GUARDIAN MUTUAL LIFE INSURANCE COM? PANY.-This is then trae of a flourishing New York ufo insurance company wjich has adopted several new features into cs plan. By a recent enaclment of the Lojieluture ofthe State cf Nev York, the charter of the company na? been so altered that the entire profit" uf the com? pany will be returned to the poli -y holders. The non? forfeitable principle is applied to all its premiums, and is embodied ia tho written poUcy. L~\r? cr credits in anticipation of dividends ore granted to tho amount of one-third ol e ich annual premium, and such loans are indorsed upon the policy, no notes being required. It has now assets to the amount of $1,500,000, and that amount is rapidly in? creasing. Mr. Walton H. Peckham, of New York, ? tho Pre sidon t, and the list of d'teetora contains some of the best names iu business in th's country. Mr. G. A. Fudi :kar, the superintendent, is at present in Savannah, having passed through this city a few days ago. Mr. Geo. Keim, the general agent for this ??tate, and air. K. Issertel, the agent for ? har .'es ton, are popular and active men, and will doubtless ra? pidly advance the Interests of the company. Dr. ileentsjerna, the exam ming physician, is a resident of this city, and ha ; his omeo io Hosel-street near the Postoffice. ? -. THE CHARLESTON HOTEL.-TO say that the Charleston Hotel is the hindfomest hotel in the eily would be doing injustice to its magnifie jut pro? portions and imposing appearance. It is the hand? somest hotel in the South, and its appearance will com?ate favorably with that of any hotel of the same size in any of the large Northern cities. The men who built lt were Cbarlestonlans, and they were determined to make it worthy cf the name it was destined to be ir, and OVy bucccclcd. Charles? ton may well be proud ot thc Charleston Hotel. 1 or many years now it has represented her hospitality axdher cntorpriic, anl hos piven to thousands of strangers their most .a<tlntj impressions of thc city, and tho hundreds of Northerners cow daily passing through the city ott prospo tin;: tour? on pleasure trips form much higher o< luk nj cf ihe wealth ard importance (fCuoi lea.on on accaunt of its having such a splendid hotot, than they would if they were compelled to stay a a second or third class house. It is therefore ol tho greatest importance to tho city (hat the Ct aries ton Hotel should bp in thc hands of a compele::t manager, for lt is not every man who can keep on hotel, ar.d the a-r fame and reputation of the city might suflur by Ita principal hotel falling into <be hands of on inornpe'ent j creon. On this account some anxiety h s been felt in tbe communi? ty to knywwho would sueco d Major Horh-ch. lhat amie y ls relieved this morning by the announce? ment that Mr. E. H. Jackson ha? assumed the man? agement. Mr. Jacksau is well kuown as aa enter? prising and competent business man, and there can bo no doubt that uuder bis supt rintendenee the "Charleston" wiR ever maintain and improve its well merited reputation as a tlrst-class hotel. COTTON CHANGING ltourB.-Wo take tho fol? lowing paragraph from tho Huntsville (Ala.) Demo? crat: A gentleman in'ormsut. that North Alabama cot -ton is beginning to cbaueo ita toute toNewYotk from the i ai.road via cinei i.n ni to the rail and sea route via < h; r e-stou. 'Ihe reason of this chango is plainly indicated in the following rates of freight on tko several routes: ?be Deicht via Cinc?ina i, we understand, ia $1 75 vor 100 poonda, and via Norfolk SI 6b, and via Char eston il 42. Other things being equal, the cheape t route is sure to take the freight The route via Cincinnati is til rail; to Norfolk and Charleston, io- pee ti ve ly, all ri', and thence to New York by steamer.-. If the railroads on tho Northern route de not re-dace their schedules, Charleston will bear off thc palm. We may add teat large qaart'ties of freight are being shipped daily irom Ne * York to Memphis and other points in the Wost by way of Charleston. BULLING COTTON.