STRIKE ON THE RICE PLANTATIONS, COOPEE RrvfiB.-The laborers in the rice fleWs on the Cooper River have struck for one-half of the crop, instead of j one-thud allowed under the arrangement of the apast season. THE UNITED STATES CODET.-The grand juries attending on this court have been disco arged until the hist Monday in February, at which time the Dis? trict Attorney, D. T. THE THEATRE.-There was a full house at the theatre last evening to witness the domestic drama of Oae Lilly of Killarney, whica waa perform? ed by the versatile an d accomplished Mr. and Mrs. Watkins, assisted hy the talented members of the Gilbert Troupe. The laughable farce, "To Obligo Benson," created considerable mirth. To-night wlU be performed the favorite drama, entitled "the Hid? den Hand, or Virginia as it Was." The dramatiza? tion is by Mr. Harry Watkins. THE UNITARIAN PULPIT.-The Rev. R. P. Cutler, of i rocklyn, late of San Francisco, Califor? nia, is filling thi3 pulpit to the great satisfaction of J the congregation. PHILIP'S CHURCH.-Mr. T. D. Ruddock has been elected organist of St. Philip's Church, and will take charge os soon as the new organ is completed. Mr. Ruddock is an accom? plished musician, and has had long experience as an organist. He is moreover a pious man, and a better selection could not have be-on made. The jdelay in the completion of the organ has been occa. sioned by tho sickness of the builder, "ir. Baker, who is still unable to continue the work. A NARROW ESCAPE. -Yesterday, while two of | the employees of Hr. C. Graveloy, corner of East Bay and Boyce's Wharf, were engaged in drawing up some goods from the lower i o the upper story of his establishment, a large and weighty cog-wheel fell from t?e top of the fall, carrying everything it came in contact with, and tna'ly bur; lng itself in the cel? lar beneath. Two young gentlemen below, engaged in hauling up tho goods, miraculously escaped being crushed to death, as the rog-wbeel fell between them, within a few inches of their heads. REV. DR. HICKS.-Yesterday the vestry of Dr. Bachman's church called on Dr. Hicks, and ten dered him the assistant pastorship of the church. He hf.s informally intimated on acceptance of the invitation, and tho vestry will call on him again, to? day, to 1'iarn his final decision in the matter. On next Sabbath, by special request of Dr. Bachman, he will preach a sermon appropriate to the fifty-fourth anniversary of his pastoral cou-iection with the con? gregation. This will prevent Dr. Hicks making the ; contemplated visit to Florida with Bishop Wight mi a. y -. AFFRAY U? KINO-STREET.-Yesterday after? noon. Officer Lafayette C. Wclfe, whilo trying to serve a magistrate's warrant on a mon by the name of Emanuel, at the house of Dr. Collins, King-street, near Morris, was resisted by Coll ins, and a fight en -sued, in which Wolfe was roughly handled. Wolfe appealed to the officer of the C^er Guardhouse for a policeman to assist him in c. .-dug out his dury, but was refused. Wolfe finally sought assistance at tho Lowei Guardhouse, where a sufficient force was furnished him. Emanuel was taken in custody, but up to a late hour last night thc policemen were still hunting for Dr. Collins. THE WEEK OF PRATER.-TWO religious ser? vices were held yesterday?-ono in tho afternoon, at the Circular Church, and the other in the evening, at the Citadel Square Church. Both were well at? tended and very interesting. Three clergymen par? ticipated in the afternoon sorvico. At night, Bev. Mr. Wightman presided. Appropriate and earnest addresses were made by Rev. J. T. Wightman and Bev. C. P. Gadsden, and prayer was offered by Rev. Dr. Winkler and Rev. W. H. Adams. Tho meet? ings of this weet of prayer continue to grow in IL tt>rest. Io-night thc meeting is ih the Luthetan Church, Wentworth-stroet-Rev. Mr. Bowman's; and the subject, "Family Religion and the Converatoa of the Young."
