IDENTIFICATION OF A SWINDLER.-Tho Atlanta papers state that persons havo arrived there who have identified tli em an Perkins, ahas Grant, arrested by Cap'ain Edwatd Muiphy on the 28th ult., as tho man who made a run on tbs First National Bank of Charleston in November, 1867, and on a Savannah bank in March, 1863, for one thousand dollars, and on a Kansas City bank i or three thousand dollars. THE POMAUIA NURSERY.-A catalogue of the trees and plants grown at tho Pomaria Nursery, near Pomaria, on the Green ville aud Columbia Railroad, shows it to bo tho mo>t extensive affair ot tho kind in this state, and one of the most extensivo in the South. Tho proprietor, Mr. Wm. Rummer, invites visitors to his Louee, and will send a carriage for them to the railroad depot if notified in time. The catologue, a large pamphlet, is from tho press of Mr. J. W, McMillan, Hayue-streot, and ls an excellent specimen of job printing. ANNUAL CONFERENCE AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH.-Tho annual conference of this church met on saturday last at Emanuel Church, Calhoun-streot, Bishop J. M. Brown presiding. The roU was called and a quorum was found present^ Divine service W.;B conducted by the presiding bishop. About seventy-five ministers answered to their name. The following conni it tees wero un? pointed: On Public Worship, Education, Missions, Wilberforce University, Boo_ Concern, Temperance, Sabbath Schools, Memoirs, Circuit?, Letters and Pe? titions, Postofflcc, Admission and Orders, lhere was entire harmony throughout the proceedings. FIREMEN'S PLATFORM_As some considera? ble interest is felt in this city in reference to fire? men's apparatus, we dis oct attention to a recent in? vention in Providence, Rho .o leland. It is called the "firemen's platform," ls mounted on a truck, and conecta of three cylindiical sections which shut within each other like telescope elides, and can bo elevated into a tower fifty foot higb, wherewith to reaoh the upper stories of a burning building whore a ladder is hardly available. This trjok can be inclined to an angle of thirty degrees, so as to reaoh the upper stories of a building when thoso be? low are in flames. The sections are constructed of light, cor centric rings of wroughtiron, so that the whole apparatus weighs only thirty three hundred pounds. The walls aro divided by rounds, which thus form ladder.'. A NEW THEATRE.-Would it not be better for our German friends, who propose to erect a theatre and concert ball on tho lot at the corner of George and Meeting streets, to negotiate with the Trustees of tho South Carolina Institute and build on their lot, which is mont eligbly located, being near all tho hotels, on the line of the street railway and on a wide and popular thoroughfare. 'J ho trustees wonld, doubtless be willing to lease the lot for a long term of years in consideration of the erec? tion of a building upon it, which they would be al? lowed to use for then* annual meetings, Ac. Ibis would be a good arrangement for both parties, and it might advantageously bo taken into consideration, To say nothing of miny other advantages, avoiding the necessity cf the purchasing of a site for the new theatre is a very important item which tbo?e who have the matter in contemplation will not overlook. VOTE FOR THE MEDAL.-The voto for the gold medal, at tbo Theatre, on Saturday, stood, for the 2Etna 4 ; Marion 3 ; Stonewall 7 ; Hook and Ladder No. 2,1 ; Vigilant 13 ; Phoenix 13 ; German 1 ; Pioneer 34, and tho Washington 59. The count? ing was done by a committee, consisting of M. H. Nathan, Esq., chief, and assistants R. M. Alexander, Esq., and F. L. O'Neill. Esq. The presentation was mado by Mr. J. P. Sutton, stago manager of tho com puny, and received by Mr. Lawrence Cavanagh of tho Washington, Great chesruig followed tho presentation of tho jewel, which i* very similar in shape and design to the testimonial (riven to Mr. E D. Euston, when he retired from tho presidency of tho "Pioneer," at the . last anniversa-.-y. JAMES AUGUSTUS BLACK, ESQ.-From the Abbeville Press, w<s gather tho following particulars rolstive to the Ufo of James Augustus Black. Esq., who died in Columbia on the 19th instant. He was of a distinguished Revolutionary ancestry, a grand? son of Joseph Black, for many years a State oonator from Abbeville, and ono of a numerous fami'y long identified witb the district and State. Enjoying tbe advantages of an excellent early education, he studied jaw in the office of Chancellor Caldwell, of Columbia* and soon found employment in the Secretary of State's office. His familiarity with the records of that effico led to his selection as the agent of the State in prosecuting its Revolutionary claims ag dust the General Government, and but for the breaking out of the war those claims would have been rolly adjusted. Buring the war he was elected to the ?oma? of Comptroller-General. Losing in the general wreck his omeo and his books, he returned to his nativo district to repair hts chattered fortuno-, and for the past twelve months ho resided ia Abbeville, as general assignee in bankruptcy. He had bean recently elected, as a Democrat, to the State Legisla? ture, but died before taking his seat.