-Tho editor of tho New? berry Herald gives tho fo lowinc live.y sketch of the exploits of a party of Newberrians: Arriving in Charleston, those irrepressible New? berry bulls went among the bears and f ught it out to the tone of SI5.Ot 0 or i2U.e00, purchasing in lots, over a thousand bales, and dis osing of thu samo to? gether with previous transactions, at a premium of from ten to eighteen do.lars per bate. One lot pur? chased was a rise of fcurhui.dio i bales. '1 ho Charles? ton cotton marke' on bairn day afternoon was the most excited that we had seen ba a lone time. Many OT the sales we: c ctfcc?ed wlihout samples. The mar? ket closed that night in a jubilee-both buyers and sellers satisfied-tho former with a cert in prospect of a farther rise, and the Latter with their successes. Much of the cotton bought by Newberry was from the "jaegers." and to tlum resold. That's the way to buy-when the market's a li t tie. dull, at aU events ere the staple has reached its maximum, for after? wards somebody'll be hurt. Bry when you can make a profit, bny largely, create an excitement, and then "push Ulinga." ACKNOWLEDGEMENT.-The thanks of THE NEWS aro due to the Spartanburg and Union Rail? road for papers received. TEE THEATRE.-There was an excellent house last evening to witness thc "Colleen Bawn." The audience were decidedly pleased with the actng and gave it euthus'as'ic i eception. To-uight is the honeflt of Harry Watkins, when thc Iiish drama of "Kathleen Mavourneen" wiU be given with appro? priate scenic accomeaiiinieut3. CLUBS AND STABS.-Thc tallowing is thc Guardhouse docket for January 14 : Nat Gadsden, lcdgod tor larceny of hose from thc steamer Volunteer, on Fraser's whan. Referred tu magistrate. James Mitchell and Crejar Bennett, twj youths of color, we-e arrcs'cd lor cot'on stealing yesterday by oiheer Moses Levy, of the detective loree, ami lodged tn ihe Guardhouse, and subsequently were refer.od to the detective olHce tor examination. The ce ton was recovered. Joshua Robinson and Wilson Goodwin, colored, lodged tor ste ?Uns e. coat frcm Jacob C. G:eeu, color? ed, in Bennett s Mill yard. Six fowis brought to Guardhouse, supposed to have been stolen. /.bra hum Hamilton, lodged for trespassing on premises in College-street. HOTEL ABBIVALS-January 14. -Factlion HoUl.-k L Bames, New York; F C FUbbnrne, robt Fhhbume, Eantowles; H H Ritter, Portlaud, Me; WT McKewn, Orangebuig; Jam s Claffy, Colum? bia, S C. Charleston Hotel.-H JUlBon, New York; F J Howe, city; Thos E Waiker, R C Robson, Atl ,uta; Mrs Hen? derson and daughter, Aiken ; L Weil, Philadelphia ; B J Barnett, bautee; Wm Moue, USA; M Wackerl and lady, Chester; E B Stoddard city; J Buchheit and servant, Baltimore; Arthur Bell, New York; Wm Weston, Richland; Jamos Chesnut, Florida; W H Dowdy, richland; Hon M P Wilder, RoU Manning, Boston; Geo Eilwatger, F Barry, Rochrster, N Y; R T Pierce, New York; Thomas ?really, Uo3tcn; C C White and wife, New York; D C Wilson, Beaufort; L Myers, New York. THE PEOPOSED POLICE SYSTEM.-Thc Polic? bill which has been introduced into Council has some capital it atures, sud some that arc highly ob? jectionable. Among the first may bc enumerated tho great reduction iu tha expense of the force to tho city, thc high qualifications required for ti i/o liceman, the demand of a ceitiflcat; lrom thrc; re? sponsible citiVns. acd tho privilege allowcl to busi? ness men emplojinjj a private watchman who shall have tho same authority a3 a policeman. On thc other h md thc idea of making a sticet inspictor out of the captain ol police and fire marshals out of the lieutenants, is rather i-repostorcus. 'the legiti? mate duties o? police c flicers. with tho additional work of detectives is sufllciently onerous without piling on th it of separate , and entirely distinct offices. The reduction of the salariej ol the officers is another objection. To obtain men competent to do tho work assigned by this bill, or even the regu? lar polico duty now shired by double thc number of oin cet a, a h'g'ier salary must be offered. A good clerk in a ro.ail dry goods store, in King-street, can make SI 200 a year, and it is absurd to supposo that a man with the brains atm tnergy necessary to make a co mpetent captain of police will work for tte sa n,c cmount. But, perhaps, the most objec? tionable feature cf thc whole bill is, probably, thc provisiou fer employing fifty men exclusively for night duty. Obey will do sorte other work in thc day, and bc sleeping on their posts at Light. It would bo better tar to add twenty-five to thc regular force, lt wou'd then be more competent and inau ug? ble, and cf course mo e efficient. INSTALLATION OF THE NEW PBESIDENT OF 7HE -ETNA STEAM FIRE ENGINE COMPANY.