes later. Piinoe
came np with some bricks in his hand and called
Bea, when witness (Stephen Jones) paid, "Bow can
you call Ben when he ls dead." Prince then ran off.
This witness did net see Prince talkiag to any white
men, nor any boys speaking to him, nor hear any poi?
son threaten him, nor did Prince tell witness that Ben
had been stabbed by a white man when hs (Prince)
carno up with the bricks in his hand; witness did
hear Prince tell Lieutenant Hendricks so after the
body had bean carried to the house ef the witness.

I was in .Calboun-strett at or about seven o'clock
P. M. on nie ;4th January, 1869, between Middle and
Wall streets, in company with Riey Morgan, John
King, Jehu' Burke, -- Armstrong, and I heard
James Beeves say to a colored man that if he could
not walk the streets without being troubled, that he
would Ss sore ?body; sa?d Beeves had a kuifo in his
hand at the time, and I saw h'm put it into the back
of his rants; Ocorge Murray went up to him and
asked bim to come home ; took him by the hand
and carried him to bia (murray's) house; when
Reeves got to .the house he asked if this was Mrs.
Murray's; so toe- one -paid yes, an t he went
in; I. was alongside ol Beeves as he was
going to Mt s.? ' Murray's house, and there was
a crowd along also; I then went to where the man
was lying, but could not soe hun, thone being such a
crowd around bim; heard some persons sing out,
"aarry i ito tb ibo dootor j" I heard Reeves pay vahe
was going lo Mrs. Murray's, "I hil'.ort," and some?
thing elsa - that rou did ns if he ?aid, "tho eon of a
bitch." I heard Beeves say to Prince Prioleau (col?
ored), "you son of a bitch. I'll give it to you." and I
saw him put his hand behind his back, and after
Prince Prioleau ran off, I saw th knife iu ltoevee'
hands; deponent told Mr, Ferguson that he saw
Reeves put the. knife behind hie back.
George Murray, o' No, 61 Calhoun-sticet, saw
James Beeves and a colored man quarrelling. Wit?
ness said;.
The colored man cursed Beaven, the colored man
haring a brick in his hand ; James Reeves cursed the
colored man, saying "I'll cut you, too;" the colored
man then ran off, but before the colored man ran off
I saw Reeves pick up a knife, which was on the pave?
ment, and make two or there efforts to cut him (tho
colored man) with the said knife.

On Tuesday morning, between four and five
o'clock, while Mr. and Mis. George Martin, living at
Mo. 17 Ann-street, were lying in bed, Mrs. Martin,
who happened to be awake, saw two colored men en*
ter the window of her chamber from ' the piazza.
Mrs. Martin lay perfectly quiet and tried to rouse
her husband, who was sound s sleep. One of the
burglars remained In the chamber, while
the other one went into the adjoining
room. The one who remained in the chamber went
towards the bed, and while he lowered the covering
and felt under the pillow, had a largs butchsr's
knife in his hand, which he held over Mr. Martin.
Mrs. Marlin mide no sign, but saw all that went on.
When the burglar loft the bed, ho placed the knife in
bis teeth, ead walked about th* room, searching th*
drawers, frcm whbh he took thirty-five dollars la
greenbacks and ave dollars in gold, in one dollar
pieces. He then went ont and Joined his companion,
who was operating in the next room. After awhile
he returned, and again approached the bedside of
Mr. Martin, and elevated the huge knlf* over him.
Mrs. Martin, with great coolness and courage, then
jumped np and ssiasd an artillery sword near the
bed, and white the burglar's arm was extended ever
her sleeping husbicd, struck the burglar a terribie
blow, which caused tbe knife to fall from his grasp.
