THE FBANBXJN-STREET COLORED SCHOOL.-At
the Convention of the Episcopal Cnurch in homh
Carolina in February, 1866, a committee, consisting
of the Rev. C. C. Piiickncy, Rev. C. P. Gadsden, Rev.
A. Toomer Porter, Mr. Trenholm. Mr. Bee, and Mr.
C. L. Kerrison, waa appointed to look after the reli?
gious and educational interest of the colored people
in this State in connection with the church. 1 hoir
earnest and unwearied efforts resulted in the pur?
chase of the building formerly used as the United
States Marine Hospital, and lu having it properly
furnished with snitaolo school furniture Not having
funds wherewith to carry on the school, they then
applied to the Proles tint Episcopal Freedmen's
Commission, established by the General Convention
of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United
States of America, to Bupply the w-emviy teachers;
to send the principal from the North to organise
and carry on the work. This was at once done, and
on July nine, 1867, the school was opened with a
principal and four assistant teachers, and soon after
increased to twolve, all natives of this city. The
average number of pupils enrolled for the school io
the years 1867 ead '68 was six hundred i>nd twenty .

improvement in regularity of attendanoy, genersl
