A. Middleton, at Mid wa;, in Barnwell District, was
deatro- el by fire on Saturday afternoon last. The

families of Mr. Lawton and of a brother of Ur. Mid

Fortunately, only a .i.uu wind was stirring and the

dleton returns his thanks to the white and colored

populous hotel has passed into the hands and man?
agement of Mr, fe. H. Jackson, cf this city. It is
now tweaty years ?inco Mr. Jackson arrived in ou:
city from his native hills of Vermont, a stranger
among us. without family connections or friends.

afford encouragement lo all who look forward for a

ni$. Such is the meed Mr. Jackson has earned.

gation yesterday before the coroner. In the t
noon a young mon by the name of J. Q Reeves,
resides in Marsh-street, w s arrested in Broad-st
in rooms over thc internal revenue office, occu
by his sister, on the charge of being the perpeh
of the deed.
A multitude of reports were afloat y es teni cy i

authentic has yet transpired. Some excitement
created by the arrest of parties as witnesses, am
suspicion of complicity in thc crime, but thc ruc
in regard to these arrests were greatly exaggcra

Miss Annie Deland made her first appearance

able wardrobe. She created a marked sensation I
evening, and we expect to sse full hontes duri
her btief engagement, which is limited to

Mr. Sutton as "a p.rtyby the name of Johnst
was excellent, and rendered full Justice to tho cl
acter. Messrs. Grey. Fox and Reese aro worthy
commend ition. Mrs. Harrison and Rettte Gray,
their varied characters, surpassed their prarie
efforts.

astonishment, hardly any ono was there.
Now. I know nothing of Mr. Gilbert, nor decs it
