LAST DAY-CLOSING SCENES.
Addresses by Chancellor Lcsesnc, General
-James Simons, General AV. G. DcSaus
sure and flou. James B, 1'ampbcll.
Yesterday was the last day of the Ccurt or Equity,
bi; Honor Chancellor Lcsosne presiding. Alter the
business ofthe court had been disposed of, ibore
was a large meeting of the bar, to testify their appre?
ciation ot tho services of the Chancellor during his
official term. The venerable ex-Chief Ju=tic? Dun?
kin, who has adom?d tho equity bench for thirty
yeari, by invitation sat on the right of the piesldiug
Chancellor, while the scat oe hts left was occupied by
James W. Gray, Esq , who has hold his commission
as'ilSFter in Equity since 1820. a period of more than
thirty-nine yea.'s, during which time he has di?
charged the onerous and responsible duties of his
h:gh office with an energy, intelligence and integrity
which.havn justly received thc comm.ndaliou not
only of the cench and bar, but of all who have had
business relations with him.
To the right of tho ex-Chief Ju-tice sat James 1.
Gantt, Esq., Register in Equity, who tucceedel hi3
father in 18(11, and has since discharged his duties
most acceptably ani efficiently, as did bis predeces?
sor, who filled the office tor thirty-six ye rs, with
honor to himself and without ever having been op
. posod by a rival candidate, so creditably were his
official labors and courtesies performed.
Hon. James Simons, on behalf of tho Dar, address?
ed the Chancellor as follows:
May it please your Honor-It cannot be a matter
of surprise to you that there should be so larga au
assemblage of the bar. ' hoy aro present on a most
solemn ccca.-iou. Wero even a stringer to e"?er
into this temple, at the present moment, he would
naturally iwf<-r that tome very grave event bad
caused these loamed men who smrounl meto leave
their' avocations and onga.-emc ts to appear b. fore
you- Judeen, it is a solemn aad crave occasion.
We have as-^mbled now to bid farewell to this
great in-titu iou - the High <~our: of Chancery-as a

Wueu you look a: the venerable personages who
now si: on yo'ir right' baud and on your left, who
ate deprived of their bunora and places as well ts

great changes we are suffering. Hut how much more
is th" whole community affected by thc catastrophe
which this day brinys upon ns 1
This ereat institution has bad i-s oriaiu. bi.-toiy
and celcbrit.v in ihe wis lorn and ext* ricaco of the
most learned and bC3t men ol' a past and of thc pr. s

arbitraments by which tho contestations between cit?

measures for dispensing justice, it lus beau also a
great moral engine. Other coart* merely dc;i e dis?

ties, repiessiurr and restrainina the cominis.-ioa of
injuries, and enforcing tho performance of moral and
legal duties and obligations.
These g?cat ends caueot bo effectually aceoni

technical modes of their procedura, cannot ada ?it
themselves to tho peculiarities and diatincUvas of
caoh case Out s-hall be brought tet?te th-.-m-and

ind who have bein cugated in this great work?
On thc bench, he m.ist learned, elevated and erudite
judges, and at tho bar the most accomphshe t arni
experienced solicitors, who have devote I theil labors
and spent their lives iu the servi c of the cauyt. I
6e-? at my ?-ide some of my brethren distinguished
for their leami: g ecu virtue?, who have been scrvi

years. I, myselt, although somewhat thvir jun'or,
according to "my limited loaming and exp" leuce,
have labored to the best of niyabiiity oa thia >p It?
ter four and thirty ye.vs It is but reasonable, then,
that wo ghoul'1, feel ourselves itlcuiide? with this no?
ble institution. For myself. I c mfess it bas b ien a
school of instruction and has, in a very g cat degrea,
shaped mv character, my habit of thought, and my
inoJes o? dca?ng with myfellow.men.
But, may it please your Honor, we painfullv part
with the court aud its i ttoem^d and loyerotl offl -trs
thia day, and thc farther adroi'iistratiou of justice in
those cases whicbtformerly wero conaid.jrcd in this
forum must bc tuided and gov rued by I hose fri-sh
and novel \iews which have lately been promulgated
in the State, and have brought down this sacred
temple in crum ling ruins over our heans.
I hold in my hand a paper which I will ask your
Honet's perm?3-ioa to read, as expressive of tho sen?

will submit to your Honor far nuch disposition as you
m -y be pleas d to make o) it.
