A STARLESS REGION.-There has not been a
Municipal star seen in the western part ol the city,
. bounded by the river, Beaufain, Pitt and Calhoun
streets, for one month.
STEALING FROM THE JAMES ADO :B.-Thomas
Kirk, colored, was nabbed yesterday for stealing
fruit from the steamship James Adger, at Adger's
wharf.
PATING UP TAXES OH SALES.-There was a
rush yesterday to meet taxes due oa sales for the
quarter ending on the 15th instant. It was, no
donbt, due to the reminder in yesterday's NEWS,that
it was the hut chance.
GAEBOTEBS AND ROBBERS.- The rascals who
garroted and robbed cuirons at several points in the
city, as ripc.'ted, in THE NEWS yesterday, are known
to the detectives, and will soon be overhauled.
NEW PILOT BOAT FOB GEOBGETOWN.-The
yacht Norma, formerly of tho Now York Yacht Club,
his been sold to the pilots of Gesrgetowo for $1250,
and will bc uscdhoreafter as a pilot boat on George?
town Bar.

IMPBOVEMENTS.-The new ics house in Mset
: ing-street is fast nearing completion, and when done
-will be for moro capacious than the old one.
The German Lutheran Church, in King-street,
.has reached the top of the first story, and is a solid
structure,
PABDON.-Mr. W. A. Jennings, aonvicted by
a military commission in -Charleston, in October,
1867, of wearing concealed weapons and cotton
stealing, and sentenced to imprisonment at Fort
Macon, North Carolina, for four years, has been par
. doned by Governor Scott.
COLORED ORPHAN ASYLUM.-This institution,
? situated at the Elliott mansion, Gcorge-stroet, will
cease to receive the assistance of tho Freedmen's
Bureau after the 31st instant. In all probability a
.biU wiU be introduced ia the Legislature to provide
for its support and change of Iscaiioa.
ARRESTED ON SUSPICION OF DEBT.-Yester?
day a colored mm who had been recently released
from the custody el the law, met a friend and in
answer to an inquiry why he had been imprisoned,
replied, "I was rested on suspisun of det, but day
cudn't provo it, and I was let out.'^
HISTORIO POINTS IN THE HARBOR*-There are
a number of strangers visiting the city from Europe
- and the Northern cities, who generally express an
anxiety to visit tho historic points in ibo harbor,
which they are unable to do for want of the proper
facilities. Why dont some enterprising yachtman
make frips around the harbor for a reasonable fee.
RBXIEVTKG THE STEAMEB ROCKLAND.-The
steamer Rockland, und?r the energetic and enter
.prising management^ of Mr. H. L. P. McCormick,
thc agent of the Ferry Line, will bc raised in a day
or two. A schooner ha? been lashed alongside of
her so as to move ker off the snag which holds her
fast.
COTTON IN SELMA.-The Sahna Timos of
Friday says: ? There is a largs>upply of cotton lying
here, amouuting to about 1900 bales, which it is ex?
pected will bo shipped very soon. Cotton comes in
incessantly from aU points. Thore wera shipptd
within the past three week?, from this place alone,
753 bales, and even this much r.-euld be a very low
average for the samo period since the corrmence

SULLIVAN'S ISLAND AND MOUNT PLEASANT.
Forty new lots have been surveyed and laid out on
this delightful summer retreat, and there ls no
doubt that many new houses will go up before the
spring season arrives.
Cn Mount Pleasant, too, building is looking up,
and many persons contemplate residing there, in
consequence of its close proximity io the city aa?

Ferry company.

City Club, and it is very probable that the game will

THE FAIR OF THE WIDOWS' HOME.-The
inclemency of the weather prevented an auspicious
opening of the Fair last night. Every thing has
been put in readiness to receive the public this
evening, and should the weather prove propitious,
we predict a full and fashionable astendonce. To?
morrow's NEWS will detail the many chaimiDg fea?
tures of the entertainment. This much can be pre?
mised, however, from the hasty glance taken at the
general arrangements, the decorations, and the dis?
position of the beautiful articles on the ample tables,
that everything is in keeping with taste, refinement
and elegance.

found in a small slore up town, and restored to its
place on the mantelpiece whence it had been taken

Catharine Kelly alias Higgins, an-1 Catharine
Heeiy, who seduced thc unsophisticated young man
jute a dark corner and stole his watch, were turned
over to a magistrate.
Peter G-dis, for stealing apples from Hogan's
store, was sett to the House of Correction for two
days on broad ano water.
A private in thc 6th Infantry, for boeing drunk and
disorderly, was fined $5.
Loila Summers, for stealing tools from the shop
of Robert Scott in Church-street, was sent to the
House of Correction for sixty days.
James Riley, for being drunk, was fined S3.
REPORTER'S CRUMBS.-There aro a number of
delinquents who still ewe their real estate taxes,
which, if not settled soen, will be transferred to the
teuder mercies of thc Sheriff.
There was a sale of city stock yosterday at sixty
one, and subsequently a buyer could not get it at
sixty-two.
lt is stated on good authority that on thc first of
April the interest then due on city stocks will be
promptly paid in currency.
The city scavengers are required to attend strictly
to their duty. One or two ot them lately have been
found inattentive and have been fined. It ls neces?
sary to the health of tbe city that offal should be re?
moved early.
We hear that in the Limming department of car?
pentry there his' b.-eu more business done lately
than there has been since 186S.
A novelty in the hat line, combining the water?
proof aud dress features in one cover, was brought
to this city yesterday from Parla.
If housekeepers want to avoid trouVle they o1?ould
invariably exact a receipt from discharged servants,
or pay them their due? in the presence of witnesses,
A gentleman bad a petty suit brought against him
yesterday for wages he had paid twelve months
ago, and such suits are not uncommon.
