Peedee and the Warcamaw is a peculiarly inviting

cheapness of the land; and we shall not be surpris?

NEWSPAPER REFORMS.-We aro glad to see
our Southern newspapers, one by one, casting aside
old fogy ideas and following the lead of THE
CHARLESTON NKWS in adopting tba features of live
and progressive journali.-m. Within the last few
days the Wilmington (N. C.) Star and the Savannah
Morning News have adopted 'he plan of weekly *>nb>
scription and delivery- th: latter, however, charg?
ing twenty-five cents per week. We notice also that
the Columbia Phoaix, in BB last Issn?, announces
that it will ic flexibly adhere, in future, to the system
of cash in advance.
MAZEPPA AND THE CIRCUS.-Tho show of all
shows will only continua for three nights longer.
New sensations under tho. pavilion are announced
for to-night, and the lull ' strength of Templeton's
troupe will lend asei*t*ac>?. to the t nallan Circus
company. The managers are confident that the ex?
hibition to-night W?1 surpass in every particular the
great shows already exhibited, sud that the pavilion
on tho Citadel Green win be the scene of the most
startling performance that has yet attracted the
amus?ment-going public of the City of Chatlestou.
SOCIETY HILL BBADQE.-The bridge across
the Great Peedee River at Sc cit ty HUI was complet?
ed on Friday, 20th ult, and opened to thc travelling
publie, it is a substantial, s.ructure of 426 feet in
length, with a draw of 160 feet It was built by Mr.
J. B. Lasalle, of Columbia, who has given much
satisfaction to the citizens of Society HUi in the ex?
ecution of his contract. It will be remembered that
the br'dgc wai carried away by a freshet on the ISth
of April las', owing to the insecurity o( thc piling.
The def ct has boen remedied in tho new bridge by
cribbing them, and filling tho crib with rock.

PAUL'S.-Tho preparations for tho third of tie series
of grand oratorios, which are being given for the
benefit of St Paul's Church, are now nearly com?
pleted, and the oratorio will take place on Wednes?

Ono rehearsal has taken place already, and there
is now a good prospect for not only a superior selec?
tion of sacred music, but also for an excellent exht
bition of the same. The programme, which wiU
shortly appear, contains, besides tho two Choruses
of Cartoni, soveral others from thc "Messiah," by
Handol, and one from the "Seasons," by Haydn, a'so
compositions from Mendelssohn, Cherubini, Ac. The
choruses brought from Borne have been rearranged
by Protestor Eckel, so as to be sung by mixed
voices, being orixinaUy composed only for male
voices. Tho Frofessor has also composed, expressly
forthetr execution at St Paul's, the full orchestra
scores, so as to recdot their performance of the
highest artistic ment. Int scores for the organ will
all bc executed by Mr. Eckel on one of the finest in?
struments io this country, and the orchestral parts
are to bc performed by our best musicians. Tho
large church, Fo well adapted to sound, ls a grea1 aid
to ?-nch a performance, and no efforts have been
?pared to make this oratorio a great musical event

A NOVEL SCENE.-Last evening, at dark, a
well-known shipping clerk on Atlantic wharf was
seen rolling a barrel of potatoes ihroush Meeting
stroet, on bi-wa home. It wa9 so novel a thinp,

that a gentlem?u bad, in order to test the cltrk's in?
dependence ol' character, offered him a barrel of po?

Sunday lest, on board his vessel from Bremen, in

Captain Wieling leaves a wire and eight children at
