A long time ago, before the invention of bair dye, when a mau bad to wear his beard the color that naturo nudo it, whether he would or not, thoro wa3 a man who had made him? self enormously rich as a whiskey inspcetor, or something of that sorl. I dou't know pre? cisely where bc lived, but think he lived most? ly in the imagination. He run a great castle, on the European plan, had horses and mulhern, and,in fact runabout everything in his neighborhood, including running for office and with tho girls; for at tho time of which I write ho was a gay widower. Ho had great quantities of greenbacks, eorner lots, oil stock, bonds and things, but he was hideously ugly, and had withal an enormous blue beard, frightful to contemplate, which gavo to him the cognomen of Blue Beard, by which ho was known to tho country round about, as well as te the couutry that had laid off its round-about, and consequently was in its shirt sleeves. Blue Beard grew weary of living in solitary magnificence m his lofty castle, and finding that he was getting bluor and bluer every day, he determined to marry. Having boon mar? ried half a dozen times-taken half a dozen raw ones, as one might say-ho waa natural? ly quite miserable when deprived of tho gen? tle influences of the sex for any length of time. One of bis neighbors was a widow lady, who had two very beautiful and highly accomplish? ed daughters. They could play the piano harp, and seven-up, and work embroidery and plan? chette elegantly. To this widow lady Blue Beard applied for tho hand and general anatomy of one of her daughters, leaving her to decido which one she would give bim. Although tho "stamps," he had pleaded loudly in his favor,%s they do yet, although this was a great many years ago, yet that dreadful beard was against him, aud neither of the young womon desired to have it against her. Blue wasn't fashionable for beards; if it had been it might have been dif? ferent. One of them wept bitterly because it would be several hundred years yet before hair dye would be discovored, so that hs could have his whiskers colored. Another circumstance rendered them shy of him. He was having a wedding every once in a while at the castle, but no funerals ! , Wed? ding cake had been ordered from the confec-1 honers several times, but no undertaker had ! bad ? job there yat. No matter now many times a man is left a widower, if ho corres? pondingly patronize? some respeatable owner of a hearse; but repeated wedlock with? out funerals is certainly a suspicious cu e ana? s', an ce. Blue Beard cunningly invited the family and their friends to the castle, where they passed the week ao delightfully that the youngest daughter began to think blue was a pretty good color for whiskers after all, particularly when their possessor could keep up such an establishment as that, wbere they had three meals a day, besides a lunch every morning from ten o'clock until eleven. She looked with contempt on a red-whiskered (eau of her's she used to think '-perfectly splendid," and actually asked him why he didn't "rub indigo - into 'em"" Tho upshot of the business was, she consented to become Mrs. B. Beard, and the wedding was celebrated with great .eclat. At the expiiation of the honeymoon, Bluo Beard pretended to his wife that business of importance calied bim away to a distant city. He would b? absent for soveral weeks, and in the meantime che could invite company and enjoy herself as much as possible. Ho gave her a bunch of keys, enabling ber at any timo to open his safe, aud feast her eyes upon the diamonds (ho loaned money on "collateral," sometimes, ) greenbacks, seven-thirties, rovo nuo stamps and receipted gas bills deposited there-also giving access tu the wine cellar, store room, picture gallery, billiard room, ten pin alley, corn house, &c, &z. But one little ney opened a room in the basement that she must not approach save upon her peril. Bhe promised, and ho took a street car for the de? pot. From the time that Mother Eve disregarded the injunction against a certain tree in Eden's orchard and partook of a lihode Island pippin, thereby introducing various thing j into the world never beforo dreamed of, curiosity has been an absorbing passion with the fair sex, and we no- d hardi y inform the intelligent rea? der that ber husband was scarcely out of sight before Mrs. B. B. had unlocked the door of the forbidden room. The Widow B. inherited his money, together with the remains of his other wives, with which she was enable 1 to set up a Musoam of Anatomy, filially marrying a aide showman Her sister Anna was uuited to a gentleman by tho name of Hominy, becoming Aana Dotuiny, though what year thia was 1 cannot say. Blue Beards went out with tho eminent and exces? sive widower of that name, und havn't been in since to my knowledge.