-Thc regular monthly meeting of tho ?tna Steim Firo Engine Comiany took place at their ball last evening. A fur the dispatch of the business of the evening, a com? mit tee, consisting oi L S. K. Ellsworth (tho oldest membor of tho company). J. B. Nixon, J. T. Wilson, I. B. Forbes and T. J L70JD*, was appo-ntcd to wait upon Maier E. Willis, wbo had been recently chosen to preside over thc company, and conduct him to the hall. After the I.pee of a few minutes they re? turned with the new ires'dent, whose entrance was the signal for long, loud and repeated cheers, 'ihe chairman of the committee introduced him to the company and the retiring president. Mr. J. A. Quackenbusb, who received him in generous terms, and congratulated him on his el vatlon to the posi? tion ho was about to assume. He then st'- ted to him the conditio n of the company, and closed wiih a warm and complimentary welcom- Major Willis replied in eloquent and grateful terms, thanked them for the selection of him as their president, and be gged to assure them that he wor.ld always" serve them to the very best of his energy and ability, and further, as far as it would Ec in bis power, thc n ishes and interests of the company. Great applause fol? lowed the extremely pertinent remarks of the new president, and, after it had subsided, the folding doors of the ball were thrown open, and a floo colla? tion was displayed, to which ample justice was done. Speeches were made by tho retiring president and the one elect, the representative of THE NEWS, other invited guests, and members of other organizations. The evening was most agreeably passed. W. J. HERIOT, Secretary. January 7 12 JOST THE MACHINE, CALLED MAN, IS A very complicated and delic ite ono, and is mo re ha? ble to get out of order, and much more difficult to repair, than any combination of wheels and cranks and levers rnado by the hands of man. AS a rule, it is tinkered too much, and badly tinkered at that. It is orton calcmelized, narcnt'xed, depleted, and oth? erwise misused, when all that it really needs is a wholesome tonic and restorative like Hos PETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS to put it in proper trim and keep ii so. The stomach is shamefully maltreated. In ihe firs t place, tho food which its juices arc in? tended to dissolve, is too frequently thrown into it hastily, and in a half-masticated condition, in which state tho gastric acid cannot properly act upon iL The result in dyspepsia. Thoa comes tho doctor, and. finding thc digestiv? organs weak and the bow? els inert, he prece ads to weaken and paralyze still moro with drastic purgativos. Thosa tending-a? they always do-to produce a salutary chauge, ho tells thc invalid that medical science can do no more for him. This, with all duo dclorenco, is a iu istake one of those mistakes which Talleyrand said wore tautamouiit to crim-s. What ihe dyspeptic needs ie invigoration. Strengthen tho stomach with HOS TETTER'S BIT i ERS, aud thc stomao'.i will strength? en every o ber part of the human machine, and make it, in common parlance, as go.^l as new. Upon thc state of the digestion depend?, Ina measure, thc condition of the whole system. Now, the Ritters arc tho most admirable toni- known. They consist of the finest vegetable iuvigorants anl restoratives, combined with on uuadultcrato I stimulant. Ibo dyspeptic needs nothing else- to effect a cure, except a light, nutritious diet, and a fair ann mt of u\er elsc. Even in the absence of these last mentioned accessories, the tonic and alterative prop-Tiios of the prepaiation will wo k wonders, enabling thc dyspeptic to digest inferior fare with campara ti ve ease, and to maintain a good habit of body, in spite of the drawbacks of a sedentary occupation.
