new play will be presented, in which several new
actors who have boen recently engaged by Mr. Gil?
bert will make their first appearance. The play is

by the name of Carrie, who was lodged for being
drunk and disorderly and attempting to break into
Annie Jackson's house in West-street, resisting tho
police and afterwards breaking a water bucket in her
cell. Fined $10, and in default "?ent up" for ten
days.
Jacob Butler, a young hopeful of sable hue, in his
fourteenth summer, was sent to tbe House of Correc?
tion for thirty days for stealing a pair of shoes aid
for vagrancy.
Henry Spri^ison, white, lodged for being under the
influen?a of liquor and sleeping in the street, at the
coi-.er of Meeting streets.

THE MVBBEB OF BEX. JOXES.
The Coroner's jury rendered their verdict
yesterday in the case of Ben. Jones ?colored), who
was hilled, on Sunday night, in Calhoun-street
Ihe inquest lasted the greater part of three days.
?nd the jury, which consisted exclusively of colored
men, appearod to bc most anxious to sire ihe truth
Iron the testimony which was brought before them.
The evidonce in thc case may be summed up as
follows:
On sunday last ihe murdered man, with Trince
Prioleau, Stephen Jones and James Jenkins, ali of
them coL red, were io company together, and at
about 7 P. M., started out to go to the West Poiut
Hills. After they had gone some distance two whits j
men pass ed Prioleau, who bad dropped behind, and
Prioleau heard Ste) hen Joues call out twice to Ben
Jones to go on home. Prioleau turned to look, and
saw the two white men standing up, and saw Ben
Jone.:, who was in front of them, mu off
the sidewalk, holding bia head down. Piioleau
ran up and asked the white men what was the mat?
ter, and asked one of them whether he knocked

the a flii marivo, and added that he would knock thc
sp eaker, Trioleau, wnothen said, "Ko you can't."
The white man, when some moro words had passed,
drew a knife and made at Prioleau. who ran tc the
middle of the street. Prioleau then returned to the
sidewalk and found that Ben Jones was dead. Prio?
leau did not witness the fatal blow, but could recog?
nize the white man who told him that he had struck
Jones. Jas. Jenkins was walting ahead of Bou Jones,
and beard some one say, "By God, I will not move for
you;" and another person say, "Well, I will not
move for you.'- Directly afler, Jerkins hoard Ben
Jones say, "Oh, Lord!" He turned bael; at once
and taught Jones, who had then been cu'. Stephen
Jones, who was one of th? party, heard Ben Jones
cry out "Oh, Lord," and when he turned met Prince
Prioleau running towards him (thc witness); he saw
three or four white men, who were walking slowly,
and did not disturb bim ; a few minutes later. Pi ince
came up with some bri'-ks in his hand and called
Ben, when witness (Stephen Jones) Faid, "Bow can
you call Beu when he is dead." Princo then ran off.
This witness did not Fee Prince talking to any white
men, nor any boys speaking to him. nor hear any per?
son threaten him, nor did Prince tell witness that Ben
had been ptabbed by a white man when he t Prince)
came up with tbo blicks in his hand; witness did
hear Prince tell Lieutenant Hendricks so after the
body had been carried to tho Louse of the witness.
Thomss Hafferty. wbo resides at No. 73 Calhoun
street, gave the following important testimony:
I was in Calhouu-st'cet at or about seven o'clock
P. M. on the 24th January, 1869, between Middle and
Wall streets, in company with hi ey Morgan, John
King, John Burke,-Armstrong, and I beard
James Beeves suv to a colored mau that it he could
not walk the streets uit'uou. b.ing troubled, that bo
would fix somebody: said Beeves had a knife in his
hand at the time, and I saw h m put it into thc back
of his tants; George Murray went up to him aud
asked bim to come hrnie; tooti him by thc baud
and carried bim to his (Aiurray's) house; whou
Beeves got lo the house he asked if this was. Mrs.
Hurray'*; SToe one eaid yes, and he went
in; I was alongside ol Beeves as ho was
going to Mis. Murray's house, and th?re wa*
a crowd alocg also; I then went to where tho man
was lying, but could not see him, there being such a
crowd around him; heard some persons sing out,
"carry t im to tho doctor;" I h-a-d Beeves say ?she
was going to Mis. Murray's. "I killel," and aomi

bitch." I heard Beeves say to Prince i'rio.eau (col?
ored!, -you son of a bitch i'll give it io you." und I

ness said:
The colored man cursed Reeve?, the colored man
having a brick in his hand; Jami a Reeves cursed thc
colored man, saying "I'll cut you, too;" thc colored
man then rtru off, but before the colored mau ran iff
I saw Reeves pick up a kui le. which was on the pave?
ment, and make two or thr< c efforts to cut lim (thc
colored man) with thc said knife.

Jones came to his death by a wound Inflicted in thc
loft breast with a sharp instrument in the bond or
hands of James -T. Reeves, in Calhoun-steet, on Sun
day eight, thc 24th Jaman-, J869, about half-past
seven o'clock; and that Michael Byrne vas accessory
to the killing."

On Tuesday morning, between four and rive
o'clock, while Mr. and Mis. Gcorgu Martin, living at
No. IT Ann-stroet; were lying in bed, Mrs. Martin,
who happened to bo awake, saw two colored men ou?
ter the window of her chamber trova the piazza.
Mrs. Martin lay perfectly quiot and tried to rouse
her husband, who was sound asleep. One of tho
burglars lemained in the caamber, while
the other one wont into tho adjoining
room. 1 bo one who remained in tho chamber Went
towards the bed, and while he lowered tho covering
and felt under the pi.low, had a large butcher's
knife in bia band, which he hold over Mr. Marun.
Mrs. Marin made no sign, but saw all that went on.
When thc bnrglar left tho bed, bc placed tho km fe in
his teeth, and walked about the room, searching thc
drawers, frc m nhl h he tonk thirty-five dollars in
greenbacks and five dollars in gold, in one dollar
pieces. He then went out and joined his companion,
who was operating In the next room. After awhile
he returned, and agaiu approached iho bedside of
Mr. Martni, and elevated the huge kuife over him.
Mrs. Marlin, with great coolness and courage, then
jumped up and seized an artillery sword near tho
bod, and whilo thu burglar's arm was cilcuJed over
her sleeping husbar.d, struck the burglar a terribie
blow, which caused tho tuite to tall from hu prasp.

cut on the head, and ashs face swung back, she gave
