THE SHOW FOB IHE HOLIDAYS.-"Stone &
Murray's Great Circus" will exhibit in Charleston,
commencing on Christmas day. The Montgomery
Advertiser says: "The biggest erowd that ever at?
tended a circus in this city was the ono at Stone A
Murray's last night The immense pavilion was
crowded to ita utmost capacity, and it was difficult
for many to find seats. 1 hose who were present
speak in the highest terms of praise of the perform
ance. The gymnastic performers are truly wonder?
ful; the riding is excellent, and the whole affair is
conducted with thc strictest propriety and decency."

eery establishment of John A. Cook J: Co.,King
slrect, yesterday, avd whilo he imagined the pro?
prietor's attention was called away, he appropriated
sundry articles and tried to make off. He was pur?
sued by a policeman, and the cha-e ? as kept up
uutil the negro reached Warren-street, and tried to
Lide himself undor a house, where he was taken.
Tho plunder was recovered.
A NEW HIJO.-The Northern shipyards are
apparently inproving somewhat in activity, and
throwing oft* the prostration which has prevailed
there for some time. Many of their late structures
ore elecant specimens of workmanship aud model,
and show that the American mechanic only desires a
reheffrom the heavy cost of much of the material
employed in his art to rc mme his former position as
a builder of the neatest and finest water croit in tho
world.
A fine specimen of the present state of the ship?
wright's skill arrived here a few days ?-ince in the
new brig Kobert L ilion.?She was constructed noar
New York, and her liner and general finish aro neat
and substantial, and in all her arrangements comfort
and strength soem to bc secured, .-he is, we learn,
named in compliment to Mr. Robert Dillon, who ls
well known for. his secure cotton tie, and who has
placad some of his surplus means in this enterprise.
She has been placed in charge of a most efficient and
long-tried officer, Captain Blatchford, whoso reputa?
tion is a guarantee of good management. Ber agent
is William Roach, Esq.. whose experience and skill
will secure her a good and quick freight. The Dillon
has a capacity of about six hundred thousand pounds
of cotton.
THEATRE.-? flatter-ins house greeted the
first representation of Mr. E. B. Seabrook's ratirical
comedietta, "Medicine," by the Templeton troupe,
last evelin;. The Charleston public is not usually
very appreciative of native talent, and honer their
prophets for the most part in the inverse ratio sug?
gested by tke truest of proverbs; but en IhiB occa?
sion, at leas1, they did not show themselves chary of
their commendation. It was a disappointment to
many that Alice Vane did nat appear in tho piece,
though the acting of Miss Fo; ter and Miss Kate
Raymond left nothing to bo desired. The latter as
Fanny, the pert and vivacious soubrette, and thc
real heroine of the play, was thoroughly -uccessful.
Major Bangs and his two rollicking nephews were
also well presented, and full justice was done to the
effective points of what is really a very clever and
sprightly comedietta. The verdict which on impar?
tial criticism would pronounce upon the stage-mer?
its of the play, would undoubtedly bo that thero is
in the first half of lt, at least, to? much talk and too
Uttle "situatien;" but it is also only justice te say
that the talk is good enough, and the action suffi?
ciently effective, very nearly to excuse what was t
most natural defect in an amateur effort. We hope
the play will be again presented on the return of tho
troupe to the city.
The closing extravaganza of Pocahontas was an
agreeable roundirgoff of the evening's entertain?
ment. Here, ss in all her impersonations, Alice
Vane was inimitable, and to say that she was through?

lar vivacity ana sxpreisien. Tho play-goers of
