THROUGH ROUTE TO FLORIDA_The steamer
Pdot Boy has jest been overhauled, and had new
boilers and machinery put in. She ia a fast boat,
and wiB now make the trip more speedily from
Charleston to Florida. She stops on tho way at
Beaufort and' Savannah, and connecta with the At?
lantic and Gulf Railroad, securing speedy connection
with the Interior of Florida, 'ihrough tickets to al1
parts of Florida may be obtained from Captain John
ferguson, on Accommodation wharf.
KEW ORLEANS ABD CHARLESTON.-Tho tariff
between Now Orleans and Charleston via the Flori-,
da Railroad, the Alliance line of steamships, and the
steamers City Point and Dictator, has been largely

Peter and Mike Johnson, colored, sued ont a Habeas
Corpus yesterday, which was heard before Magis?
trates Schroder, Rivers and Banapan x. They were
ordered to give bail each in the sum of one hundred
.dollars, an-l in default were remanded to jail. A. T.
Smythe, Esq., pro pet, and James Lowndes, Esq.,
acting for the Attorney-General. Tho prisoners are
the parties charged with greasing tho Sonth Caro
1 ina Railroad track and robbing tho train some time

ESCAPE OP CONVICTS FROM THE PENITENTIARY.
The following convicts have effected their escape
fron the penitentiary in Columbia:
George Gain, sentenced by the District Court of
Marion to six years' confinement for mule stealing.
Legett Quick, to imprisonment for life for murder
in Marlboro* District.
James Goddard, four years, for larceny in Marion
District
T. Jefferson Tie?, sanier oed at the Spring Term of
the Court ot General Sessions, Charleston District,
to two years' imprisonment at hard labor for steal?
ing a horse from Mr. P." Lee, of this city. Lee will
be recollected as the man who palmed himself off on
several clergymen of the city as a Baptist preacher.
THE PROGRESS OF RAILROAD TRANSPORTA?
TION.-The steady increase in railroads throughout
the ion til is nuking great changes in the routes by
which products reacL the leading pointa of diBtribu
- tion. As an instance, wo noticed yesterday that
twelve hogsheads of tho new crop of Louisiana sugar
. arrived here by tho South Carol'ja Railroad from
New Orleans. Even before the -.var thia feat was pos?
sible, although, so f J: as we know, never pt rformed,
tho connection through Georgia to Montgomery, and
down the Alabama River to Mobile and Now Orleans
being then al work; bnt tho railroad having now
reached Selma, from which point river s Learners go
by water to New Orleans, or by rail to Vicksburg,
and down tho Mi-.s'seippi from that peint to New
Orleans, the trade arena has hugely exp aided. The
receiple now o. ming by rail from that direction are
only the commencement of what in r. few years
tonst be a great commercial stream, that will bring
wealth and greatness to oar city.
A GRAM WIDOW rs TROUBLE.-A young
woman, accompanied by a xaan named Howard,
roached this city a fow d-iys ago. lrom Charlotte,
North Carolina, and stoped at a well known privato
-boarding l ouse, in a fashionable locality. They
represented themselves as nus and wife, and so
registered, as Mr. and Mrs.-. After a day had
elapsed, tho sc-caHod husband disappeared. The
pretended wife be carno very macs abu med, and
-said that aha presumed he bad been foully dealt
with, aa he bad a large sum of money in his posses,
sion. The sequel proved, however, that he had
dealt fonBy with her, having cheated ber of bar
money as wen as her virtue. She was tho wife of
another, whom he had decoyed from hame on tho
pretence of marrying ber, after she could b ?divorced.
On tho brain hither, be managed to swindle her
out of two hundred and forty-eight dollar <, all she
had, and then deserted hex as above described. She
applied to the Detective ornoo for redresi, and des?
cribed Howard so accurately as to lead to ble arrest

SENSIBLE CONCLUSION.-A house of some
character and extent in trade, that had been rather
chary of their advertising, rem irked the other day.

by those who have neglected so doing.
Steamer Rockland sti.l ber snagged on the lett of j
the Mount Pleasant Ferry Wharf. Mr. H. L. P.
McCormick reached the city last evening from Sa?
vannah and will soon right her.
Quite a number of foreigners are vis ting the city
now, principally Englishmen and Irishmen. MaDy
persons from the upper part of thc State are also in
the city.

THE HOLIDAY SEASON.-That it is good to

approaching, and which manifests itself in that
characteristic feature of the Christmas festival, the
