They will .probably arrive here to-day on their way to Aiken. g THE EUROPEAN MAILS.-Owing to thc non 'arrival of the steamar Erna, the European mails which were to have been dispatched from New York on Saturday, were detained until to-day, when they will go forward by the Hamburg-American steamer AUemanta. In no previous season has bad weather on the Atlantic so seriously interrupted mail com' raunicaiioD. BRAZILIAN SILK COTTON.-Turee bales of a new description of cotton, grown from the seed of the Brazilian silk cotton, has been received by W. M. Lawton, Esq., fictor, Boyce k Co.* s wharves, V from Mr. J. Ivcrson, wu s resldos near Macon, Ga., and by whom it was cult?vala J. The staple is good with a slight yellow tinge, and with a remarkably soft and silky iceling. We ore informed that cotton of this description is ia demand in France for the tue of silk manufacturers. THE HOMESTEAD ACT.-It has been held by T. J. K. Dargan, Esq., one of the magistrates for Williamsburg County, that the recent act of the Legislature, commonly known as the Homestead sot, is in conflict with the Constitution of the United States, so far as lt artemptB to operate upon contracts entered into prior to the date of the Constitution of South Carolina, aud of the oct itself, and therefore as to such contracts void. The case in which the decision was rendered arose under the Attachment oct, and we understand that an appeal has been taara in the case. Thc establishment of the firm was first op ened at the southeast corner of Meeting and Wentworth streets, where it continued to be kept undi the increasing demands cf their business com? pelled the p roprietors to erect a new building at tho northeast corner of Meeting and Cumberland streets, into which they moved in November last. The first or ground floor is divided into two stores, one with thc entrance* on Meeting-street, wh ch is used as a salesroom, and to hold the stock of smaller articles; and ono with an entrance on C timberland-street, which is used as a warehouse for steam engines, machinery ai d other heavy stock. The firm of Cameron, Bartley & Co. is the ouly one that makes railroad, i teinibua: and mill supplies a specialty, and their tusiness ls consequently very extensive and their stock very large. On their iron rack alone they have two hundred aud fifty lons of bar iron and steel and iron plate. They keep always on hand steam eurr-nes, circular, saw and grist mills, aud also sperm lard and coal oil, gum and leather belt? ing, and all other arti .les needod to keep machinery runnbag and In good order. Ihe phosphato compa? nies, now multiplying so fast in our city, can find here everything in the way of michinery and ma? chine supplies that is necessary to put their mines and manufactories in writing order; and planters, millors. and all others requiring machinery, will find it to their advantage to send their orders to Messrs. Camar?n, Barkley i: Co. The firm desire to extend their business in every way, and expect and ore prepared to do so. The buildings aro erected with a view to enlargement, and the waUs are sufflcicnUy thick and strong to stand thu weight ol several additional stories. CATHOLIC INSHTOTE.-The anniversary of the above Society was celebrated last evening, at the Catholic Institute Hall, No. 263 Eiag-street. There was a full attendance of member.- present, and the interest manifested by all augurs well for the future prosperity of the institution. We wero pleased to notice the preseuce of Bt. Bev. Bishhps Lynch and Pe rs co, and several of the olergy. After tho regular business was transacted, tho president, Bernard O'Neill, Esq., invited Bt. Rev. Dr. Lynch to address the meeting. Da compliance, the Rt Rev. Bishop expressed his satisfaction at the flourishing condition of the Carb? olic Institute, and was pleased to note tho advan? tages which it afforded its members in giving them a healthy and pure literature, whereby those grand principles of Catholic conservatism would instil themselves into their minds, surrounded as they were with the fanaticism prevalent at the present day, which is sapping the foundation of social order. He recommended young and old to make it, next to tbe family circle, a place of resort. The institute then resolved itself into a committee of the whole, and requested Rt. Rev.
