houses, &c. The Galaxy has steadily hold tho high
position which it gained upon ontoring the broad
field of periodical literature, and popularity has
oaused no lessoning of its interest and value. This
is, perhaps, the main sec rc!, cf its now assured suc?
cess; while it also justifies tho belief that the now
volume just begun will bo oven moro valuable than
any of its prcdecossois.
ALMANACS.-We uavo received a copy of the
"Tribune" Almanac for tho current year. It is filled
with a fund of infcrmutlon. and is valuable as a book
of reference, not only to politicians but to newspa?
permen. UH mont important feature is its election
returns. The figures, in nearly every case, were
taken from the official records on filo in the offices of
thc various secret".ric? of Slate. It contains com?
plete county returns of tho volo for President, and
tho detailed vote for all tho Governors and members
of Congross chosen in 1809.
We have also received thc "World" Almanac and
the "Democratic" Almanac, for 1809, both of which
should be well nigh indispensable to tho student of
public affairs.
BAMIE.-This new textilo plant is drawing
more attention than any novelty presented to South?
ern cultivators cinco the war. A number of planta?
tions in Louisiana and Mississippi are this year de?
voted to ita culture, as they iormerlv were to cotton.
It has one Fignal advantage over cotton-it can be
harvested and handled by machinery. *
Ramie belongs to the nettle family; tho Hot or
fibre, usad for cloth, is the inside bark, obtained, as
flax is, by breaking or otherwise getting rid of the
stalk. It yields two or three times as mush as cot?
ton per acre, and requires loss cultivation. When
properly handled, the fibre ls of a lustrous white
color, a little rough to tho touch. The cloth mide
from it bas a rich, silky hue, and lasts a long time.
It does not give a cloth agreeable to the touch, as
cotton OT silk, but for all outside fabrics, and especi?
ally for muslins, it is greatly supe:ior to either cot?
ton or linen. At present it sells in London for sixty
cents a pound. To engage in raising ramie, a South?
ern farmer needs enly t o obtain the cuttings, and, at
harvest, a machins for cleaning the fibre, which will
cost about (225.

City Council held an extra moot in? last night
to consider the subject of tho manden??*.
Present-Ths Mayor, Aldermon Geddings, Potter,
Ounniugham, Lindstrom, Adams, Dorcof, Wall, Ol?
ney. Honour, Willdon, Voigt, Moora and Marshall.
Ihe Mayor reported that he had held a consulta?
tion with the City Attorney, and tho latter had pre?
pared a declaration of tho election and a return to
the writ
Tho declaration sots forth the number of votes
cast for Mayor and Aldermen at the election held on
December 10, from which it appears that Gilbert
Pillsbury and his ttcktt of Aldermen received the
largest number of votes cast.
The return recites tho declaration already rondo by
Council, and that the election bad bueu contested
and declared illegal and void.
Alderman Adams proposed to offer a substitute for
the return, which ocoaiioned considerable discus?
sion, and bo was finally rule! out of order and not
allowad to road h's substituto. Ho endeavored af?
terwards to bring lt in as part ot his argument against
tba a-loptlon of the proposed return, but failed. The
substitute, which was not road in Council, recited
thoolcctton of Mr. Pillsbury and his Aldermen, and
tho decisien of the Supremo Court, and concluded
with Ihe following resolution :
Be it Resolve*, That this board do at onco declaro
tho ?1 ectlou for Mayor wnd Aldermon ol'tho O'ty of
charleston, held on the 10th day ot November, A. U.
1868, and that tho persona as nfo cs;iid, having re?
ceived the highest number of votes at said election,
be admitted to their peats as soon as they shall ham
duly qualified, bv taking the oath of office ns Mayor
and Aldermen of the City of Charleston.
Tho Mayor expressed his opinion that Alderman
Adams not boin? a party to the suit, could not pro?
perly make suggestions as to the course to be pur?
sued by those who were; and this opinion was sus?
tained by a large majority of tho Aldermen preseut.
Aldorman Adams thon offered hts resignation,
which was accepted. Ills lettor of resignation states
that although it was to bc regretted that somo irreg?
ularities had occurred iu tho recent city election, yot
ho believed that tho eli ellon of Mr. Pillsbury was in
accordance with the wishes of tho majority of tho
voting population ; and as tho Supreme Court had
docidod against tho action of the presont counsel in
re ard to thc election, ho did not feel justified iu
longer holding his seat in opposition to the claimp of
those whom he thought rightfully elected.
On mut on of Alderman Whilden, the Mayor was
authorized to sign the declaration on bohalf of tho
Council.
On motion of Alderm"" Whilden, the return wa?
handed round for signatures. It was B'gued by all
presont ex'opt Alderman Adams.
The claim of Mr. McDonald for paving Markel
strott was coled up. Fome discussion was occa?
sioned by the fact that tho city Civil Engineer had
signed two claims for tho same work for different
amounts. Tho Civil Engineer explained that his
first estimate of the work was made by a plat of Colo?
nel Branch, and the second was made by his own
survey.
On motion of Aldorman Olnoy, tho claim was
postponed for fur hor consideration.
On mot on of Aldorman Godding*, it was resolved
that tho Committee on Streets c.m-e the new paving
on East Bay aud Broid streets as well as the asphal
tum pavements to be carefully measured, and report
the result to Council as soon as possible.

have refused to give the required information, the fol?

ITHE KOBBERY AT FLORENCE.-Mr. Albert
Baruch, of Florence, whose storo was lately robbed
of about $100 wtsrth of goods, has, with two friends,
tracked the burglars successfully, and recovered
about one-third of tho stolen property. The house
in which it was found was inhabited by three ne?
groes, Robert Manuel, Charles Menard son and Peter
Murdoch, for whose apprehension a reward is offer?
ed . Some goods were found in the house whi.-h
were stolen from the store of Mr. Cogs hall, about one
year ago, also some goods belonging to Mr. Martin,
of Florence, who was robbed lihou', nine months
ago, as well as some goods which hnvo not t-een
identified. A large quantity ol burglars* tools and
falso kev s waa louud. The three negroes, who bore
a very bad character, fired on Mr. Barn oh and bia
companions as soon as they wore soon and made
t heir c.-cape.

A TESTIMONIAL.-Last evening ibero was a meeting
of Squid No. 8, of tho Visitant, Fire Company, at tho
hall, State-street, for th.* purpose of presan nug their
lato leader and director, F. L. O'Neill, Esq., who has
lately neon elected Tiurd Assistant Cbief of (he Board
